BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of osseous tissue outside the skeleton. HO in malignant tumors of the digestive tract is extremely rare, as is ossification in metastatic lesions from HO-negative digestive tract tumors. Regarding the pathogenesis of HO, two theories have been proposed. The first is that the osteoblastic metaplasia of tumor cells (driven by the epithelial-mesenchymal transition, EMT) results in HO, and the second is that factors secreted by cancer cells lead to the metaplasia of stromal pluripotent cells into osteoblasts. However, the osteogenic mechan

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a debilitating disease characterized by extraskeletal bone formation. Active TGF-β recruits mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), which contribute to trauma-induced HO. Inhibiting TGF-β induced MSC migration and osteogenic differentiation could be a promising treatment for HO. Matrine is an alkaloid from the genus Sophora that can suppress pancreatic and hepatic fibrosis by regulating TGF-β/Smad signaling. We conducted this study to evaluate the effects of matrine on HO and explore the mechanisms, we carried out this study.

The incidence of heterotopic ossification in adolescents appears to be lower than in adults. There exist very few reports of heterotopic ossification with total bony ankylosis in child or adolescent populations. We describe a case of total bony ankylosis of the elbow secondary to heterotopic ossification, in a 14-year-old female. Total ankylosis of the elbow at 45 degrees of flexion was noted 6 months post-surgery, and complete surgical excision of the heterotopic mass was performed. After an additional one-time dose of radiation therapy and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug medication, full

INTRODUCTION: The incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) is at its highest when trauma of the hip or pelvis concurs with traumatic brain injury (TBI). The pathogenic mechanisms underlying the neurogenic enhancement of the formation of HO remain, however, poorly understood. Hence, the goal of the present study was to develop a novel small animal model that combines hip and brain trauma that can prove the enhancement of HO around the hip after TBI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty male Wistar rats were divided into four groups, to undergo hip surgery alone (group 1), hip surgery + moderate TBI

BACKGROUND: Cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) is an alternative treatment to traditional interbody fusion that maintains postoperative cervical spine mobility. However, the CDA postoperative period is impacted by osteolysis, subsidence, metallosis, or heterotopic ossification (HO). We report a case of severe HO in a seronegative spondyloarthritis patient after cervical Bryan disc arthroplasty.
CASE SUMMARY: A 34-year-old man received hybrid surgery for C4-C5 and C5-C6 arthroplasty with Bryan discs and C6-C7 arthrodesis with polyetheretherketone cage due to traumatic herniation of the intervert

Heterotopic ossification (HO) develops in the extremities of wounded service members and is common in the setting of high-energy penetrating injuries and blast-related amputations. No safe and effective prophylaxis modality has been identified for this patient population. Palovarotene has been shown to reduce bone formation in traumatic and genetic models of HO. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Palovarotene on inflammation, progenitor cell proliferation, and gene expression following a blast-related amputation in a rodent model (n = 72 animals), as well as the ability

OBJECTIVE: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a well-known complication after total hip replacement. But the occurrence rate by the time-course, clinical effect and risk factors of HO after total cervical disc replacement (TCDR) are not well described. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the occurrence rate by the time-course and risk factors for HO after TCDR with a ProDisc-C.
METHODS: Thirty-two patients whom followed up more than one year after the TCDR are enrolled. Radiographic study was done at 12, 24 and 36 months after the TCDR and classified HO with McAfee classification. Segmenta

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic neglected dislocations of hip in children are rare entity. Neglected traumatic dislocations of hip in children along with heterotopic ossification are still rare. Post traumatic neglected hip dislocations are to be diagnosed as early as possible and have to be treated with precision and aggression as the outcome of treatment for the same is not predictable.
CASE REPORT: 5 year female with post-traumatic neglected hip dislocation with heterotopic ossification forming a pseudoacetabulum postero-superiorly in which femur head was lodged. The girl was operated by open redu

This article describes a case of a 21-year old man who presented with symptomatic heterotopic ossification of the patellar tendon 3.5 years postinjury. The patient sustained an open tibia fracture during a fall and was treated by reamed intramedullary nailing through a medial paratendinous approach. Radiographic evidence of heterotopic ossification in the patellar tendon was first noted at the 4-week follow-up. He presented at 3.5 years postinjury with new-onset anterior knee pain and reported no interval trauma to the knee. Radiographs revealed a well-circumscribed area of calcification withi

Calcification is a rarely reported cause for chronic, cutaneous ulceration. Although dystrophic calcification occurs in chronic ulcers, idiopathic calcification and ossification leading to recurrent ulcerations is seldom reported. This report illustrates a challenging case with various non healing wounds, calcification/ossification and calcified fibrous tumours. A 56-year-old woman presented with chronic, painful wounds and calcified deposits in her feet, hands and abdomen, some dating back to childhood. The surgeries she had had for various unrelated conditions healed with hard, calcified dep

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a frequent complication following spinal cord injury (SCI), yet evidence regarding the efficacy of bisphosphonates in managing this condition remains limited. This systematic review aims to evaluate the role of bisphosphonates in the prevention and treatment of HO in patients with SCI. A comprehensive search of PubMed, CINAHL, ScienceDirect, Cochrane Library, and the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination databases was conducted to identify studies meeting predefined inclusion criteria. Relevant articles were also identified through bibliographic references. A to

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a rare complication that may be initially discovered in the acute inpatient rehabilitation setting, caused by the abnormal formation of bone tissue in non-skeletal areas of the body. It may be caused by trauma or a neurological injury. When treating a patient with a history of neurological disease complicated by an acute event, treatment should be tailored to suit the patient's needs and to avoid further harm. This case explores the complexity of HO in a patient diagnosed with cerebral amyloid angiopathy following an intraparenchymal hemorrhage (IPH) and highli

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification is a complication in the late stage of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and involves abnormal osteogenesis by mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). Research activity in this area has been rapidly expanding, but there is a lack of bibliometric studies that summarize the progresses.
METHODS: We searched the Web of Science (WoS) for articles pertaining to the role of MSCs in heterotopic ossification in AS from the database inception to December 2022 and visualized the countries, authors, institutions, references, and keywords using CiteSpace 6.1.R6 and VOSViewer.

PURPOSE: Although cervical total disc replacement (CTDR) is perceived as a safe procedure, no review to date has quantified the complication rates. Of note, heterotopic ossification (HO), one of the complications of CTDR, is hypothesised to cause adjacent segment degeneration (ASDegeneration). This association has not been proven in meta-analysis. Hence, this systematic review and meta-analysis aims to investigate the pooled prevalence of complications following CTDR among studies that concomitantly reported the rate of HO, and the associations between HO and other complications, including ASD

Heterotopic ossification has been described in papillary thyroid carcinoma in association with high incidence of extrathyroidal invasion, multifocality, lymph node metastasis, and older age. Nevertheless, it has not been described as a specific subtype of papillary thyroid carcinoma, because of its rarity. We described the case of an 80-year-old female patient, with familial history of papillary thyroid carcinoma. In the annual screening examination, she was diagnosed with thyroid nodules. The patient was submitted to a thyroidectomy because the fine needle aspiration cytology was positive for

BACKGROUND: Although use of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs and low-dose irradiation has demonstrated efficacy in preventing heterotopic ossification (HO) after THA and surgical treatment of acetabular fractures, these modalities have not been assessed after traumatic blast amputations where HO is a common complication that can arise in the residual limb.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of indomethacin and irradiation in preventing HO induced by high-energy blast trauma in a rat model.
METHODS: Thirty-six Sprague-Dawley rats underwent hi
