[Comparative study of sympathetic and parasympathetic discharges in the autonomic nerves during stimulation of different structures of the cat hypothalamus].

Simultaneous recordings of hypothalamo-parasympathetic and hypothalamo-sympathetic evoked discharges in anesthetized cats demonstrated that both parasympathetic discharges in the pelvic nerve and sympathetic discharges in the splanchnic nerve of the lowest threshold and shortest latency could be obtained from stimulation of the posterior hypothalamus. The focus of the maximal neuronal activated elicited by stimulation of afferent fibres of visceral nerves and the focus evoking maximal efferent reactions of parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves were located in the same region of the postero-la

Sympathectomy in the treatment of angina and arrhythmias.

Sympathectomy has been used as treatment for several different cardiac conditions. These include classic angina pectoris, Prinzmetal's angina, paroxysmal atrial tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, and long QT syndrome. To understand the rationale of such treatment, the innervation of the human heart is reviewed with discussion of the cardiac plexus and coronary innervation. Results in published studies are summarized and discussed.

Quantitative evaluation of diabetic autonomic neuropathy by using heart rate variations: relationship between cardiac parasympathetic or sympathetic damage and clinical conditions.

It was previously suggested that respiratory heart rate (HR) variations were predominantly affected by the parasympathetic nerve and HR increase to standing was predominantly affected by the sympathetic nerve. To compare parasympathetic and sympathetic nerve function in diabetics, these two tests were performed in 95 diabetics and 38 controls by use of an instantaneous-HR-change continuous recorder. All subjects were between 40 and 59 years-old. As indices of autonomic nerve function, the mean difference between maximal and minimal HR during deep breathing (delta I-E) and the HR increase on st

Vasomotor rhinitis.

Vasomotor rhinitis is a nonallergic, noninfectious cause of nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea. The etiology is believed to be an imbalance of the autonomic neural supply to the nasal mucosa with resultant vasodilation and hypersecretion. Management hinges on identification of a treatable diagnostic entity, such as rhinitis medicamentosa or allergic rhinitis. Psychotherapy, medical therapy, and surgery all have roles in the treatment of vasomotor rhinitis. Response to therapy is often disappointing.

Pancreatic polypeptide: a unique model for vagal control of endocrine systems.

Pancreatic polypeptide (PP) is a hormone synthesized only in the duodenal pancreas where the PP cell is the dominating endocrine cell type. The secretion of PP is regulated by food-intake and by plasma glucose--in both cases through vagal cholinergic mechanisms. In vitro cholinergic stimulation is 4-10 times as potent as any other stimulatory mechanism, e.g. beta-adrenergic stimulation. Although other agents such as gastrointestinal hormones and neuropeptides are potent stimulators of PP secretion in vivo, their action is totally eliminated by blockade of the muscarinic receptor and in several

[Heat-induced salivary gland hypertrophy: change during chronic heat exposure (34 degrees C). (author's transl)].

1 A slight rise in ambient temperature (34 degrees C) increased saliva secretion in the rat and this was accompanied by licking behavior, thus increasing heat loss by evaporation. 2 The rise in ambient temperature was accompanied by a hypertrophy of the submaxillary glands (Fig.1, 2), arising from activation of seromucous acini (Fig. 4, 5). 3 The hypertrophy reached a maximum after 2 to 4 days of heat exposure (Fig. 2); it was followed by a slow decrease. Normal values were obtained only after at least 3 weeks in the climatic chamber (Fig. 2, 3), which agreed with behavioral observations. Incr

The autonomic nervous system: A potential link to the efficacy of acupuncture.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a diffuse network that regulates physiological systems to maintain body homeostasis by integrating inputs from the internal and external environment, including the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric nervous systems (ENS). Recent evidence suggests that ANS is one of the key neural pathways for acupuncture signal transduction, which has attracted worldwide attention in the acupuncture field. Here, we reviewed the basic and clinical research published in PubMed over the past 20 years on the effects of acupuncture on ANS regulation and homeostasis maint

Cross-Sectional Study Evaluating the Role of Autonomic Nervous System Functional Diagnostics in Differentiating Post-Infectious Syndromes: Post-COVID Syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Lyme Disease.

Background/Objectives: Post-infectious syndromes, including Post-COVID syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and late-stage Lyme disease, are associated with overlapping clinical features and autonomic dysfunction. Despite shared symptoms such as fatigue and orthostatic intolerance, the underlying pathophysiology and specific patterns of autonomic dysfunction may differ. This study aimed to evaluate and compare autonomic nervous system function in these syndromes using multiple diagnostic modalities to identify unique characteristics and improve differentiation between these conditions. Methods:

Vascular dysfunctions following spinal cord injury.

The aim of this article is to analyze the vascular dysfunctions occurring after spinal cord injury (SCI). Vascular dysfunctions are common complications of SCI. Cardiovascular disturbances are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in both acute and chronic stages of SCI. Neuroanatomy and physiology of autonomic nervous system, sympathetic and parasympathetic, is reviewed. SCI implies disruption of descendent pathways from central centers to spinal sympathetic neurons, originating in intermediolateral nuclei of T1-L2 cord segments. Loss of supraspinal control over sympathetic nervous sy

Effect of sympathetic innervation on isoproterenol-induced cystatin S gene expression in rat submandibular glands during early development.

