Epidermolytic hyperkeratosis (EH) is an abnormality of epidermal maturation, most commonly due to mutations in keratins 1 and 10, which may be a congenital or an acquired defect. The term epidermolytic acanthoma was applied to a solitary discrete epidermal proliferation characterized by EH. Subsequently there have been several reports of disseminated epidermolytic acanthomas. We report a rare case of multiple epidermolytic acanthomas localized to the scrotum. With the aetiology of epidermolytic acanthoma unknown, trauma has been postulated as a possible cause. Our patient repetitively scratche

We report a patient with two synchronous distinct masses in the same hemithorax both of which got the diagnosis of benign localized fibrous tumor of the pleura. The plain chest X-ray was rather obscured due to a large left-sided pleural effusion, but her subsequent computerized chest tomography revealed a heterogeneous hypodense soft tissue mass, which was pleural in origin, sitting on the diaphragm bathed in fluid. At thoracotomy, we detected two distinct masses in the left hemithorax, both arising from the visceral pleura via their vascular pedicles.

A 32-year-old woman was admitted to our institution with dysuria and pain in the left foot. She was diagnosed with von Recklinghausen disease based on the physical findings, and an elastic, firm mass was palpable with the fingertip on the posterior wall of the rectum. Ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a solid tumor, which measured 8 cm in diameter, in the presacral space. The tumor was diagnosed as a presacral solid tumor and the tumor was extirpated. The specimen was a 10 x 8 x 8 cm yellowish solid tumor weighing 250 g. The histopathologic diagnosis

Coexisting (collision) cutaneous neoplasms of various types and combinations are well documented but relatively uncommon. This report describes the unusual occurrence of a malignant melanoma in situ (MMIS) colonizing a basal cell carcinoma (BCC). A 69-year-old man was considered clinically to have a melanocytic neoplasm or a pigmented BCC of the right ear. Biopsy showed an MMIS, lentigo maligna type, juxtaposed to a typical BCC. The MMIS extended peripherally and into the BCC. Interspersed among the basaloid epithelial cell aggregates that extended 1.70 mm into the dermis were atypical melanoc

PURPOSE AND DESIGN: This report presents a comprehensive and statistical analysis of the brain tumor-polyposis (BTP) cases referred to as Turcot's syndrome in the literature.
RESULTS: BTP patients encompass a heterogeneous group that can be classified into two statistically distinct clinical entities based on phenotype of the polyps (P = .0001), presence of colorectal cancer (P = .0001), type of brain neoplasm, ie, glioma or medulloblastoma (P = .0001), presence of skin lesions (P = .0004) and cafe-au-lait spots (P = .0008), as well as consanguinity (P = .0135).
CONCLUSION: The first entity

A rare case of multiple small intestinal stromal cell tumours is described in a 79 year old woman who presented with melaena and anaemia. At surgery, about 40 lesions were noted on the serosal surface of the small intestine, the largest of these tumours being located in the mid-jejunum. This lesion showed central necrosis and haemorrhage with a sinus opening into the jejunal lumen. Histological examination of this jejunal tumour showed epithelioid and spindle shaped cells. A smaller biopsied tumour was a pure spindle cell lesion. Both lesions fitted the criteria for benign stromal cell tumours

Within the past few years, an increasing number of reports of Hodgkin's disease following the diagnosis of, and frequently coexisting with, mycosis fungoides have appeared. Previously, Hodgkin's disease found in the lymph nodes of the patient diagnosed as mycosis fungoides was considered as a transformed form of the mycosis fungoides. But, now it has been proven that Hodgkin's disease and mycosis fungoides are histologically and immunohistochemically distinct disease entities. We report a well-documented case of a man who developed Hodgkin's disease and mycosis fungoides simultaneously as a co

Liver adenomatosis is a rare entity in which multiple hepatic adenomas (more than 10) occur in patients with no prior history of oral contraceptives or androgenic steroid use. This report describes findings of this entity on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and discusses the differential diagnosis of this disease.

A 36-year-old woman presented with a solitary hepatic tumor. Macroscopically, the tumor measured 9 cm in greatest diameter, and was well encapsulated; it was reddish, and showed multiple foci of hemorrhage. Microscopic examination revealed two different patterns: a peripheral angiosarcoma surrounding a centrally located cavernous haemangioma. To our knowledge, such an entity has not been reported up to now. Possible pathomechanisms, radiological and pathological findings of this angiosarcoma of liver arising within a cavernous haemangioma are commented.

