Rotation velocity change and motion sickness in an optokinetic drum.

BACKGROUND: Stationary subjects who view the interior of an optokinetic drum often experience motion sickness (MS) symptoms, perhaps because visual and vestibular sensory inputs are in conflict. It was predicted that intermittently changing drum rotation velocity would cause an increase in sensory conflict, and subsequently lead to more MS. Visual input indicating frequent changes in self-motion would not be consistent with vestibular input indicating no self-motion. When drum rotation is steady, visual and vestibular inputs are more likely to agree given that the vestibular organs only respon

Sarcoidosis in young children.

Sarcoidosis in children less than 6 years of age is a rare occurrence. Affected patients, however, have a characteristic triad of involved organs-skin, joints, and eyes. Cutaneous changes usually take the form of asymptomatic eczematous or infiltrated plaques and papules. Swollen synovium produces articular changes which are much more visible than symptomatic-pain is minimal and range of motion is usually not substantially impaired. Involvement of the eye may produce much more severe and permanent damage, however. Chest and joint x-rays are usually normal.

Nonlinear optical signatures of spin relaxation in 2D perovskites.

Spin-orbit coupling splits the exciton resonances of two-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (2D-OIHPs) into an optically active fine structure. Although circularly polarized light can induce macroscopic spin polarizations in ensembles of quantum wells, the orientations of the angular momentum vectors associated with individual excitons generally randomize on sub-picosecond timescales in 2D-OIHPs with single lead-iodide layers. In the present work, we investigate the nonlinear optical signatures of spin depolarization in 2D-OIHP materials with various organic layer thicknesses and

An organosynthetic soft robotic respiratory simulator.

In this work, we describe a benchtop model that recreates the motion and function of the diaphragm using a combination of advanced robotic and organic tissue. First, we build a high-fidelity anthropomorphic model of the diaphragm using thermoplastic and elastomeric material based on clinical imaging data. We then attach pneumatic artificial muscles to this elastomeric diaphragm, pre-programmed to move in a clinically relevant manner when pressurized. By inserting this diaphragm as the divider between two chambers in a benchtop model-one representing the thorax and the other the abdomen-and sub

Paroxysmal kinesigenic choreoathetosis in hyperthyroidism.

Paroxysmal kinesigenic choreoathetosis is an unusual movement disorder often triggered by attempts to use the limbs, and has sometimes been associated with diffuse or focal brain injury. We report its occurrence in hyperthyroidism, with which choreoathetosis has rarely been described in the past without known cause. Choreoathetosis has also occurred with other metabolic and toxic disorders, and the mechanism is uncertain. The development of involuntary movements activated by limb motion during hyperthyroidism suggests an influence by thyroid hormone or metabolic state on motor neurone excitabi

[Pathogenesis of obsessional states against a psychopathic background].

The paper is concerned with a clinical study of 37 psychopaths with obsessional symptoms: 24 anancasts and 13 psychasthenics. In 14 patients the obsessional ideas were combined with obsessional actions, in 28 cases there was a defect of integrative automatized motions, in 6 cases--tics, in 2--writing spasms and in 1 case--a spastic torticollis without symptoms of an organic lesion of the nervous system. A hyperkinesis of the tic-type, professional dyskinesia and possibly obsessional actions may be explained by a functional dissociation of the neocrotex with subcortex and limbico-reticular comp

Birth and breakdown of breathing and rotobreathing cyclops states in Kuramoto networks with higher-mode coupling.

Cluster synchronization states often serve as organizing centers for collective dynamics, but their destabilization can open unexpected routes to both coherent and incoherent behaviors. We study such transitions for cyclops states in globally coupled networks of identical Kuramoto-Sakaguchi rotators with inertia and two-harmonic coupling. Stationary cyclops states consist of two coherent clusters and a solitary oscillator that maintains fixed phase differences with the clusters. Using Floquet analysis and numerical continuation of periodic orbits, we trace bifurcation routes for the birth and

Type I hair cells of striolar and central zones in vestibular organs are essential for head stability and postural control.

The vestibular system of the inner ear provides head motion and orientation information required for maintaining balance and spatial orientation. Each of the five vestibular sensory organs contains type I and type II hair cells (HCs). Type I HCs are particularly notable for their evolutionary adaptability and unique calyceal synapses, in which the vestibular afferent nerve ending envelopes the HC body. In vitro studies indicate that calyceal synapses can transduce signals from HCs to afferents via nonquantal transmission, a mechanism proposed to be faster than conventional bouton synaptic tran

Bioelectric control of locomotor gaits in the walking ciliate Euplotes.

Diverse animal species exhibit highly stereotyped behavioral actions and locomotor sequences as they explore their natural environments. In many such cases, the neural basis of behavior is well established, where dedicated neural circuitry contributes to the initiation and regulation of certain response sequences. At the microscopic scale, single-celled eukaryotes (protists) also exhibit remarkably complex behaviors and yet are completely devoid of nervous systems. Here, to address the question of how single cells control behavior, we study locomotor patterning in the exemplary hypotrich cilia

Research on the safety risks of microwave irradiation on motion balance perception in electric power environments.

