Music Therapy Clinical Practice in Hospice: Differences Between Home and Nursing Home Delivery.

BACKGROUND: Hospice music therapy is delivered in both homes and nursing homes (NH). No studies to date have explored differences in music therapy delivery between home and NH hospice patients. OBJECTIVE: To compare music therapy referral reasons and delivery for hospice patients living in NH versus home. METHODS: A retrospective, electronic medical record review was conducted from a large U.S. hospice of patients receiving music therapy between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2010. RESULTS: Among the 4,804 patients, 2,930 lived in an NH and 1,847 patients lived at home. Compared to home,

Exploring factors associated with nurses' adoption of an evidence-based practice to reduce duration of catheterization.

Hospitalized adult patients are at increased risk for adverse outcomes, particularly when undergoing invasive procedures that include indwelling urinary catheterization. This study identified factors associated with nurses' adoption of an evidence-based practice to reduce the duration of catheterization and potential for catheter-associated urinary tract infections in hospitalized adults.

ICU nurses' perceptions of potential constraints and anticipated support to practice defibrillation: a qualitative study.

AIM: The study examines the experience of intensive care nurses in caring for patients in cardiac arrest, and their perceptions of introducing nurse-led defibrillation. METHOD: This was a descriptive, exploratory and qualitative study at an intensive care unit (ICU) of an acute regional hospital in Hong Kong. Twelve registered nurses were purposefully selected for interview. RESULTS: Although all the participants were trained in basic life support, only 50% were trained in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), and those trained in ACLS described having limited opportunities to apply their de

Virginia Henderson's principles and practice of nursing applied to organ donation after brain death.

Registered nurses were some of the first nonphysician organ transplant and donation specialists in the field, both in procurement and clinical arenas. Nursing theories are abundant in the literature and in nursing curricula, but none have been applied to the donation process. Noted nursing theorist Virginia Henderson (1897-1996), often referred to as the "first lady of nursing," developed a nursing model based on activities of living. Henderson had the pioneering view that nursing stands separately from medicine and that nursing consists of more than simply following physicians' orders. Hender

Duties and training of dental nurses: how do Irish practices conform to European standards?

AIM: The dental nurse is a key member of the dental team, having an important role in the delivery of oral healthcare. Despite this, there is considerable variation throughout Europe in relation to the level of training, permitted duties, and statutory registration of dental nurses. The purpose of this paper is to describe the opinions and attitudes of dental nurses to their roles and suitability of training in one European member state, Ireland, where statutory registration has recently been introduced. METHOD: A postal questionnaire was sent to 150 dental practitioners selected from the Iri

Emergency contraceptive pills over-the-counter: practices and attitudes of pharmacy and nurse-midwife providers.

Deregulation of emergency contraceptive pills (ECP) has led to pharmacy staff becoming a new provider group of ECP, together with nurse-midwives, who are already experienced in prescribing contraceptives. This postal questionnaire survey aimed to assess practices and attitudes towards ECP and the over-the-counter (OTC)-availability among pharmacy staff (n=237) and nurse-midwives (n=163). The overall response rate was 89%. Both study groups were positive to ECP and the OTC-availability and the vast majority agreed that sexually active women should be aware of ECP and that routine information ab

Primary health care services provided by nurse practitioners and family physicians in shared practice.

BACKGROUND: Collaborative practice involving nurse practitioners (NPs) and family physicians (FPs) is undergoing a renaissance in Canada. However, it is not understood what services are delivered by FPs and NPs working collaboratively. One objective of this study was to determine what primary health care services are provided to patients by NPs and FPs working in the same rural practice setting. METHODS: Baseline data from 2 rural Ontario primary care practices that participated in a pilot study of an outreach intervention to improve structured collaborative practice between NPs and FPs were

A nurse practitioner as the first point of contact for urgent medical problems in a general practice setting.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the suitability of nurse practitioners for assessing and managing urgent clinical problems presenting in primary care. METHODS: Patients registered at a suburban group practice presenting with acute medical problems were offered the choice of seeing a GP or a nurse practitioner. The outcomes of 1000 consultations were analysed by recording the repeat consultation rate, the prescription-issue rate and the rate of referral to secondary care, as well as investigating patient satisfaction and the number of dysfunctional consultations and misdiagnos

Registered nurses' knowledge and practices of teaching and performing breast exams among elderly women.

This study was designed to identify registered nurses' knowledge and beliefs regarding breast cancer in elderly women, and to identify the practices of registered nurses in performing breast exams and teaching breast self-examination (BSE) to this client group. Correlational analysis using Pearson moment correlation showed a weak inverse relationship between nurses' attitudes toward the elderly and performing and teaching breast exams. As the nurse's negativism about aging increased, the incidence of teaching and performing exams decreased. A strong relationship was found between thorough and

Social Media Use and Digital Professionalism in Nursing Practice: Cross-Sectional Questionnaire Study.

BACKGROUND: The rapid growth of social media has transformed communication, with more than 5.66 billion users worldwide in 2025 who spent an average of 141 minutes daily on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and TikTok. Nurses frequently use social media to exchange work-related information, communicate with others, and relieve stress. While social media can support professional development, excessive or inappropriate use at work may compromise patient care. Despite widespread use, research on nurses' demographic factors and actual workplace social media behaviors remain

Evaluating Humanisation in Intensive Care Nursing Practice: An Exploratory Study Using the HUMAS Scale.

BACKGROUND: Humanised care is central to nursing practice, yet sustaining relational and emotionally responsive care may be particularly challenging in intensive care environments characterised by technological complexity, clinical instability and repeated exposure to suffering. Humanisation should therefore be understood not as a single professional attribute, but as a multidimensional and context-dependent aspect of nursing practice. AIM: To explore humanisation-related dimensions among nurses working in an adult intensive care unit using the Healthcare Professional Humanisation Scale (HUMA

This violence and aggression also includes healthcare students including nursing and midwifery students. There is limited evidence available regarding the experiences and thoughts of nursing and midwifery students about this phenomenon. AIM: To explore student nurse and midwife experiences of violence when in the placement setting. METHODS: A mixed-methods cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted
