PURPOSE: The surgical-orthodontic treatment of impacted maxillary canine (IMC) remains a challenge to today's clinicians. The aim of the present paper is to describe an unconventional treatment of IMC with insertion of implant into the retained canine and 3 years follow-up.
CASE REPORT: A 55-year-old female patient attended to rehabilitate her maxillary left canine site. An unconventional approach was proposed to the patient. A large diameter tapered implant (Ø 5 × 18 mm) was inserted (Nobel Active, Kolten, Swisse). An immediate loading prosthetic rehabilitation was performed. After checking

Different approaches have been proposed for the treatment of retained infra-occluded primary molars with agenesis of permanent successors including extraction with orthodontic space closure, prosthetic replacement, or retention of the primary tooth in situ for space maintenance. The retention of primary second molars in situ represents a conservative treatment option to preserve alveolar bone at the future implant site, and it is especially indicated for young patients who have not completed skeletal growth until later reassessment can determine definitive treatment. The orthodontist and the r

In bilateral cleft lip repair numerous complicated problems still remain. In our opinion, it is better to begin treatment soon after birth. We start nonsurgical correction of a nasal deformity using a nose retainer and preoperative orthodontics using a palatal plate. Surgical repair of the lip is done within one month of birth, by which time the nose alveolus and projecting prolabium can be adequately changed into the desired form. Primary lip repair is performed in one stage which includes restoration of the muscle union, labial sulcus reconstruction and nasal correction. We use a two straigh

Fracture of surgical instruments in dental practice is not usually reported in the literature. Management involves searching for and retrieving the fragment to avoid issues such as infection, swallowing, or aspiration. Although foreign bodies may not cause symptoms for years, some can cause chronic pain. The authors describe herein the unusual case of an unintentionally retained broken elevator blade left for 8 years before being found during an orthodontic evaluation. Panoramic radiography revealed a foreign body in the alveolar bone of the right mandibular third molar that was causing mild c

Premolars rank third in frequency after third molars and maxillary canines in impacted or unerupted teeth. Failure to detect and analyze the problem may lead to unnecessary space loss, crowding, or collapse of the dental arch. A diagnostic scheme is presented to facilitate diagnosing and treating unerupted premolars. Important observations include: Diagnosing congenitally missing permanent teeth. Whether the condition is generalized or localized. Whether the succedaneous tooth has a viable form, eruptive potential, and viable orientation Whether the delayed eruption is due to over-retained pri

In a retrospective study of 63 patients, an attempt is made to determine in how many cases retained permanent upper incisors erupt after the removal of supernumerary teeth, and what predisposing and etiological factors are of importance. It proved that the eruption of a supernumerary tooth positively contributed to the chance of a spontaneous eruption of the permanent incisors. No relationship could be demonstrated between the age of a patient from whom supernumeraries were extracted, the number of supernumeraries, the extent of root formation, marked apical displacement and the chance of spon

Panoramic radiography is frequently performed for new patients, follow-ups and treatment in progress. This enables dental clinicians to detect pathology, view important structures, and assess developing teeth. The objective of the study was to determine prevalence of incidental pathologic findings (IPFs) from orthodontic pretreatment panoramic radiographs at a university dental hospital. A retrospective cross-sectional review was conducted of pretreatment panoramic radiographs, using data collection sheets with predefined criteria. Demographic data and abnormalities (impacted teeth, widening o

AIM AND OBJECTIVE: The respective review article is to provide an overview of the various exercises in orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) as a treatment modality for tongue thrust habit. Tongue thrust is the persistence of an infantile swallow pattern during late childhood. This leads to breathing and speech difficulties, open bite, and protruded teeth. During formative years, most children successfully transition from an infantile to a mature swallowing pattern. However, a few develop a retained infantile swallow and tongue thrust habit which could be due to abnormal habit like thumb sucki

BACKGROUND: Severe hypodontia is a condition characterized by developmental absence of six or more teeth and affects 0.14-0.3% of the overall population. Hypodontia can have a marked psychosocial effect and functional implications for a growing child.
CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old girl with a medical history of hypothyroidism and repaired spinal bifida was referred to the Leeds Dental Institute as she was becoming increasingly concerned about her appearance. On clinical examination, the patient had severe wear of her over-retained maxillary primary central incisors, microdontia of mandibular ant

