BACKGROUND: Solitary fibroous tumors (SFTs) are distinctive soft tissue tumors characterized by rearrangements of NAB2-STAT6 gene, which are associated with thin-walled, branching, "staghorn"-shaped vessels. SFTs are originally classified as a type of hemangiopericytoma (HPC). Classical SFTs are composed of spindle to ovoid cells arranged haphazardly or in fascicles. Rarely, SFTs exhibit unusual morphological variants such as fat formation, giant cells, dedifferentiation, or epithelioid variant. The epithelioid cell variant, which is composed almost entirely of epithelioid cells and arranged i

PURPOSE: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) are a rare entity of in majority benign neoplasms. Nevertheless, up to 20% of cases show a malignant tendency with local infiltration or metastasis. Commonly arising in the thoracic cavity, only few cases of SFT of the mesorectal tissue have been reported in the literature. Complete surgical resection, classically by posterior approach, is the treatment of choice. The purpose of this review is to demonstrate the safety and suitability of transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) as a surgical approach for the resection of benign pararectal solid tumors

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has been employed with increasing frequency in the treatment of benign intracranial tumors. While the risk for radiation-induced malignancy has been well studied for fractionated external beam radiation, reports of SRS-associated malignancy have only begun to emerge over the past 10 years.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We present a case of a rapidly enlarging, presumed sporadic vestibular schwannoma in a 51-year-old man treated with SRS. Serial imaging over the next 7.5 years demonstrated good radiographic response with consistent involution

BACKGROUND: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign tumor of the nasopharynx composed of fibrous connective tissue and an abundance of endothelium-lined vascular spaces. The name of the disease is derived from the fact that it occurs during adolescence, almost exclusively in boys.
METHODS: This study examines the natural characteristics of JNA, the imaging techniques used to diagnose and stage the neoplasm, and the treatment approaches used to manage the disease.
RESULTS: Forty-three cases of JNA diagnosed and treated at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center ove

Gamna-Gandy (G-G) bodies are classically defined as spheroidal yellow-brown foci consisting of dense fibrous tissue and collagenous fibers encrusted with iron pigments and calcium salts. These siderotic nodules were first described in the spleen early in the twentieth century and for a short time were considered to be caused by fungal infection due to the presence of unusual "bamboo-like and articulated" fibers in the lesions that vaguely mimicked mycelia forms. This notion was proven to be incorrect in the 1930s and G-G bodies are now considered to result from organization of small hemorrhage

As part of our review of non-epithelial tumors involving the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx, nine fibrous histiocytomas (FH) are reported. FH probably are derived from undifferentiated mesenchymal stem cells that have the ability to differentiate into two different pathways, one fibroblastic and the other histiocytic. The proportion of these two different elements varies greatly in different lesions. The cell population ranges from cytologically benign (small bland nuclei and no mitoses) to overtly malignant (marked anaplasia and numerous mitoses). Based on our cases and on 1

Non-lymphoid mesenchymal neoplasms of salivary gland origin are rare, accounting for 1.9-5% of major salivary gland tumors. We describe the clinico-pathologic features of 18 cases of mesenchymal neoplasms of the major salivary glands experienced at Asan Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, from 1998 to 2004. Mesenchymal neoplasms accounted for 3.4% of the total of 524 major salivary gland tumors. The parotid gland was the preponderant site (15 cases). Thirteen tumors were benign, constituting 3.5% of the total of 371 benign neoplasms. Schwannomas were the most common benign tumors (six cases), follow

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a neoplasm that can occur in the urogenital tract, and is also reported occurring in the spermatic cord, seminal vesicles, urinary bladder, prostate, and kidney. Furthermore, it is most important to consider its existence in the kidney, because it is usually diagnosed as renal cell carcinoma pre-operatively. To our knowledge, only 10 cases of SFT have been reported in the kidney to date. We report the clinico-pathological features of an intrarenal SFT occurring in a 31-year-old woman. The tumor, measuring 8.6 cm in its greatest diameter, completely replaced the

The vast majority of pleural neoplasms invade the pleura secondarily and can be seen in patients with bronchogenic carcinoma, breast cancer, lymphoma, and ovarian or gastric carcinoma. Primary pleural neoplasms are less common, although they have developed notoriety since the up-surge of malignant mesothelioma and the knowledge of its connection to asbestos exposure. Other malignant primary tumors include localized fibrous tumor and pleural liposarcoma. In most patients with diffuse malignant pleural disease the chest radiograph shows pleural effusion with or without pleural thickening. Comput

BACKGROUND: Myxofibrosarcoma is an aggressive soft tissue neoplasm, classified as a variant of malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Most often, it occurs in middle to late adult life peaking in the seventh decade and involving the lower extremities (77%), trunk (12%), and retroperitoneum or mediastinum (8%). We report the first case of thoracic myxofibrosarcoma presenting as a Pancoast tumor.