The rat submandibular gland is innervated by both sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system which, in turn, regulate the secretory function of the gland. Parasympathetic innervation of rat submandibular glands is present at birth; in contrast, sympathetic innervation reaches the glands by postnatal day 5. Isoproterenol (IPR), a beta-adrenoreceptor agonist, induces hypertrophic and hyperplastic enlargement of rat salivary glands, and induces the expression of a number of genes, including cystatin S (Cys S), a member of family 2 of the cysteine proteinase inhibitor

[The central nervous system-endocrine pancreas axis].

Some results suggesting the existence of gluco- and/or insulin-sensitive sites within the central nervous system (CNS) are recalled. In summary, it seems that when these sites are activated by the presence of glucose or insulin, there is an activation of the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for an increased peripheral insulin secretion and/or an hypoglycemia. This could possibly favour glucose disposal. Inversely, when the CNS lacks energy substrates, a cascade of events occurs which tend to increase peripheral glycemia. Bilateral lesions of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VM…

Interacting influences of gender and chronic pain status on parasympathetically mediated heart rate variability in adolescents and young adults.

Considerable research links chronic pain to autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction, specifically low heart rate variability (HRV) mediated by reduced parasympathetic activity. However, little is known about factors that influence ANS function in chronic pain. The ANS is the primary pathway for brain-gut communication, making it of particular interest in gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, characterized by functional abdominal pain (FAP). We evaluated the relation of sex, pain severity, and psychological stress to ANS function in adolescents/young adults from a dat

The Effects of a Single Vagus Nerve's Neurodynamics on Heart Rate Variability in Chronic Stress: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The modulation of the autonomic nervous system's activity, particularly increasing its parasympathetic tone, is of significant interest in clinical physiotherapy due to its potential benefits for stress-related conditions and recovery processes. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the addition of neurodynamics in enhancing parasympathetic activation in subjects with chronic stress. METHODS: A clinical trial randomly assigned participants to a group with neurodynamics (6 bpm breathing protocol + manual therapy + neurodynamic technique) or a group without neurodynamics (6 bpm

Effect of excessive infant crying on resting BP, HRV and cardiac autonomic control in childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Early life stress has been shown to influence the developing autonomic nervous system. Stressors in infancy may program the autonomic nervous system resting state set point, affecting cardiovascular function in later life. Excessive crying may be an indicator of increased stress arousal in infancy. We hypothesized that excessive infant crying is related to altered cardiac autonomic nervous system activity and increased blood pressure at age 5-6 years. METHODS: In the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development study, excessive crying, maternal burden of infant care and maternal a

Chemodectoma is exceptionally rarely tumor comes from the parasympathetic part of nervous system. Cases description first of all concern multiple, single tumors localized on the neck, occasionally somewhere else. Tumors expansion in internal carotid vein aperture or in ear provoke serious complications from cranial nerves paralysis to cerebellum lesion. In this paper authors present a case of bilateral chemodectoma. Surgical treatment has required--not only simple tumor excision but also internal carotid artery reimplantation.

Inhibition of pseudocholinesterase activity in a 20-year-old gelding.

A 20-year-old Arab crossbred gelding was examined because it had apparently suffered an overstimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system for three hours. The clinical signs consisted of hypersalivation, profuse sweating, maximal miosis, fasciculation of the muscles and lateral recumbency in combination with continuous convulsions without diarrhoea. The horse's plasma pseudocholinesterase activity was approximately 10 per cent of normal. It responded well to 10 mg atropine and 50 mg diazepam administered intravenously.

[Characteristics of autonomic dystonia in children with vasomotor rhinitis].

Data obtained at analysis of tables of screening diagnosis, cardiointervalograms, tilt tests used in examination of 57 children with neurovegetative vasomotor rhinitis point to disorders in the autonomic nervous system (by initial vegetative tone), vegetative reactivity. Parasympathetic prevalence in the initial vegetative tone and cardiointervalograms stems from sympathetic hypoactivity in the majority of the patients. The above vegetative shifts dictate the necessity of vegetotropic medication inclusion into combined therapy of vasomotor rhinitis.

Severe orthostatic hypotension in a female carrier of Fabry's disease.

A 21-year-old woman in a family with a history of Fabry's disease showed orthostatic hypotension and whorl-like corneal opacity typical for Fabry's disease. Biochemical studies revealed that she was a heterozygote of the Fabry gene. A variety of autonomic function tests demonstrated both sympathetic and parasympathetic dysfunction. To our knowledge, the present case is the first report of a heterozygous female carrier of Fabry's disease presenting dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system.

Sleep-apnoea and autonomic dysfunction: a cardiopressor and pupillometric study.

Isolated alterations in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) have been described in obstructive sleep-apnea syndrome (OSAS), but the exact nature and degree of ANS involvement in OSAS is as yet uncharted. In the present study we evaluated some autonomic nervous functions in 13 OSAS patients using cardiopressor and pupillometric tests. Almost all showed only slight alterations of ANS function, generally in the form of a hypofunction of both sympathetic and parasympathetic branches. Pupillometry was more sensitive than cardiovascular indexes in detecting neurovegetative involvement which correlate