The authors report the case of a 41-year old patient with polycythaemia and a mixed testicular tumour (seminoma with choriocarcinomatous contingent). The demonstration of a raised erythropoietin level in the tumor tissue with a high gradient in relation to the serum argues in favour of secondary paraneoplastic polycythaemia. With a follow-up of 5 years, the patient is still in complete remission from his two diseases. This case may represent the first case of testicular tumour responsible for secondary polycythaemia.

Thirty-six cases of a heterochronous cancer in the remnant stomach following a partial gastrectomy for gastric cancer have been compared with 12 cases of gastric cancer following a gastrectomy for benign diseases. Lesions of a heterochronous cancer are characteristically similar to those of a synchronous multiple gastric cancer. Patients with a heterochronous cancer were found to have high rates of synchronous multiple cancers in the resected stomach as compared with none found in gastric cancer patients following surgical operation for a benign disease. Lesions of cancer after surgery for a b

A very unusual case of an apparent primary clear cell adenocarcinoma of the vulva in a 57-year-old female is presented. The carcinoma arose in an area of endometriosis within the canal of Nuck in the superior aspect of the right labium majus. Smooth muscle fibers presumably representing remnants of the extrapelvic round ligament were found associated with the endometriosis. Of interest is the fact that the patient underwent right herniorrhaphy 9 years earlier. Although several cases of primary adenocarcinoma arising within the vulva have been reported, none has arisen in areas of endometriosis

In a 36-year-old woman with monosymptomatic haematuria, urography showed moderate left-sided hydronephrosis and hydroureter. Five years later the dilation had increased and laparotomy showed a short stricture distally in the left ureter. Microscopy revealed external and internal ureteral endometriosis. Resection of the stricture was followed by regression of the dilation. To avoid irreversible kidney damage from unrecognized ureteral endometriosis, all known endometriosis patients should undergo urography.

Primary liver sarcoma is rare and especially its coexistence with hepatocellular carcinoma is extremely rare. We have collected eight cases of their coexistence in the literatures. The patient was a 62-year-old male complaining of right hypochondralgia and general malaise for about one month. CT scanning revealed the liver tumor and right hepatic lobectomy was performed. The tumor was sized in 14 by 9 by 9 cm and composed of hepatocellular carcinoma and rhabdomyosarcoma, which were were collided. Apparent striations in the rhabdomyosarcoma cells was observed under light-microscope. Alphafetopr

This is a report of a case of juvenile gastrointestinal polyposis consisting of widespread juvenile polyps encountered from the stomach into the rectum. Only few cases have been reported, and extra intestinal manifestations include clubbing of fingers, macrocephaly, hypotonia, hepatosplenomegaly, anemia, and protein-losing enteropathy. The outcome is usually dismal, the children barely becoming older than 2 years. Modern fibreoptic endoscopy with polypectomies performed via the upper and lower gastrointestinal intestinal tracts and via a midbowel ileostomy may offer a viable form of management

The Connecticut Tumor Registry (CTR) was established in 1941 and is the oldest population-based cancer registry in the world. Since 1935, all malignant tumors have been registered, and cancer patients are followed annually for vital status. Reporting by hospitals of all cancers diagnosed in Connecticut residents became mandatory in 1971. The reporting physician or hospital makes the initial determination as to whether a tumor is an independent primary cancer, recurrent tumor, or metastatic lesion. In addition, the Registry maintains stringent quality control procedures to avoid duplication of

A 43-year-old man was admitted to our clinic because of a 2-month history of anorexia, general fatigue and an upper abdominal mass. Upper GI series and endoscopic examination revealed Borrmann IV-type gastric cancer. The histologic diagnosis was undifferentiated adenocarcinoma. His peripheral blood contained approximately 3% atypical lymphocytes. These lymphocytes were identified to be ATL-cell based on E-rosette formation assays and anti-ATL associated antigen-antibody tests. Although the patient had no typical ATL-symptoms, we made a diagnosis of double cancer, i.e. gastric cancer and smould

Cowden's disease (multiple hamartoma syndrome), a rare genodermatosis, is inherited in an autosomal-dominant genetic pattern. It is characterized by mesodermal and epithelial hamartomas appearing as verrucous papules occurring predominantly over the central portion of the face, with perioral and acral papular lesions and papillomatosis of the lips, gingiva, and tongue extending through the entire length of the gastrointestinal tract. These skin lesions have been found to be associated with a number of benign and malignant tumors involving the breast, thyroid, skin, ovaries, adipose tissue, and
