In professionally conditioned HIV infections of medical personnel, blood has so far been the only source of infection that is of any importance. Hence, measures to prevent such infections must primarily aim at avoiding any contact with blood from HIV-infected patients. One must distinguish between what is medically safe and what is legally safe. The authors have the impression that in order to be "legally safe" one must perform a test dose. To evaluate the usefulness and the safety of cefuzonam (CZON, L-105) against obstetric and gynecological infections, we conducted clinical trials and obtained the results summarized as follows. 1. Thirteen patients with obstetric and gynecological infections (intrauterine infection 2 cases, adnexitis 7, 1 case each of abscess of adnexa uteri, abscess of the vaginal wall, pyelonephritis, and mammitis) were treated with CZON. A series of 117 cases of emergency obstetric hysterectomy performed between 1976 and 1985 is reviewed. The indications included ruptured uterus (53.8%), intractable postpartum haemorrhage (20.5%), placenta accreta (7.7%), major degree of placenta praevia (7.7%), haemorrhage at Caesarean section (4.5%), couvelaire uterus (3.4%) and abdominal pregnancy (2.6%). Between January 1974 and December 1984, 4 cases of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) during pregnancy and 15 cases in the post-partum period, have been reported. Their frequency reaches 1.5% of the deliveries. The most important encouraging circumstances are a past history of DVT and Caesarean section. The treatment is difficult. In light of the 18 cases reviewed, the surgical treatment gives the best results.

Ninety-four family nurse practitioners provided information about the extent of their obstetrics practice within the general activity categories of: diagnosing and managing normal pregnancy; diagnosing and managing problems in pregnancy; parent education during pregnancy; labor and delivery management; neonatal management and evaluation; and post-partum evaluation of the mother. Psychological drawbacks of intensive obstetrics on the one hand and the results from psychology in the perinatal period on the other hand demand a new mental hygiene in the delivery room and on maternity wards. The "family-oriented obstetrics" met these problems best. Interviews were made with 650 mothers, just after delivery to find on the attitude for "family-oriented obstetrics". Presence of husband in the delivery room is wanted from 47,4% of the married couple. 98,15% from the mothers wanted nursing and 83,69% rooming-in.

Most urinary fistulae of obstetric origin involve the bladder. The ureter is rarely injured. The authors report three cases of uretero-uterine fistulae, an entity accounting for 1.6% of all urinary fistulae resulting from obstetric trauma. Diagnosis and management are discussed with reference to 19 cases of uretero-uterine fistulae reported in the literature.
