CONCLUSION: Long-term hearing gain results are good after prosthetic reconstruction of the stapes in the tympanosclerotic ear. The type of stapedectomy, whether partial or total, does not affect the result of the surgery very much.
OBJECTIVES: Comparative evaluation of the hearing results of total/partial stapedectomy technique and the prosthesis used within a 10-year follow-up period after stapedectomy in cases with dense tympanosclerosis and completely fixed stapes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five cases with completely fixed stapes due to generalized tympanosclerosis were included in thi

Active auditory implants, such as the Maxum, provide significantly improved hearing function compared to hearing aids in patients with moderate to severe hearing loss who are not reaching their cochlear hearing potential. The speech perception gap (SPG), defined as PB Max (phonetically balanced maximum) minus word recognition score with hearing aid, is a useful measure of inadequate hearing aid performance. The Maxum middle ear implant provides significantly improved performance over hearing aids in patients with significant SPG because of superior high frequency gain. Patients with PB Max 60%

The direct hearing device (DHD) is a new auditory prosthesis that combines conventional hearing aid and middle ear implant technologies into a single device. The DHD is located deep in the ear canal and recreates sounds with mechanical movements of the tympanic membrane. A critical component of the DHD is the microactuator, which must be capable of moving the tympanic membrane at frequencies and magnitudes appropriate for normal hearing, with little distortion. The DHD actuator reported here utilized a voice coil actuator design and was 3.7 mm in diameter. The device has a smoothly varying fre

Subtotal petrosectomy may be performed for refractory chronic middle ear diseases, such as massive cholesteatoma or recurrent otitis media. It involves permanent obliteration of the operative cavity, thus precluding the chance to restore conductive hearing via traditional inertial ossicular prostheses. The Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) is an alternative option for hearing rehabilitation. Vibrant energy is delivered into the inner ear via a floating mass transducer (FMT), which can be coupled with any part of the middle ear acoustic transmission structure. To restore the hearing of a young woman wi

Tympanoplasty is often a necessary part of middle-ear surgery, the most common defect being that between an intact, mobile stapes and the malleus handle. The most readily available tissue is the patient's incus, reshaped to bridge the space between an intact stapes and the malleus. When the incus cannot be used, the hydroxyapatite Wehrs incus prosthesis can be used as an alternative.Twenty-six patients had an autograft incus ossiculoplasty and 20 patients underwent modified Wehrs incus prosthesis ossiculoplasty. The average post-operative air-bone gaps (ABGs) were 16.2 dB hearing loss (dBHL) a

OBJECTIVES: Tinnitus is a very common symptom in patients with hearing loss. Several studies have confirmed that hearing restoration using hearing aids or cochlear implants (CIs) has a suppressive effect on tinnitus in users. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of other hearing restoration devices, specifically the middle ear implant (MEI), on changes in tinnitus severity.
DESIGN: From 2012 to October 2014, 11 adults with tinnitus and hearing loss underwent MEI surgery. Pure-tone audiometry, tinnitus handicap inventory (THI), and visual analog scale scores for loudness, awareness,

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to verify the role of "planned two-stage surgery" in the management of advanced congenital cholesteatoma regarding disease recurrence rates, complications and the need for salvage surgery.
METHOD: Retrospective review of all congenital cholesteatoma under the age of 18 years underwent surgery from October 2007 to December 2021 in a single tertiary referral center. Patients with Potsic stage I/II who had closed-type congenital cholesteatoma received one-stage surgery. Advanced cases or those with open-type infiltrative congenital cholesteatomas underwent

HYPOTHESIS: To mechanically stimulate the round window (RW) membrane, an actuator with an interface coupler (IC) has the potential to improve sound transmission to the cochlea as compared to the most used RW stimulation device implanted today. If a proof-of-concept IC prototype shows promise as compared the most common method for RW stimulation, there is potential that future design development of an IC will be worthwhile.
BACKGROUND: A variety of hearing pathologies resulting in mixed and conductive hearing loss can be addressed by mechanically stimulating the RW to transmit sound to the coc

OBJECTIVES: In patients with chronic middle ear disease, especially after revision surgery for ventilation problems and mixed hearing loss, active middle ear implants may provide an alternative treatment option. The fully implantable active middle-ear implant (FI-AMEI) is designed for implantation in a ventilated mastoid with an intact posterior canal wall. Until now, there have been no reports on audiometric results after implantation of a FI-AMEI in a fat-obliterated cavity after subtotal petrosectomy (SPE).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.

Introduction: For many years, surgical treatment of otosclerosis has been a widely accepted approach. Hearing improvement following stapes surgery is sometimes spectacular, and good treatment results are obtained in many centers in over 90% of patients. However, in the subsequent years after the treatment, some patients develop permanent or progressive conductive hearing loss.
Aim: The aim of the study is to present a group of patients with conductive hearing loss after the first otosclerosis surgery and to analyze the causes of its occurrence. &