To the microwave irradiation safety hazards caused by the co-construction of towers in smart grids, this paper investigates the effects of microwave irradiation in the power environment on the biological motion balance perception function. Firstly, simulation of microwave signals in the electric power environment, i.e., low-frequency harmonics and high-frequency carriers, were realized by signal modulation and applied in four types of behavior testing scenarios. Then, determining rats as target organisms to replace workers and randomly dividing into groups in proportion: open field, rotating r

Influence of dual-task constraints on whole-body organization during walking in children who are overweight and obese.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the influence of dual-task constraints on movement and force control in children who are overweight and obese. DESIGN: Twelve children who are overweight and obese (4-12 yrs old) and 12 age-matched children with normal weight participated. The children walked along a path at a self-selected pace under two conditions: walking carrying nothing (baseline condition) and walking while carrying a box (dual-task condition). RESULTS: The overweight/obese group showed less normalized hand vertical motion and shoulder range of motion compared with the co

Computerized posturography balance assessment of patients with bilateral ventralis intermedius nuclei deep brain stimulation.

Bilateral ventralis intermedius nuclei (Vim) deep brain stimulation (DBS) improves tremor in patients with both essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD). In each condition, patients have individually noted both subjective improvement and worsening in balance. Computerized posturography (CP) is able to quantify some aspects of balance. Twenty-one patients (8 with PD and 13 with ET) with bilateral Vim DBS were recruited to undergo randomized-order identical CP testing (EquiTest system) while their DBS devices were both activated and deactivated. One PD patient could not complete any OF

Pelvic target volume inter-fractional motion during radiotherapy for cervical cancer with daily iterative cone beam computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Tumor regression and organ movements indicate that a large margin is used to ensure target volume coverage during radiotherapy. This study aimed to quantify inter-fractional movements of the uterus and cervix in patients with cervical cancer undergoing radiotherapy and to evaluate the clinical target volume (CTV) coverage. METHODS: This study analyzed 303 iterative cone beam computed tomography (iCBCT) scans from 15 cervical cancer patients undergoing external beam radiotherapy. CTVs of the uterus (CTV-U) and cervix (CTV-C) contours were delineated based on each iCBCT image. CTV-U

Supramolecular dye polymers for aggregation-induced photocatalysis.

Aggregation can profoundly alter the excited-state properties of organic chromophores; however, crystalline supramolecular polymers are often targeted for photocatalytic conversion of solar energy due to favourable charge delocalization or exciton transport. Here we exploit aggregation as a strategy for organic chromophore rigidification to activate photocatalysis by stabilizing localized excited states. Using amphiphilic distyrylanthracene derivatives, we show that aggregation in water enhances the availability of excited states, enabling light-driven transformations of solar energy into stor

Deep Neck Cellulitis, Myositis, and Reactive Lymphadenitis Secondary to Rothia dentocariosa in an Immunocompetent Female: A Case Report.

Rothia dentocariosa is a commensal organism that is typically found in the oropharyngeal and respiratory tracts, and it typically possesses a low virulence profile, especially for immunocompetent patients. The case presented here represents an extremely rare case of deep neck cellulitis, myositis, and reactive lymphadenitis secondary to R. dentocariosa in an immunocompetent female. A 35-year-old female with no significant past medical history presented to the emergency department with neck pain with reduced range of motion, fever, chills, sinus congestion, and headache for one day. After a tho

Retinotopy and functional subdivision of human areas MT and MST.

We performed a series of functional magnetic resonance imaging experiments to divide the human MT+ complex into subregions that may be identified as homologs to a pair of macaque motion-responsive visual areas: the middle temporal area (MT) and the medial superior temporal area (MST). Using stimuli designed to tease apart differences in retinotopic organization and receptive field size, we established a double dissociation between two distinct MT+ subregions in 8 of the 10 hemispheres studied. The first subregion exhibited retinotopic organization but did not respond to peripheral ipsilateral

Otolith functions in weightlessness.

The role of the vestibular organ in the exploration of space has been studied extensively during the past two decades. Many investigators have shown that some persons experience ill effects during the transition from the normal gravity to subgravity or weightlessness. Such adverse reactions can be related to a variety of sensory and somatic changes within the body systems; but it appears that the two major components of the unusual force field--namely, the absence of gravitational stimulation of the otolith organs and the occasional stimulation of the semicircular canals by head and body movem

Bacteria regulate collective behaviour by mechanosensing cell-cell collisions.

Dense bacterial populations often navigate complex and heterogeneous environments using collective behaviours including group motility. Whether local interactions within a population can regulate collective order is unclear. Here we show using live imaging, single-cell tracking and simulations that Pseudomonas aeruginosa regulates collective order by mechanosensing cell-cell collisions, enabling adaptive surface exploration. Collision-induced reversals suppress collective cell alignment in dense bacterial populations. While a non-reversing mutant remains locked in cohesive near-linear motion r

Towards biomimetic evolution of artificial intervertebral disc: a review.

In lumbar total disc replacement, artificial disc implants are utilized to cure degenerative disc disease and restore natural motion. Human intervertebral discs (IVD) are part of the spine and contribute to delivering six degrees of freedom, elastic deformation, and shock absorption and act differently under different load conditions. Despite advancements in spinal fixation systems and IVD replacement techniques, achieving long-term segmental stability while preserving physiological motion remains a significant challenge. To overcome this issue, the proposed work aims to identify the biomechan

Treatment of Periprosthetic Knee Infection With a Two-stage Protocol Using Static Spacers.

BACKGROUND: Two-stage exchange arthroplasty is a standard approach for treating total knee arthroplasty periprosthetic joint infection in the United States, but whether this should be performed with a static antibiotic spacer or an articulating one that allows range of motion before reimplantation remains controversial. It is unclear if the advantages of articulating spacers (easier surgical exposure during reimplantation and improved postoperative flexion) outweigh the disadvantages of increased cost and complexity in the setting of similar rates of infection eradication. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES:
