Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) is a highly aggressive neoplasm and a histologically distinctive variant of squamous cell carcinoma. Since the first description by Wain et al. in 1986, only 18 cases with BSCC in the nasal cavity or in the paranasal cavity have been reported in the English literature. We report herein two cases of BSCC of the maxillary sinus. Case 1 was 78-year-old man, who received preoperative radiotherapy and operation. He was alive without disease for 25 months after the operation. Case 2 was a 60-year-old man who received radiotherapy without operation. He died of

AIMS: To determine the human papillomavirus DNA status of schistosomal associated squamous cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder in South Africa.
METHODS: Twenty five archival samples of bladder squamous cell carcinoma associated with Schistosoma haematobium were subjected to non-isotopic in situ hybridisation and the polymerase chain reaction for the detection of human papillomavirus 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 33 genotypes.
RESULTS: Using these two techniques, none of the 25 cases was shown to harbour human papillomavirus DNA.
CONCLUSIONS: This study abrogates the role of human papillomavirus

The presence of squamous cell carcinoma within capillaries and/or venules in the immediate vicinity of primary lesions of the oral cavity and oropharynx may be related to regional lymph node metastasis. To evaluate this possibility, we have reviewed the clinical and histopathologic features of 43 consecutive cases of previously untreated T2 or greater squamous cell carcinoma of these sites managed with simultaneous surgical treatment of the primary neoplasm and the neck. The incidence of histologically proved cervical metastasis for all lesions with vascular invasion compared with those withou

BACKGROUND: Overexpression of KIT, a tyrosine kinase receptor protein encoded by the proto-oncogene c-kit, is observed in human neoplasms such as gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), myeloproliferative disorders, melanoma and seminoma. In patients with GIST, overexpression of mutated KIT within the tumor is predictive of response to molecular targeted therapy using imatinib. However, the role of KIT expression in thymic carcinoma is not fully understood.
METHODS: Thymic epithelial tumors from 37 patients (17 thymic carcinomas and 20 thymomas) were examined. Immunohistochemical staining wi

Allogenic peripheral stem cell transplantation (HSCT), a procedure that is widely used in the treatment of a large number of malignant and nonmalignant hematological diseases, is still associated with a wide range of complications, one of the most important of which is graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). The patients undergoing allogeneic HSCT are at high risk of developing secondary neoplasms, particularly leukemias and lymphomas. Solid tumors are less frequent, but their incidence seems to be higher in the patients who develop GVHD; the most frequent solid tumors are squamous cell carcinomas.

To evaluate the role of human papillomaviruses (HPV) in the development of premalignant lesions and cancers of the skin in the general population, 314 biopsies obtained from 227 patients with benign neoplasms, premalignant lesions, and cancers of the skin and from 25 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lip were analyzed by Southern blot hybridization. DNA probes specific for various cutaneous and genital HPV types were used in hybridizations conducted under nonstringent or stringent conditions. HPV DNA sequences were only detected in eight specimens obtained from six patients: HPV 34

Penile and preputial neoplasia in horses occurs infrequently and represents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The present study was carried out on a total number of 21 equids (14 stallions and 7 donkeys) suffered from different penile and preputial neoplasia. Diagnosis of neoplasms was based up on history of the case, clinical examination as well as histopathological evaluation. Animals with penile and preputial neoplasms were underwent local excision and partial phallectomy with a slightly modified version of the techniques described by William's. The diagnosed neoplasms were penile and

The gross and histopathologic findings for a primary tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma in a captive 11-yr-old male polar wolf (Canis lupus arctos) are described. The carcinoma had metastasized to regional lymph nodes of the pharynx, the precardial mediastinum, and the lungs. Tumor suppressor protein TP53 was detected by immunohistochemistry in the nuclei of poorly differentiated, cytokeratin-positive cells of the primary neoplasm and the metastases. Canine oral papillomavirus DNA was not detectable by polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Forty-six examples of carcinoma cuniculatum, a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, were studied by means of light and electron microscopy and immunoperoxidase techniques. The tumors usually presented as ulcerated, fungating, and polypoid masses with openings of sinus tracts onto the skin surface that exuded foul-smelling greasy material when pressure was applied. On microscopic examination the tumors were seen to be composed mainly of mature squamous keratinocytes with foci of cellular atypia. Electron microscopic studies revealed features of well-differentiated squamous cell

