Background factors for intra-operative hypotension during hip fracture repair surgery in the elderly under spinal anesthesia managed by orthopedic surgeons: A retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Spinal anesthesia is used for femoral trochanteric fracture surgery, but frequently induces hypotension and the causative factors remain unclear. We examined background factors for the use of an intraoperative vasopressor in elderly patients receiving spinal anesthesia for femoral trochanteric fracture surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 203 patients >75 years (mean age, 87.9 years) with femoral trochanteric fractures who underwent short nail fixation under orthopedically managed spinal anesthesia at our hospital between April 2020 and July 2023. Patients were divided in

Plant growth-promoting traits of culturable seed microbiome of citrus species from Purvanchal Himalaya.

Despite Northeastern India being "Treasure House of Citrus Genetic Wealth," genetic erosion of citrus diversity poses severe concern with a corresponding loss in seed microbial diversity. The seed microbiome of citrus species unique to the Purvanchal Himalaya is seldom explored for their use in sustainable orchard management. Isolation and characterization of culturable seed microbiomes of eight citrus species, namely, Citrus reticulata Blanco, C. grandis (L.) Osbeck, C. latipes Tanaka, C. megaloxycarpa Lushaigton, C. jambhiri Lush, C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck, C. macroptera Montr, and C. indica T

Rhizobium tropici genes involved in free-living salt tolerance are required for the establishment of efficient nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with Phaseolus vulgaris.

Characterization of nine transposon-induced mutants of Rhizobium tropici with decreased salt tolerance (DST) allowed the identification of eight gene loci required for adaptation to high external NaCl. Most of the genes also were involved in adaptation to hyperosmotic media and were required to overcome the toxicity of LiCl. According to their possible functions, genes identified could be classified into three groups. The first group included two genes involved in regulation of gene expression, such as ntrY, the sensor element of the bacterial ntrY/ntrX two-component regulatory system involved

Partial deletion of the Rhizobium phaseoli CFN23 symbiotic plasmid implies a concomitant amplification of plasmid DNA sequences.

Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar phaseoli CFN23 loses its ability to nodulate beans at a high frequency because of a deletion of part of its symbiotic (pSym) plasmid (Soberón-Chávez et al., 1986). We report here that at least 80 kb of pSym are deleted upon loss of the symbiotic phenotype; the deletion removes the nitrogenase structural nifHDK and the common nodABC genes. The size of the deleted pSym is not reduced, since it is accompanied by an amplification of other pSym plasmid sequences. This genetic rearrangement is similar to the deletion and amplification of yeast mitochondrial DNA leading

The Line in the Heart: Complicity, Utility, and the Ethics of Tainted Data.

The bioethics literature on "tainted data" (medical knowledge produced through atrocity) has largely settled one question: such data may be used, if at all, only with explicit condemnation of the methods that produced it. It has left a second question unanswered: what operational form should that condemnation take? This article addresses both questions through paired histories. Fritz Haber's nitrogen fixation, which feeds much of the world, and the frostbite and pathogen experiments of the Japanese Imperial Army's Unit 731, purchased by the United States with grants of immunity, mark the two p…

Aims: To investigate the role of the RegSR-NifA regulatory cascade in the oxygen control of nitric oxide (NO) reduction in the soybean endos … nes. Innovation: NO is a reactive gas that, at high levels, acts as a potent inhibitor of symbiotic nitrogen fixation. In this paper, we report new insights into the regulation of NO reductase, the major enzyme involved in NO removal in rhizobia. This knowledge will be crucial for the development of new strategies and management practices in agriculture, in particu …

[A case of acute renal failure following compartment syndrome after the surgery for femoral neck fracture].

Compartment syndrome is known to develop after a prolonged surgery in the lithotomy position. We experienced acute renal failure following compartment syndrome after the surgery in hemilithotomy position. A 62-year-old man underwent a left hip fixation for femoral neck fracture. The surgical leg was placed into traction in a foot piece and the intact leg was placed in the hemilithotomy position. Because of the difficulty in repositioning and the trouble with fluoroscope, the surgery took over 5 hours. He suffered acute pain, swelling and spasm in his intact leg placed into hemilithotomy after

Circadian clocks in fuel harvesting and energy homeostasis.

Circadian systems have evolved in plants, eubacteria, neurospora, and the metazoa as a mechanism to optimize energy acquisition and storage in synchrony with the rotation of the Earth on its axis. In plants, circadian clocks drive the expression of genes involved in oxygenic photosynthesis during the light and nitrogen fixation during the dark, repeating this cycle each day. In mammals, the core clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) functions to entrain extra-SCN and peripheral clocks to the light cycle, including regions central to energy homeostasis and sleep, as well as peripheral tiss…

[Subpopulations of lymphocytes in onchocercal nodules].

Fourty onchocercal nodules were taken from patients living in forest areas where onchocerciasis is highly endemic, in order to identify the various types of lymphocytes present in these nodules. For this purpose, each nodule was submitted to two histological procedures: one after fixation in formalin of part of the nodule and hematoxylin-eosin stain; the other after freezing part of the nodule in liquid nitrogen, cryostat cutting and staining by immuno-peroxidase method using avidin-biotin and the following monoclonal antibodies: Pan B, OK T3, OK T4 and OK T8. Fifty-five of the 40 nodules show

Redox imaging of human breast cancer core biopsies: a preliminary investigation.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The clinical gold standard for breast cancer diagnosis relies on invasive biopsies followed by tissue fixation for subsequent histopathological examination. This process renders the specimens to be much less suitable for biochemical or metabolic analysis. Our previous metabolic imaging data in tumor xenograft models showed that the mitochondrial redox state is a sensitive indicator that can distinguish between normal and tumor tissue. In this study, we investigated whether the same redox imaging technique can be applied to core biopsy samples of human breast cancer an

Microbial metabolic potential for carbon degradation and nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) acquisition in an ombrotrophic peatland.

This study integrated metagenomic and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic approaches to investigate microbial metabolic potential for organic matter decomposition and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) acquisition in soils of an ombrotrophic peatland in the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF), Minnesota, USA. This analysis revealed vertical stratification in key enzymatic pathways and taxa containing these pathways. Metagenomic analyses revealed that genes encoding laccases and dioxygenases, involved in aromatic compound degradation, declined in relative abundance with depth, while the r

Differential regulation of the "phytoglobin-nitric oxide respiration" in Medicago truncatula roots and nodules submitted to flooding.

Flooding induces hypoxia in plant tissues, impacting various physiological and biochemical processes. This study investigates the adaptive response of the roots and nitrogen-fixing nodules of Medicago truncatula in symbiosis with Sinorhizobium meliloti under short-term hypoxia caused by flooding. Four-week-old plants were subjected to flooding for 1-4 days. Physiological parameters as well as the expression of the senescence marker gene MtCP6 remained unchanged after 4 days of flooding, indicating no senescence onset. Hypoxia was evident from the first day, as indicated by the upregulation of
