[Identification of the primary lesion in a patient with concomitant breast and kidney cancer following fracture of the femur].

A 61-year-old woman was diagnosed with breast cancer [T3N3cM0: Stage IIIC, estrogen receptor [ER] (+), progesterone receptor [PgR] (+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2[HER2] (-)]at the time of initial presentation. Following diagnosis, combined modality therapy including hormone therapy and chemotherapy were initiated, but hemorrhage from the primary lesion and bone metastases were observed. Priority was given to treatment of the breast cancer, and chemotherapy was administered, after which, right mastectomy and axillary lymph node sampling were performed to assess local disease contr

Neuroendocrine tumour metastasis to the orbit.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms are tumours that usually arise in the gastrointestinal tract and the bronchopulmonary system. The orbit is a rare anatomical site for their metastases. In the following article we present a case report of a 73-year-old man who was admitted to the Ophthalmology Department because of eye pain and high intraocular pressure in the right eye. There was also eye motility restriction, diplopia, oedema of the eyelid, and subconjunctival haemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumour in the right orbit, probably arising from the inferior rectus muscle. The patient wa

Uterine cervical carcinoma: role of matrix metalloproteinases (review).

Epidemiological and experimental studies have provided evidence that human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a main player in the development of uterine cervical neoplasms. Migration of cancer cells from the origin tissue to surrounding or distant organs is essential for tumor progression. Many studies of tumor invasion and metastases have focused on the degradation of the extracellular matrix where matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play a central role. Two of these enzymes, MMP-2 and MMP-9, have been correlated with the processes of tumor cell invasion and metastasis in human cancers, includin

Cutaneous vasculitis as a paraneoplastic syndrome in childhood.

INTRODUCTION: In children, vasculitis as a paraneoplastic syndrome has never been reported before. In this work we report a vasculitis syndrome as a neoplasm onset manifestation in a child and we discuss our case regarding the data from literature. CASE REPORT: A 7-year-old girl presented with hand and foot ulceration, fixed cyanosis and pallor. During investigation, a central nervous system (CNS) rhabdomyosarcoma with metastasis on multiple sites was diagnosed. DISCUSSION: Rhabdomyosarcomas represent 5 to 8% of child neoplasms, although the CNS seldom is the primary site. In the indexed Eng

Metastatic renal cell carcinoma to the thyroid gland with tracheal invasion: A case report.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common neoplasm of the kidney. It often manifests with nonspecific symptoms, and most cases are incidentally identified during abdominal imaging for unrelated etiologies. Radiologically, it typically presents as a hypervascular, solid, or cystic mass with heterogeneous features. The current standards of treatment vary depending on whether the malignancy is localized or not, but options include radical or partial nephrectomy, radiotherapy, immuno-oncological agents, and tyrosine kinase inhibitors. The likelihood of metastasis in RCC is positively correlate

Severe vaginal bleeding due to vaginal metastasis from renal cell carcinoma with inferior vena cava tumor thrombus: A case report.

RATIONALE: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer and is the second most common urologic neoplasm. Vaginal metastasis from RCC is extremely rare clinically. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 56-year-old woman presented with intermittent vaginal bleeding that had persisted for 1 month. Enhanced computed tomography examination suggested a vaginal mass (3 × 2 × 2 cm), right kidney tumor (15 × 12 × 10 cm), and an inferior vena cava tumor thrombus. During gynecologic examination, the mass was necrotic and caused uncontrollable vaginal bleeding. DIAGNOSES: Based on clinical and imag

Oligometastatic Parathyroid Carcinoma Presenting as Neck Pain: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is an exceedingly rare, slow-growing but progressive endocrine malignancy that represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Vertebral metastasis of PC is remarkable, with only 3 prior cases of spinal metastasis reported in the literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 62-year-old woman presented with 1 week of neck pain radiating down her right arm. Cervical x-ray revealed a lytic lesion of the C4 vertebral body. Lab work revealed hypercalcemia with an elevated parathyroid hormone level. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed frank destr

Genetics of metastasis: melanoma and other cancers.

Melanoma is a malignant neoplasm of melanocytes that accounts for the majority of skin cancer deaths despite comprising less than 5% of all cutaneous malignancies. Its incidence has increased faster than that of any other cancer over the past half-century and the annual costs of treatment in the United States alone have risen rapidly. Although the majority of primary melanomas are cured with local excision, metastatic melanoma historically carries a grim prognosis, with a median survival of 9 months and a long-term survival rate of 10%. Given the urgent need to develop treatment strategies for

Parotid gland metastasis - an unusual presentation of adenocarcinoma of lung.

