The dispersed neuroendocrine (NE) system is represented in the bronchopulmonary tract by the solitary neuroendocrine cells and the neuroepithelial bodies (NEBs). Immunohistochemically, neuron-specific enolase, serotonin, bombesin, and calcitonin are demonstrable in both components, whereas leu-enkephalin is demonstrable only in solitary NE cells. The carcinogenic effect of a single intraperitoneal injection of N-bis)2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine (BHP) was studied in male Wistar rats. Lung tumors (adenomas and adenocarcinomas) had the highest incidence (100%). Fewer neoplasms were induced in the thyroid (adenomas and adenocarcinomas, 36%), kidney (renal cell carcinomas, 8%), and the sigmoid colon (adenomas and adenocarcinomas, 9%). No pancreatic neoplasms were found.

PURPOSE: The binding of hematogenously borne malignant cells that express the carbohydrate sialyl Lewis X (sLe(X)) to selectin adhesion receptors on leukocytes, platelets, and endothelial cells facilitates metastasis. The glycosylation inhibitor, per-O-acetylated GlcNAcbeta1,3Galbeta-O-naphthalenemethanol (AcGnG-NM), inhibits the biosynthesis of sLe(X) in tumor cells. To evaluate the efficacy of AcGnG-NM as an antimetastatic agent, we examined its effect on experimental metastasis and on spontaneous hematogenous dissemination of murine Lewis lung carcinoma and B16BL6 melanoma cells.
