Ingrown Toenails During Chemotherapy and Stem Cell Transplantation in Children With Hematologic Malignancies and Solid Tumors.

BACKGROUND: At our institution, we noted that children with hematologic malignancies and solid tumors often suffered from ingrown toenails ( … d solid tumors in 33 patients. RESULTS: A total of 22 patients (13.7%) suffered from IGTNs (or toe paronychia) during hospitalization. Multivariable analysis disclosed a strong correlation between the occurrence of IGTNs and older age (over 9.0 y) and ALL. CONCLUSIONS: Patient-related factors, such as age over 9 years and ALL were associated with IGTNs. Th …

Management and Outcome of Taxane-Induced Nail Side Effects: Experience of 79 Patients from a Single Centre.

BACKGROUND: Nail changes are a common side effect of taxane chemotherapy, although their correct management is poorly standardized. OBJECTI … s seen in 63.3% of the patients, including painful subungual hematoma, hemorrhagic onycholysis, and paronychia. Grade 3 nail toxicity was seen only in 2.5% of the patients, including hemorrhagic onycholysis and pyogenic granuloma. Microbiological analysis of acute infections of the nail fold on the basis of bait thread test.

INTRODUCTION: An acute infection of the nail fold, called paronychia, is a common clinical problem. The basis for the implementation of the treatment is the result of microbiological examination. Due to the rapid and painful course of infection, usually an empirical antimicrobial treatment prior to obtaining microbiological test results is introduced. AIM: The microbial analysis of acute infections of the nail fold. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 32 tests conducted on 31 patients of the Department of Dermatology. Microbiological analysis was performed with the use of the so-called …

Appearance-related side effects of HIV-1 treatment.

In the early years of the AIDS epidemic, HIV infection was associated with visible signs and symptoms, adding to the stigma associated with … side effects. Patients may develop changes in fat distribution, rashes, skin hyperpigmentation, or paronychia. These effects not only have cosmetic and psychological consequences but also may decrease adherence to therapy, potentially causing regimen failure and drug resistance. Newer antiretroviral agents offer improved potency, more convenient dosing, and …

Malassezia furfur in a case of onychomycosis: colonizer or etiologic agent?

The etiologic role of Malassezia furfur in onychomycosis is a contentious diagnostic problem because its keratinolytic ability has never been verified. This case report describes the isolation of M. furfur from the infected nails of a child clinically diagnosed with onychomycosis, and discusses the role of this organism as an etiologic agent/colonizer. The patient presented with subungual hyperkeratosis and onycholysis without associated paronychia. Budding yeast cells compatible with M. furfur were repeatedly demonstrated in KOH wet mounts of damaged nails, histopathology of hematoxylin and e…

Common acute hand infections.

Hand infections can result in significant morbidity if not appropriately diagnosed and treated. Host factors, location, and circumstances of the infection are important guides to initial treatment strategies. Many hand infections improve with early splinting, elevation, appropriate antibiotics and, if an abscess is present, incision and drainage. Tetanus prophylaxis is indicated in patients who have at-risk infections. Paronychia, an infection of the epidermis bordering the nail, commonly is precipitated by localized trauma. Treatment consists of incision and drainage, warm-water soaks and, so…

Fulminant streptococcal toxic shock syndrome.

We present a case of a previously healthy 37-year-old male who developed fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and hypovolaemia. Within 5.5 h he presented with tachycardia, tachypnoea, became hypotensive and displayed a diffuse erythematous rash. In the following hours he developed persistent hypotension, acute respiratory distress syndrome, liver failure, kidney failure and disseminated intravascular coagulation. A diagnosis of toxic shock syndrome was made, but despite antibiotic therapy, immunoglobulin administration, and supportive measures, the patient died 50 h after presentation. Streptoc

BACKGROUND: Onychocryptosis is one of the most common painful nail conditions. Conservative treatment may take a long time to obtain effective results. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to show the effectiveness of a conservative treatment of ingrown nails that shows rapid results. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with painful Stage 1 to 2 onychocryptosis who were not candidates or refused surgery were treated with the cotton cast. The severity and cause of onychocryptosis was clinically evaluated during a 2-month period. A questionnaire was applied to all patients to evaluate pain, fin

[Surgical managing of current cutaneous infections in children].

The cutaneous infectious pathology of the child is varied and frequent. Authors deal with surgical infections seen in current pediatrics, which often have to appeal to a plastic pediatric surgeon for their treatment. Superficial infections of skin and pilo-sebaceous follicles are common in big children. The folliculitis and the boil are the most frequent. Their treatment is medical and surgical and does not require an antibiotic treatment in most of the cases. The primitive abscesses or following an anterior lesion recover from a similar treatment. Some localizations or risky context need a pa

Surveillance of noninvasive group A Streptococcus infections in French ambulatory pediatrics before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: a prospective multicenter study from 2018-2022.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the burden of noninvasive group A Streptococcus (GAS) infections in ambulatory pediatrics before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in France. METHODS: We analyzed data from a national network of ambulatory pediatricians between 2018 and 2022. Clinicians evaluating children ≤15 years old for tonsillopharyngitis, perianal infections, paronychia/blistering dactylitis, and scarlet fever were invited to perform a rapid antigen detection test (RADT) for GAS. Monthly incidence of noninvasive GAS infections per 10,000 visits was modeled using time series analysis, considering …
