High-resolution geostationary satellite observations of free tropospheric NO2 over North America and implications for lightning emissions.

Free tropospheric (FT) nitrogen dioxide (NO2) plays a critical role in atmospheric oxidant chemistry as a source of tropospheric ozone and of the hydroxyl radical (OH). It also contributes significantly to satellite-observed tropospheric NO2 columns, which should be considered when using these columns to quantify surface emissions of nitrogen oxide radicals (NOx ≡ NO + NO2). But large uncertainties remain in the sources and chemistry of FT NO2 because observations are sparse. Here, we construct a cloud-sliced FT NO2 (700 to 300 hPa) product from the Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollut

Effect of diesel blended with di-n-butyl ether/1-octanol on combustion and emission in a heavy-duty diesel engine.

Two kinds of C8 isomers, di-n-butyl ether (DNBE) and 1-octanol, as potential oxygen-containing alternative fuels, show important value in the trade-off between efficiency and emission. In the present work, the effects of DNBE/1-octanol with different proportions (0, 10%, and 20%) blended into diesel on the combustion characteristics, fuel economy, and emission characteristics in a six-cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine were studied at low, medium, and high loads. 1-Octanol with a 20% blending ratio showed different combustion characteristics in the cylinder compared with the other fuels. The ec

Physiological and transcriptomic responses of Heterosigma akashiwo to nitrogen deficiency and urea utilization.

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for phytoplankton growth. The availability of ambient N and its chemical forms are critically important for the formation of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Although previous studies have explored the transcriptomic responses of Heterosigma akashiwo to N conditions, these analyses were largely descriptive and lacked in-depth characterization of the molecular mechanisms underlying urea utilization and N deficiency responses. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive physiological and transcriptomic investigation of this globally distributed HAB species

Excretion of excess nitrogen and increased survival by loss of SLC6A19 in a mouse model of ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency.

Protein catabolism ultimately yields toxic ammonia, which must be converted to urea by the liver for renal excretion. In extrahepatic tissues, ammonia is temporarily converted primarily to glutamine for subsequent hepatic extraction. Urea cycle disorders (UCDs) are inborn errors of metabolism causing impaired ureagenesis, leading to neurotoxic accumulation of ammonia and brain glutamine. Treatment includes dietary protein restriction and oral "ammonia scavengers." These scavengers chemically combine with glutamine and glycine to yield excretable products, creating an alternate pathway of waste

Effects of adding betaine on biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal from simulated pickled vegetables wastewater.

Laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBR) were used to examine the effects of adding dosage and ways of adding betaine on nitrogen and phosphorus removal from simulated pickled vegetables wastewater under two different concentrations of salt. The activated sludge was pre-acclimated in a salt environment prior to the experiment. Adding 0.5-2.0 mM betaine to the synthetic wastewater, all the levels were found to be effective at improving the ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) removal with increased salt concentrations from 8 to 16 g/L, in which 1.0 mM betaine was found to be the most effective. [Effect of intermittent normobaric hypoxia on gastric and duodenal mucosa in man].

Clinical and laboratory examinations of 11 patients with peptic ulcer have shown that combined treatment using sessions of intermittent normobaric hypoxytherapy (10% of oxygen in 90% of nitrogen, length of respiration is 7 min., respiration of free air 3 min., such 6 cycles for 1 hour) promotes healing of ulcers, decreases dyspepsic and astheno-neurotic symptoms of disease. The method can be recommended for treating the patients with peptic ulcer and for preventing seasonal acute attacks in patients with relapses of this disease.

Meta-analysis of blood metabolomics reveals dysregulated amino acid, neurotransmitter, and energy pathways in depression.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a major psychiatric illness with a global burden, poor treatment response, and limited biological markers, leaving diagnosis reliant on behavioral rather than biological methods. While there is an increasing number of individual metabolomic studies investigating depression, comprehensive meta-analyses remain lacking. METHODS: In this study, we conducted three meta-analyses integrating 11 publicly available blood mass spectrometry (MS) datasets with 1050 samples (386 depression patients, 664 controls) and 1111 unique metabolites. Robust Rank Aggregation (RRA), Uniform

Enhancement of nitrogen and phosphorus removal by coupling pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification with an electro-enhanced A2/O process.

Conventional anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2/O) processes often exhibit low nutrient removal efficiency and high operational costs when treating carbon-limited wastewater from highway service areas. In this study, a pyrite-based autotrophic denitrification process coupled with an electro-enhanced A2/O system (PE-A2/O) was developed to treat synthetic highway service-area wastewater. At an applied voltage of 1.2 V, the reactor configured with an anoxic anode and an oxic cathode achieved the best nutrient-removal performance. The removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, TN, and PO43--P reached 96.89 ± 3.18%, 9

Viral infection collapses intracytoplasmic membrane integrity and autotrophic metabolism in ammonia-oxidizing Nitrosomonas europaea.

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) catalyze the first and rate-limiting step of nitrification. They are essential for nitrogen cycling in engineered and natural environments, yet little is known about their viruses or the consequences of phage infection for host physiology. Here, we report the isolation and characterization of a novel lytic bacteriophage, vB_NeuP-Nir1 (DSM 111086), infecting the model AOB Nitrosomonas europaea. Phage Nir1 ceased ammonia oxidation within hours, and caused complete lysis of host populations even at multiplicities of infection as low as 10-6. Electron microscopy re

Evolutionary and functional relationships between plant and microbial C1 metabolism in terrestrial ecosystems.