Lung cancer is the most frequent malignant disease and the most common cause of cancer death in the world. Primary carcinoma of the lung was an uncommon cancer until the 1930s. Common cell types in bronchial carcinoma are squamous 35%, Adenocarcinoma 30%, Small-cell 20%, Large-cell 15%. We present a case of a bronchial neoplasm metastasis to the parotid gland. A 50 years old male patient presented with a 7×5cm painless parotid mass that was metastatic adenocarcinoma on histopathology. Then we thoroughly examined the patient and he was investigated accordingly. There was an abnormal shadow in t…

Occult gallbladder carcinoma presenting as a primary ovarian tumor in two women: two case reports and a review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: The ovary is a common site of metastasis from various organs. However, little is known about gallbladder carcinoma metastasizing to the ovaries and presenting as a primary ovarian tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two cases of a metastatic gallbladder carcinoma which mimicked a primary ovarian tumor in a 35-year-old and a 62-year-old North Indian woman. Clinically, both our patients presented with abdominal masses without obvious signs and symptoms related to gallbladder carcinoma. Radiology suggested the possibility of a primary ovarian tumor with chronic cholecystitis and ch

Unusual presentation of a metastatic uveal melanoma in a cat.

A 10 year-old, spayed female Domestic Short-Haired (DSH) cat was diagnosed with a large primary uveal melanoma and exenteration was recommended. Thoracic radiographs, abdominal ultrasonography, and complete blood count and serum biochemistry panel did not reveal any abnormality compatible with metastatic disease and surgery was performed. Histopathologic study of the eye confirmed a diffuse iris melanoma. Five months later, the cat presented with a lameness of the right anterior extremity. On physical exam the right elbow was swollen and painful. Radiographs showed a severe osteolysis of the r

Adrenal cortical carcinoma with a liver metastasis in a child. Report of a case with fine needle aspiration findings and image analysis of nuclear DNA.

BACKGROUND: Adrenal cortical carcinoma is a rare and highly malignant neoplasm. Liver metastases from it may require special differential techniques in addition to cytologic findings. CASE: A 14-month-old child had adrenal cortical carcinoma and a liver metastasis confirmed by fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB). Histologic and clinical criteria of malignancy only partially applied to this tumor. Immunohistochemical analysis of both the primary tumor and metastasis supported an adrenal cortical origin. Other ancillary tests-DNA ploidy, proliferation index (proliferating cell nuclear antigen,

Insights into the Clinical Prognosis of High-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms.

High-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (HAMN) is used to describe a rare epithelial neoplasm of the appendix characterized by pushing-type invasion and high-grade cytologic atypia. Its implications regarding lymph node spread and the necessity of right colectomy are currently debate. The objective of the present study was to assess the clinicopathologic characteristics, the risk of lymph node and peritoneal metastasis, and long-term outcomes of patients diagnosed as HAMN in comparison to low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) and appendiceal adenocarcinoma, treated by right hemicolec

Metastatic mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma of the kidney: Case report and literature review.

Mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma is a rare renal neoplasm first classified by the WHO in 2004. It typically consists of low-grade cuboidal cells in tightly packed tubules, merging with spindle cells in a myxoid stroma with basophilic mucin. High-grade features, including sarcomatoid transformation, necrosis, and vascular invasion, are associated with poor prognosis and metastasis. Here, we present the second reported case of mucinous tubular and spindle cell carcinoma metastasizing to bone despite lacking high-grade features.

Role of Imaging in a Case of Toxoplasmosis Presenting as Generalized Lymphadenopathy.

Toxoplasmosis is caused by Toxoplasma gondii an obligate protozoan intracellular parasite. The disease has variable prevalence globally and is usually asymptomatic. Pregnant and immunocompromised people are at risk of getting infected. Enlarged lymph nodes are the most frequently observed clinical form of Toxoplasma in humans, mostly affecting posterior cervical nodes. Other organs usually affected are the brain and eyes. We present a case of toxoplasmosis with generalized lymphadenopathy mimicking metastasis in a lady with a previous history of operated pancreatic neoplasm.

Giant Centrifugal and Necrotizing Cutaneous Metastases of Melanoma: A Brief Review of the Literature and a Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Melanoma is a neoplasm derived from melanocytes of the skin and other sites. In the natural history of melanoma, cutaneous metastases occur relatively frequently and can arise in early or late stages of the disease. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: Melanoma skin metastases have a variable appearance. Several clinical appearances are described in the literature. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: We describe an unusual clinical pattern of cutaneous melanoma metastasis, defined as giant, centrifugal, and necrotizing, and we provide a brief review of the literature.

Non-contiguous meningeal metastases of olfactory neuroblastoma.

Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a malignant neoplasm centered along the roof of the nasal cavity near the cribriform plate. Although metastasis of this tumor has been reported, non-contiguous spread to the dura is rare. Here, we report the largest series of intracranial meningeal metastases of ONBs from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Toronto. The unique natural history and geographical distribution of these metastatic lesions suggest a common mechanism of tumor spread along the dural vascular arborization.

Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma of the submandibular gland: a case report.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA), originally called mixed tumour, is the most common neoplasm of the salivary glands. It is usually a benign, slow-growing and well-circumscribed tumour. However, PA may occasionally give rise to metastases that usually occur after a previous recurrence. These tumours display benign histological features in both primary tumours and metastases. Such tumours have been termed metastatic PA or metastatic mixed tumours. We report a case of metastatic PA of the submandibular gland with metastasis to the cervical lymph nodes.