BACKGROUND: Among the three NTRK genes, NTRK2 possesses a tremendous structural complexity and involves tumorigenesis of several types of tumors. To date, only STRN and RBPMS are identified in the fusion with NTRK2 in adult soft tissue tumors. More recently, the highly selective Trk tyrosine kinases inhibitors, including larotrectinib and entrectinib, have shown significant efficacy for treating tumors harboring NTRK fusions and were approved by FDA.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of sarcoma in a 35-year-old female harboring two STRN-NTRK2 gene fusions, with a good clinical response to f

AIMS: Tumours harbouring FET::CREB fusions, particularly those involving EWSR1/FUS and CREM, represent an emerging group that is distinct from and unclassifiable into established categories such as angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma, clear cell sarcoma of soft tissue, or malignant gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumour. This study aims to further delineate the clinicopathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular features of these rare mesenchymal neoplasms with EWSR1/FUS::CREM fusions, focusing on diagnostic challenges and aggressive potential.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed seven cases o

Primary cervical stromal sarcomas are rare neoplasms that have been poorly characterized. We report the clinical, histologic, and immunohistologic features of 3 primary endocervical S100 protein (S100p)-positive and CD34-positive sarcomas, herein designated as fibroblastic malignant peripheral nerve sheath sarcoma (endocervical neurofibrosarcoma), 2 of which occurred in women younger than 35 years of age. All tumors presented as a cervical polyp or mass lesion; 1 extended into the pelvic side wall and vaginal soft tissue. The tumors measured 2.0 to 8.0 cm, and were composed of compact fascicle

Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is a widely accepted technique for the initial tissue diagnosis of a variety of lesions arising within retroperitoneal and intraabdominal viscera. Fear of complications secondary to perforation of the bowel wall has limited the use of FNA in the diagnosis of gastrointestinal and peritoneal masses. A variety of primary and secondary neoplasms involving the peritoneum may present as multiple nodules, as masses, or as diffuse involvement of the peritoneum. When these lesions are associated with mass lesions or areas of significant peritoneal thickening, they become am

Paraganglioma (PGL) is a rare neuroendocrine tumor arising from chromaffin cells outside the adrenal medulla. The most common sites are the abdomen and head and neck. Seventy percent (70%) of PGLs are sporadic, and 30% are hereditary; the latter are more often aggressive and malignant and occur in young adults. We report a case of a 36-year-old woman with a history of hypertension and abdominal pheochromocytoma resected at the age of 10 years who presented with back pain. Magnetic resonance imaging of the spine showed vertebral metastasis at L2-L5. Computed tomography of the abdomen showed a m

Atypical lipomatous tumor/well-differentiated liposarcoma (ALT/WDLPS) is a low-grade adipocytic neoplasm composed of mature adipocytes with at least focal nuclear atypia in adipocytes and stromal cells. The terms "atypical lipomatous tumor" and "well-differentiated liposarcoma" are site-dependent terms for the same morphological and genetic entity. Amplification of MDM2 and/or CDK4 is almost always present and is a defining molecular feature. It usually arises in deep soft tissue. Primary head-and-neck involvement is rare, and salivary gland tumors are exceptionally uncommon. Only a few saliva

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ossifying fibroma is a benign, encapsulated, or demarcated neoplasm consisting of varying amounts of cementum-like tissue or bone within a fibrous tissue stroma. It commonly affects patients aged 20 to 40 years, with a predominance in females; however, it can also affect children and adolescents. In this case report, we will present a rare instance of ossifying fibroma in the nasal cavity.

Central odontogenic fibroma (COF) is an uncommon intraosseous neoplasm of the gnathic bones which is composed of fibrous connective tissue, with or without calcifications, and variable amounts of inactive odontogenic epithelium. It makes up less than 5% of odontogenic tumors and is more commonly seen in females. Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a locally destructive but benign lesion of the jaws containing osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells in a fibrovascular stroma. CGCG makes up approximately 10% of all benign jaw tumors and typically occurs in females younger than 30 years of

Echinococcus is the smallest of the major tapeworms. Humans are incidental hosts who become infected by exposure to soil contaminated with ova from the feces of the canine definitive hosts. The major species are E. granulosus (cystic echinococcosis) and E. multilocularis (alveolar or sylvatic echinococcosis), both common worldwide but unusual and not reportable in the United States. Human disease is characterized by slowly growing visceral cystic masses often containing daughter cysts and hydatid sand. In nonendemic areas, the clinical evaluation includes imaging, serology, and surgery; metast
