Wilms tumor 1 expression in vascular neoplasms and vascular malformations.

BACKGROUND: Wilms tumor 1 (WT1) protein is expressed during angiogenesis and malignant transformation of endothelial cells and can be helpful to distinguish between proliferative and malformative vascular lesions. METHODS: We evaluated retrospectively 117 vascular neoplasms and 50 vascular malformations. Vascular neoplasms included infantile hemangioma (n = 87), noninvoluting congenital hemangioma (n = 5), rapidly involuting congenital hemangioma (n = 3), tufted angioma (n = 8), pyogenic granuloma (n = 13), and spindle cell hemangioma (n = 1). Vascular malformations were lymphatic malformatio

Ampullary Adenocarcinoma with Incidental Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor: Report of an Extremely Rare Case and Review of Literature.

Periampullary neoplasms are a heterogeneous group of tumors arising within 2 cm of the ampulla of Vater. Neuroendocrine tumors can originate throughout the entire body, from neuroendocrine cells. These neoplasms exhibit deep differences, according to their origin and biological behavior. We describe a case of a 79-year-old man who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater after proper staging. At gross histology, an incidental pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor was also documented. Despite two synchronous neoplasms, the patient survived 34 months with no evidenc

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is associated with a higher risk of advanced colorectal neoplasm.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is known to increase the risk of adenomatous colonic polyps. However, the role of screening colonoscopy in patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD in detecting advanced colorectal neoplasm is not clearly evidence-based. Therefore, we investigated whether the histological severity of NAFLD is associated with advanced colorectal neoplasm. METHODS: This study included patients ≥18 years old who underwent screening colonoscopy between 2013 and 2018 within a biopsy-evaluated prospective NAFLD cohort. Advanced colorectal neoplasm was defined as

Clinical features and imaging findings of early lacrimal sac neoplasms: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Early lacrimal sac neoplasms are often misdiagnosed as lacrimal duct obstruction, delaying appropriate treatment, accelerating tumor progression, and worsening prognosis. By systematically reviewing and summarizing these characteristics, we aimed to assist ophthalmologists and otolaryngologists in accurately diagnosing and managing early-stage lacrimal sac neoplasms. METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients presenting with epiphora were diagnosed with either lacrimal sac neoplasms or mucoceles. Diagnostic assessments included computed tomography (CT), enhanced magnetic reson

The World Health Organization (WHO) classification of tumors of the hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues: an overview with emphasis on the myeloid neoplasms.

The World Health Organization (WHO) classification of myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms utilizes morphology, immunophenotype, genetics and clinical features to define disease entities of clinical significance. It is a consensus classification in which a number of experts have agreed on the classification and diagnostic criteria. In general, the classification stratifies neoplasms according to their lineage (myeloid, lymphoid, histiocytic/dendritic) and distinguishes neoplasms of precursor cells from those comprised of functionally mature cells. Lymphoid neoplasms are derived from cells that frequ

Pathologic Staging of Endometrial Carcinomas: Selected Areas of Difficulty.

Accurate staging of cancers is an important determinant of prognosis and guides optimal patient treatment. Although the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting recommends that endometrial cancers (including carcinosarcomas) are pathologically staged using the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) 2009 system, in many areas TNM [American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) or Union for International Cancer Control (UICC)] staging is used or even mandated; these latter systems are based on FIGO 2009. In this review, areas of difficulty in the pathologic staging of end

[Histiocytic sarcoma].

Histiocytic sarcoma is a neoplasm arising from the histiocytes. Histiocytic neoplasms are among the rarest malignancies of lymphatic tissues. Occurs in less than 1% of all malignancies affecting lymph nodes and soft tissues [1,2]. The exact incidence of histiocytic sarcoma has not been described so far. In this article, we report three patients with HS, who were treated at the departement of Internal medicine, haematology and oncology, Faculty Hospital Brno. Despite the fact that all these patients had the same disease, the treatment effects differ depending on the stage of the disease at the

Relapsing acute pancreatitis due to ampullary adenoma in a patient with familial adenomatous polyposis.

A patient with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) presented with a relapsing attack of acute pancreatitis. Evaluation using computed tomography, ultrasonography, and duodenoscopy revealed an ampullary adenoma, which was classified as Spigelman's stage III according to Spigelman's criteria. The patient underwent a pylorus-resected pancreatoduodenectomy, and has had no abdominal pain suggesting acute pancreatitis for 1 year after surgery. Only a few reports of acute pancreatitis due to ampullary neoplasms in patients with FAP are available. Relapsing acute pancreatitis is another surgical indi

Thymoma: current medical and surgical management.

Thymoma is a rare neoplasm usually with an indolent growth pattern; however, local invasion and/or dissemination may occur. Surgery has been the standard of care for early stage disease with good to excellent cure rates anticipated. This neoplasm has been found to be relatively sensitive to cisplatinum-based chemotherapy as compared with most other epithelial tumors. Aggressive multimodality therapy therefore can result in long-term disease-free survival for patients presenting with locally advanced or even disseminated disease. This chapter outlines the current medical and surgical treatment

Canine epidermotropic cutaneous lymphoma.

