Minimal change prion retinopathy: Morphometric comparison of retinal and brain prion deposits in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) is the most commonly diagnosed human prion disease caused by the abnormal misfolding of the 'cellular' prion protein (PrPC) into the transmissible 'scrapie-type' prion form (PrPSc). Neuropathologic evaluation of brains with sCJD reveals abnormal PrPSc deposits primarily in grey matter structures, often associated with micro-vacuolar spongiform changes in neuropil, neuronal loss, and gliosis. Abnormal PrPSc deposits have also been reported in the retina of patients with sCJD, but few studies have characterized the morphology of these retinal PrPSc depos…

Piriform cortex alterations in the Ts65Dn model for down syndrome.

Moreover, piriform cortex has a cruci … neurons in piriform cortex layer II in addition to a reduction in the expression of PSA-NCAM in the neuropil that subsequently can reflect impairment in structural plasticity. These data support the idea of an impaired environment with altered ratio of inhibition and excitation that involves a reduction in plasticity and dendritic atrophy, providing a poss …

The preclinical phase of the pathological process underlying sporadic Alzheimer's disease.

Abnormal tau lesions (non-argyrophilic pretangle material, argyrophilic neuropil threads, neurofibrillary tangles) in select types of neurons are crucial for the pathogenesis of sporadic Alzheimer's disease. Ongoing formation of these tau lesions persists into end-stage Alzheimer's disease and is not subject to remission. The early pretangle disease phase is a focus of increasing interest because only abnormal forms of the microtubule-associated protein tau are involved at that point and, in contrast to late-stage disease when amyloid-β deposition is present, this phase is temporally closer to…

Distribution of serotonin and dopamine in the central nervous system of the female mud crab, Scylla olivacea (Herbst).

In crustaceans serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DA) are neurotransmitters that play roles in the modulation of numerous physiological function … id body (HB), and protocerebral tract (PT), whereas DA-ir was present in neuronal cluster 1, the LG neuropils, and PT. In the brain, 5-HT-ir and DA-ir were detected in cells and fibers of neuronal clusters 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, and 15. In the ventral nerve cord, 5-HT-ir was present in neurons of the abdominal ganglia, whereas DA was only present in fiber …

Interaction between amyloid-β pathology and cortical functional columnar organization.

Amyloid-β plaques are one of the major neuropathological features in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Plaques are found in the extracellular space of telencephalic structures, and have been shown to disrupt neuronal connectivity. Since the disruption of connectivity may underlie a number of the symptoms of AD, understanding the distribution of plaques in the neuropil in relation to the connectivity pattern of the neuronal network is crucial. We measured the distribution and clustering patterns of plaques in the vibrissae-receptive primary sensory cortex (barrel cortex), in which the cortical columnar…

Encephalomyelitis of cattle caused by Akabane virus in southern Japan in 2006.

Six calves, aged between 55 days and 15 months, were presented between September and November 2006 with neurological signs including limb weakness and circling. Microscopical examination of the brain and spinal cord revealed the presence of non-suppurative encephalitis in all animals. Perivascular cuffing of lymphocytes and macrophages and diffuse gliosis was prominent in the cerebrum and degeneration and/or necrosis of neurons with vacuolation of the neuropil was present in the brainstem. Neuronal necrosis and neuronophagia were noted in the ventral horn of the spinal cord. The distribution o…

Central neurocytoma with remarkably large rosette formation and rapid malignant progression: a clinicopathological follow-up study with autopsy report.

BACKGROUND: Small fibrillary areas mimicking neuropils are known to be one of the histological features of ordinary central neurocytomas. It is known that Ki-67 labeling indices are an indicator for prognosis of central neurocytomas. CASE REPORT: A tumor arising from the lateral ventricle of a 42-year-old man was almost completely resected. The mass resembled an aneurysm-like hematoma at the septum pellucidum. Histologically, the tumor mainly consisted of synaptophysin-positive small round cells displaying prominent rosette formation and calcification. The Ki-67 labeling index of the tumor wa…

Selective changes in nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subtypes related to tobacco smoking: an immunohistochemical study.

Increases in neuronal nicotinic receptors (nAChRs) in response to nicotine exposure have been reported in cell cultures, rodent brains, and in the brains of human smokers. The present study examines alterations in alpha4 and alpha7 nAChR subunit cellular expression in human hippocampus and entorhinal cortex from normal elderly individuals with known smoking history. There were significant increases in the intensity of alpha4 immunoreactive neuropil, but not the number of cell bodies, in many regions of hippocampus and entorhinal cortex in smokers compared to age-matched non-smokers and ex-smok…

Differential activation of glomeruli in the ferret's main olfactory bulb by anal scent gland odours from males and females: an early step in mate identification.

Peripheral anosmia was previously found to disrupt sex discrimination and partner preference in male and female ferrets. Here we show direct … In rodents, 'atypical' MOB glomeruli, which have dense acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the neuropil, may be activated by body odours from conspecifics. No such AChE-staining 'atypical' glomeruli were found in the ferret's MOB, suggesting that in this carnivore they do not constitute a subset of MOB glomeruli that respond to body odourants. Canthaxanthin retinopathy. An investigation by light and electron microscopy and physicochemical analysis.

The eyes of a patient with canthaxanthin retinopathy were obtained at autopsy and examined by light and electron microscopy. Various tissues of one eye were also studied by physicochemical methods. Morphologically, there were red, birefringent, lipid-soluble crystals in the inner layers of the entire retina. They were particularly large and numerous perifoveally, where they were also clinically visible, but they also occurred frequently in a ring-shaped form peripherally and, less frequently, equatorially. The crystals were located in a spongy degeneration of the inner neuropil, where atrophy …

Three distinct classes of myenteric ganglia in mice and humans: insights from quantitative analyses.

BACKGROUND: The myenteric plexus primarily consists of the myenteric ganglia, which include enteric neurons, synaptic neuropils, and glial cells. Abnormal myenteric plexus formation can result in gastrointestinal disorders. Comprehensive morphological classification studies of myenteric ganglia remain limited. METHODS: Whole-mount immunofluorescence staining was used to label myenteric ganglia in colon tissue of mice and children. The ganglionic area and the number of intraganglion neurons were quantified by the K-means clustering algorithm. The guts of embryonic day 11.5 (E11.5) mouse were c…

Multielectrode array use in insect auditory neuroscience to unravel the spatio-temporal response pattern in the prothoracic ganglion of Mecopoda elongata.

Mechanoreceptors in hearing organs transduce sound-induced mechanical responses into neuronal signals, which are further processed and forwarded to the brain along a chain of neurons in the auditory pathway. Bushcrickets (katydids) have their ears in the front leg tibia, and the first synaptic integration of sound-induced neuronal signals takes place in the primary auditory neuropil of the prothoracic ganglion. By combining intracellular recordings of the receptor activity in the ear, extracellular multichannel array recordings on top of the prothoracic ganglion and hook electrode recordings a…

Changes in the synganglion of Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille, 1806) (Acari: Ixodidae) female ticks exposed to permethrin: an ultrastructural overview.