SUMMARY A recent systematic review demonstrated that, overall, orthodontic treatment might result in a small worsening of periodontal status. The aim of this retrospective study was to test the hypothesis that a change of mandibular incisor inclination promotes development of labial gingival recessions. One hundred and seventy-nine subjects who met the following inclusion criteria were selected: age 11-14 years at start of orthodontic treatment (TS), bonded retainer placed immediately after treatment (T₀), dental casts and lateral cephalograms available pre-treatment (TS), post-treatment (T₀),

BACKGROUND: Severe alveolar ridge defects in the mandibular anterior region, often associated with congenital tooth absence and subsequent loss of retained primary teeth, present significant challenges for implant rehabilitation. Limited space, horizontal ridge deficiency, and complex site anatomy often require a multidisciplinary approach to achieve stable hard- and soft-tissue outcomes.
METHODS: A 30-year-old woman presented with absence of teeth #23 and #25, distal rotation of tooth #24, and insufficient mesiodistal space for implant placement. After 15 months of orthodontic space creation

INTRODUCTION: Anterior open bite (AOB) continues to be a challenging malocclusion for orthodontists to treat and retain long-term. There is no consensus on which treatment modality is most successful. This study reports on the overall success rate of AOB orthodontic treatment in the adult population across the United States, as well as 4 major treatment modalities and other factors that may influence treatment success.
METHODS: Practitioners and their adult patients with AOB were recruited through the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network. Patient dentofacial and demographic charact

INTRODUCTION: A prerequisite for development of gingival recession is the presence of alveolar bone dehiscence. Proclination of mandibular incisors can result in thinning of the alveolus and dehiscence formation.
OBJECTIVE: To assess an association between proclination of mandibular incisor and development of gingival recession.
METHODS: One hundred and seventeen subjects who met the following inclusion criteria were selected: 1. age 11-14 years at start of orthodontic treatment (TS), 2. bonded retainer placed immediately after treatment (T0), 3. dental casts and lateral cephalograms availab

INTRODUCTION: Our aims were to evaluate long-term maxillary arch width changes in orthodontic patients treated with and without premolar extractions and to provide a potential link to the buccal-corridor ratios.
METHODS: Dental casts of 34 extraction and 32 nonextraction orthodontic patients with Class I malocclusions were digitized and evaluated before treatment (T1), at posttreatment (T2), and at postretention (T3). The mean postretention times for the extraction and the nonextraction groups were 5 years 2 months and 4 years 10 months, respectively. Specific arch width measurements were mad

BACKGROUND: Replantation of avulsed teeth is an invasive treatment approach where patient cooperation is required after the risks are explained to the patient or family. Although replantation of an avulsed permanent teeth is an accepted treatment approach, the long-term prognosis of the replanted teeth is still controversial. This report describes the survival of delayed replanted 15 incisors that was stored in unfavorable conditions after avulsion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine patients, aged 8-12 years, were referred to the Inonu University, Pediatric Dentistry Department with traumatically a

Adult patients with oral manifestations of untreated syndromic malformations usually exhibit a high degree of suffering. In this clinical report, we describe the implant-supported prosthetic treatment of a patient with cleidocranial dysplasia, a rare autosomal-dominant inherited malformation syndrome. Therapy for oral manifestations of cleidocranial dysplasia should be started in early childhood; however, the 26-year-old patient in the present study had not undergone orthodontic therapy in childhood. The treatment measures performed prior to this study were limited to the removal of several pe

Early loss of deciduous teeth is a challenging situation to handle. In recent years, the loss of deciduous teeth has become very frequent because of the increased risk of caries. Space maintainers play a vital role in preventing space loss. Lingual arch space maintainers are effectively used to maintain space in the lower arch. In order to retain the length of the lower arch and to prevent mesial migration of the mandibular first permanent molar, lingual arch space maintainers are often indicated. Conventional lingual arch fabrication is technique-sensitive and cumbersome. Additionally, it has

Recent advances in surgery and orthodontics have resulted in improvements in the management of patients with a cleft lip or palate. Early surgical intervention and bone-grafting procedures have frequently been used to ensure closure of the cleft and continuity of the alveolar bone. However, a need for the prosthodontic management of patients with a cleft palate still exists. Most frequently, the indication is to restore the edentulous spaces located anteriorly in the vicinity of the residual cleft defect. In addition to improving the esthetic outcome, prosthodontic management also is required