One-carbon (C1) metabolism, centered on the universal methyl donor S-adenosyl methionine (SAM), plays critical roles in biosynthesis, redox regulation, and stress responses across plants and microbes. A recently proposed photosynthetic C1 pathway links SAM methyl groups directly to RuBisCO-mediated CO2 assimilation and integrates with nitrogen and sulfur metabolism. Light-dependent SAM synthesis may regulate the methylation of biopolymers and specialized metabolites and help mitigate photorespiratory stress under elevated temperature and drought. Phylogenetic analysis of two core enzymes sugge

What is the character of N deposition and its proportion to NH3 and NOX inside horticultural greenhouse?

Nitrogen (N) deposition is a vital process of N cycling and is consequently important for the evaluation of N budgets. However, the character and quantity of N deposition inside the horticultural greenhouse remain unknown, impeding a deep understanding of N cycling among soil, vegetable and atmosphere. Here, we measured the dry and wet N deposition, and disentangled the relative percentages of ammonia (NH3) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) gases deposition based on the greenhouse vegetable cultivation experiment. Results found the annual N deposition, was 7.2-17.5 kg N·ha-1 under different chemical/o

Determining the differences in O3-NOx-VOCs sensitivity between sauna and roast days.

Temperature is a key meteorological factor that affects tropospheric ozone (O3), with both humid-heat (sauna days) and dry-heat (roast days) conditions leading to O3 exceedances. However, the mechanisms influencing O3 formation and degradation under these two weather conditions remain unclear. Therefore, experiments were conducted in Beijing from 2019 to 2021 to observe O3, its precursors, and related meteorological elements. A total of 18 days with O3 exceedances were selected, including 10 sauna days and 8 roast days. The results of this study revealed that on roast days, the sensible heat f

Real-world emissions and fuel consumption of gasoline and hybrid light duty vehicles under local and regulatory drive cycles.

In this study, driving trajectory data from private vehicles were collected in Toronto, Canada to construct representative local drive cycles. In addition, real-driving emission testing for four conventional gasoline vehicles (ICEV) and one hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) was conducted in the same region using a Portable Emissions Measurement System. Instantaneous fuel consumption and emissions of Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), and Particle Number (PN) were measured. The results for all vehicles indicate that the acceleration state tends to generate the highest emissions and fuel c

Nitrogen photoreduction on desert sands under sterile conditions.

Sands from various geographic locations reduce N(2) from the air to NH(3) and traces of N(2)H(4) on exposure to sunlight. This N(2) photofixation occurs under sterile conditions on the surface of finely dispersed titanium minerals such as rutile, utilizing reducing equivalents generated through the photolysis of chemisorbed H(2)O. Abiological N(2) photofixation is suggested to be part of the nitrogen cycle in arid and semiarid regions. It is estimated that about 10 x 10(5) tons of N(2) is photoreduced on the total surface of the earth's deserts per year.

[Effects of Long-term Nitrogen Application on Soil Bacterial Community Structure, Functional Groups, and Assembly Processes in Tea Gardens].

Nitrogen fertilizer application is an essential aspect of tea plantation management to improve the yield and quality of tea, and the nitrogen fertilizer constitutes the major artificial factor affecting the soil bacterial community structure. The field experiment (small cement pond) was set up in the base of the Tea Research Institute of Fujian Province (beginning in 2011), and four nitrogen levels were applied: N0 (0 kg·km-2), N1 (112.5 kg·hm-2), N2 (225 kg·hm-2), and N3 (450 kg·hm-2, all measured by N), and each treatment was repeated four times. We used 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing t

Protective mechanisms in hypobaric decompression.

BACKGROUND: To reduce bubble formation and growth during hypobaric exposures, a denitrogenation or nitrogen "washout" procedure is performed. This procedure consists of prebreathing oxygen fractions as close to one as possible (oxygen prebreathe) prior to depressurization before ascending to the working altitude or low spacesuit pressures. During the NASA prebreathe reduction program (PRP), it was determined that the addition of a light arm exercise to short, individually designed, performance-based heavy exercise (dual cycle ergometry) during an abbreviated 2-h prebreathe (F1O2 - 1.0) reduced

Phase-resolved monitoring reveals a dominant dissolved greenhouse gas footprint in the AOA process treating low C/N municipal wastewater.

The anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) process offers a low-carbon pathway for biological nitrogen removal from low carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio municipal wastewater, yet its complete greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint across gas and liquid phases remains unresolved. This study systematically quantified gaseous and dissolved CH4, CO2, and N2O at each operational stage of a laboratory-scale AOA system using phase-resolved monitoring. The system achieved stable nitrogen removal of 86.2%, with a CO2-equivalent direct gaseous emission factor was 25.2%-36.6% lower than that of the conventional wastewater

Porphyrinic N4 channels of zinc ions for the electrochemical reversibility of zinc plating/stripping.

A Zn2+-coordinated porphyrinic artificial solid-electrolyte interphase (αSEI) layer, named [Zn]PP-4COO-(Zn), was developed to improve the reversibility of zinc metal plating/stripping in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). Inspired by nitrogen-terminating sites of biological molecules coordinating and transporting zinc in zinc metabolic processes, the αSEI layer was designed with zinc ions connecting porphyrinic building blocks to form two-dimensional clathrate sheets and stacking xy-plane sheets along the z-axis to allow N4 cages to align and form porphyrinic N4 channels for zinc transport. Site-2 protease Sll0528 interacts with RbcR to regulate carbon/nitrogen homeostasis in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803.

Cyanobacteria play pivotal roles in global biogeochemical cycles through oxygenic photosynthesis. To maintain cellular homeostasis, these organisms utilize sophisticated acclimation mechanisms to adapt to environmental fluctuations, particularly concerning nitrogen availability. While nitrogen deprivation induces dormancy, excess ammonium can have toxic effects on cyanobacteria and other photosynthetic organisms-a phenomenon for which the acclimation mechanisms remain poorly understood. Through the physiological characterization of knockout and overexpression mutants in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6