In order to ascertain the frequency and distribution of isochromosomes in neoplasia, we surveyed the cytogenetic data from 20,007 tumors with clonal chromosome aberrations reported in the literature. Tumor types for which at least 50 cases with acquired aberrations and 10 cases with isochromosomes had been reported were selected, yielding a total of 18,160 neoplasms. Of these, 1,792 cases (9.9%) displayed a total of 2,014 isochromosomes. The 9 most common isochromosomes (detected in at least 50 cases) were, in decreasing order of frequency, i(17q), i(8q), i(1q), i(12p), i(6p), i(7q), i(9q), i(

Although the majority of laryngeal malignancies are the conventional squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), a wide variety of malignant epithelial tumors can affect the larynx. Current treatment guidelines are designed to guide clinicians in management of conventional laryngeal SCC. Less is known about the biological behavior and responsiveness to therapy and overall outcomes of other malignant epithelial lesions. Because a spectrum of disease biology is represented by these rare phenotypes, an understanding of the basic biology can help direct management to optimize clinical outcome in this group of

BACKGROUND: The correlation between Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and salivary gland neoplasms is still controversial. Data in the literature are conflicting, reporting the presence of the HPV-DNA in a significant percentage of cases or none. We investigated the presence of HPV in a series of salivary gland neoplasms using fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) samples to explore its potential oncogenic role in salivary gland tumor development.
METHODS: The study included 66 salivary gland lesions from 65 patients. For all cases, residual cytological material in the needle hub, once direct smear

In this article, we review the chapter on tumors of the larynx, hypopharynx, trachea and parapharyngeal space in the new edition of the WHO book, focusing on the new developments in comparison to the previous edition. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and its variants are by far the most common malignancies at these locations, with very limited new insights. The most important is the introduction of new targeted treatment-checkpoint inhibitors, with a new task for pathologists, who may help to predict the response to treatment by analyzing the expression of targeted proteins in biopsy samples. Alternative therapies have been sought to alleviate mutilation and morbidity associated with surgery for vulvar neoplasms. Our prime objective was to assess tumor absence in pathological vulvar and nodal specimens following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced vulvar neoplasms. Data were retrospectively collected from January 2001 to May 2009 from 22 patients treated with neoadjuvant therapy for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva. Neoadjuvant treatment consisted of inguino-pelvic radiotherapy (50 Gy) in association with chemotherapy when possible. Surgery occurr

The fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytologic findings in 18 cases of metastatic neoplasms of the breast are reported. The cases were encountered in a combined series of 2,529 FNA breast biopsies, of which 666 were malignant; the metastatic neoplasms of the breast thus constituted 2.7% of all the malignant breast tumors. The series consists of 15 women and 3 men, with a mean age of 48 years (range of 11 to 73 years). Sixteen biopsies confirmed metastatic malignancy in patients with known extramammary primaries; the prebiopsy clinical diagnoses in six of the patients were benign breast lesions. In

INTRODUCTION: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) significantly increases the risk of skin malignancies due to impaired DNA repair mechanisms. The estimated incidence is 1 in 250 000 in the USA. Patients with XP are more likely to develop cutaneous neoplasms, primarily melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and the most prevalent cutaneous and ocular tumor is SCC.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 21-year-old male from western Nepal who presented to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital with multiple lesions on the face and was diagnosed with SCC and BCC. We

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a commonly used rapid diagnostic modality for diagnosing salivary gland tumors. Accurate fine-needle aspiration cytology diagnosis of salivary gland neoplasm can be challenging due to the presence of various metaplasia and infarction. Post-FNAC infarction is a known phenomenon in salivary gland tumors; however, spontaneous infarction is a rare occurrence. Here, we report five cases of benign salivary gland neoplasms with spontaneous infarction, diagnosed on cytological examination. Clinical findings were recorded; cytological examination and histologic