The histologic features of an epidermotropic cutaneous lymphoma in a dog are presented. The neoplasm, which was intensely epidermotropic, thoroughly invaded the follicular and apocrine gland epithelium. The intense epidermotropism was retained in the tumor stage. By comparison to human mycosis fungoides, the cell nucleus was less convoluted and the infiltrate was less polymorphic. The lymphoid cell appeared to undergo neoplastic transformation into a cell with a large pale nucleus, often with a prominent nucleolus and variable cytoplasm. In situ marker studies are needed to clarify the cell ty

The spectrum of histopathologic findings in vesical diverticulum: implications for pathogenesis and staging.

Diverticula are saccular evaginations of urinary bladder mucosa that are encountered in all age groups with a prevalence of 1% to 10%. Intradiverticular neoplasms pose diagnostic and management challenges. The aim of this study was to document the common morphologic changes and neoplasms found in a large series of adult and pediatric vesical diverticula. A total of 174 diverticula from 133 patients were reviewed including 48 pediatric (mean age, 7.1 years) and 85 adult (mean age, 63.93 years); 92% were male. Of the 85 nonneoplastic cases, prominent morphologic findings included significant chr

Primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

Primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (PC-ALCL) is a CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorder (LPD) of the skin with a relatively good prognosis in the absence of high-stage disease. CD30+ LPDs comprise approximately 25%-30% of primary cutaneous lymphomas and as a group represent the second most common clonal T-cell neoplasm of the skin behind mycosis fungoides. Diagnosis of PC-ALCL relies strongly on clinicopathologic correlation given the potential morphologic, clinical and molecular overlap with the other cutaneous CD30+ LPD, lymphomatoid papulosis, and more aggressive hematolymphoid n

Carcinogenicity of saccharin.

Saccharin is carcinogenic for the urinary bladder in rats and mice, and most likely is carcinogenic in human beings. The neoplasms of the urinary bladder are malignant and invade and metastasize. Male rats are more susceptible to urinary bladder carcinogenesis than female rats. Rats exposed as fetuses develop neoplasms more readily than rats exposed as weanlings. The lesions in the urinary bladder go through the stages of hyperplasia, hyperplastic nodules, and later carcinomas. The male of the human species ingesting saccharin, as for rats, is more susceptible to carcinogenesis of the urinary

Improvement in quality of life of bitches with malignant mammary neoplasms after unilateral mastectomy and regional lymphadenectomy.

Malignant mammary neoplasms (MMNs) are common in bitches, and surgery promotes disease remission and improves quality of life (QoL), which reflects animal welfare. QoL can be assessed using validated scales, answered by the closest caregiver. This study aimed to evaluate the QoL of 15 bitches with MMNs before and after unilateral mastectomy associated to regional lymphadenectomy. The "HHHHHMM Quality of Life Scale" and the "Questionnaire for Evaluating Health-Related Quality of Life in Dogs with Signs of Pain Secondary to Cancer (QEHQ) were administered to the closest caregiver before surgery

Classification of lymphoid neoplasms: the microscope as a tool for disease discovery.

In the past 50 years, we have witnessed explosive growth in the understanding of normal and neoplastic lymphoid cells. B-cell, T-cell, and natural killer (NK)-cell neoplasms in many respects recapitulate normal stages of lymphoid cell differentiation and function, so that they can be to some extent classified according to the corresponding normal stage. Likewise, the molecular mechanisms involved the pathogenesis of lymphomas and lymphoid leukemias are often based on the physiology of the lymphoid cells, capitalizing on deregulated normal physiology by harnessing the promoters of genes essenti

Clinical application of endoscopic ultrasonography.

During the course of routine clinical practice in 48 patients, 50 endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) examinations were performed over a 1-yr period, with all patient data collected prospectively. Organs examined were the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, ampulla, pancreas, common bile duct, and gallbladder. There were 18 staging exams of known neoplasms, and 24 examinations to evaluate possible mass. Forty-three examinations were successful, four failed due to instrument malfunction, and three were technical failures. Among 35 exams for masses, follow-up pathology was available in 21 and confirmed EUS fi

Expression of p150 in cervical neoplasia and its potential value in predicting survival.

BACKGROUND: A recently cloned novel p150 protein was found to be overexpressed in human breast carcinoma. To the authors' knowledge, no data on p150 expression in any other human tumors have been published previously. METHODS: To investigate whether the expression of p150 correlated with the clinicopathologic stages of cervical neoplasms or the prognoses of patients with these neoplasms, the authors conducted an immunohistochemical study of archival formalin fixed, paraffin embedded specimens. Seventy-two precancerous lesions (CIN), 75 clinical Stage IB invasive squamous carcinomas, and 20 sa
