Visual acuity for gratings was studied in 18 infants and children with generalized retinal degenerations using preferential looking (PL) procedures. Diagnoses were Leber's congenital amaurosis (12), Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl-like syndromes (4) and metabolic disorders (2). PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of intravitreal injection of bevacizumab as a treatment option for radiation maculopathy secondary to plaque radiotherapy.
METHODS: Interventional case series of five patients who developed radiation maculopathy complicating plaque radiotherapy with ruthenium 106 for choroidal melanoma. One to two intravitreal injections of bevacizumab (0.5 mL) were given, with an interval of 4 weeks between each injection. Twenty-eight patients with pseudotumor cerebri underwent 40 optic nerve sheath fenestrations for relief of visual loss or to preserve vision. Twenty women and eight men underwent 16 unilateral fenestrations and 12 bilateral operations. Papilledema disappeared or was strikingly reduced in 24 of 28 patients. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a patient with the genetic diagnosis of Alagille Syndrome, who has attended our hospital since 1992, and has shown a progressive bilateral chorioretinopathy with severe deterioration in visual acuity.
DISCUSSION: Ocular abnormalities associated with Alagille Syndrome are variable and can affect most ocular structures. Although severe visual threat or progressive ocular disease associated with Alagille syndrome have not yet been described, our patient has shown a marked decrease in visual acuity and a clear progression of the chorioretinal atrophy.
