Pectoralis minor syndrome.

Pectoralis minor syndrome (PMS) is defined as compression of the brachial plexus (BP) nerves, axillary artery, and axillary vein under the pectoralis minor muscle. The symptoms of PMS resemble supraclavicular compression of the neurovascular bundle, with shoulder, neck, chest, and arm pain, and paresthesia and weakness in the arm and hand. The diagnosis of PMS can be confused with other upper extremity pain syndromes. A detailed history, including occupation, daily activities, sports, and trauma, is critical in the diagnosis, together with physical examination findings. Radiological examinatio

Pectoralis major inverse plasty for functional reconstruction in patients with anterolateral deltoid deficiency.

After establishing anatomical feasibility, functional reconstruction to replace the anterolateral part of the deltoid was performed in 20 consecutive patients with irreversible deltoid paralysis using the sternoclavicular portion of the pectoralis major muscle. The indication for reconstruction was deltoid deficiency combined with massive rotator cuff tear in 11 patients, brachial plexus palsy in seven, and an isolated axillary nerve lesion in two. All patients were followed clinically and radiologically for a mean of 70 months (24 to 125). The mean gender-adjusted Constant score increased fro

[A case of empyema with bronchopleural fistula associated with diabetes and renal failure treated utilizing omental and muscle flap].

The patient was a 75-year-old male who had a right empyema with bronchopleural fistula, which had developed after right upper lobectomy for pulmonary tuberculosis performed 18 years previously. He also had diabetes and renal dysfunction. The fistula failed to close 5 months after open drainage thoracotomy. Accordingly, closure was performed by the intrathoracic transposition of an omental and muscle flaps obtained from the right latissimus dorsi, pectoralis major, and pectoralis minor. At 70 days after the closure, the fistula reopened due to his poor nutritional state, but it closed again spo

Hepatic splenosis presenting as arterialised liver lesion in a patient with NASH.

BACKGROUND: The use of nonbiopsy diagnosis of wild-type transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTRwt-CA) has grown worldwide. However, in specific scenarios, a biopsy of the myocardium or involved tissues must be conducted to confirm deposition of amyloid transthyretin (ATTR). CASE REPORT: An 83-year-old woman was diagnosed with decompensated heart failure, sick sinus syndrome (SSS), and an atrial septal defect (ASD). Cardiac amyloidosis was also suspected. Technetium-99m-labelled pyrophosphate (Tc-99m-PYP) scintigraphy revealed that tracer uptake was greater in the right ventricular (RV) myocar

Comparison of Muscle Fiber and Meat Quality Characteristics in Different Japanese Quail Lines.

The aim of this study was to compare the growth performance, fiber characteristics of the pectoralis major muscle, and meat quality characteristics in the heavy weight (HW) and random bred control (RBC) quail lines and genders. The HW male exhibited more than two times greater body (245.7 vs 96.1 g, p<0.05) and pectoralis major muscle (PMW; 37.1 vs 11.1 g, p<0.05) weights compared to the RBC female. This growth performance in the HW line was associated with a greater muscle fiber area (1,502 vs 663.0 μm(2), p<0.001) compared to the RBC line. Greater muscle mass of the HW male was accompanied b

Strain differences and effects of different stocking densities during rearing on the musculoskeletal development of pullets.

There are few published studies on the effect of stocking density (SD) of pullets, particularly between different genetic lines. The objectives of this study were to determine if strain or SD affects musculoskeletal development of pullets and determine any impact on the productivity and keel bone health of adult hens. Lohmann Selected Leghorn Lite (LSL), Dekalb White (DW), and Lohmann Brown (LB) pullets were reared at 4 different SD (247 cm2/bird, 270 cm2/bird, 299 cm2/bird, and 335 cm2/bird) in large cages furnished with elevated perches and a platform. At 16 wk of age, the keel bone, the mus

Myxofibrosarcoma that Developed Rapidly in the Breast of an Elderly Man and Recurred Early after Surgery: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Myxofibrosarcoma is a rare disease occurring subcutaneously in the limbs. We report a case of a rapidly growing myxofibrosarcoma in the breast of an elderly man that recurred early after surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old man presented with a breast mass. Physical findings showed a large tumor in the right breast, and malignancy was suspected on ultrasonography. Computed tomography (CT) revealed tumor invasion into the pectoralis major and pectoralis minor muscles. Positron emission tomography/CT showed no abnormality in other organs. Needle biopsy results excluded breast c

Improved skin paddle survival in pectoralis major myocutaneous flap reconstruction of head and neck defects.

OBJECTIVE: To examine our outcomes with skin paddle survival using pectoralis myocutaneous flaps in reconstruction of the head and neck. The pectoralis major myocutaneous flap has been associated with a notable incidence of distal skin necrosis and flap loss. Our experience has been favorable compared with that reported in the literature. METHODS: Retrospective medical record review of 81 cases of pectoralis major muscle flap reconstruction performed in 78 patients from 1995 to 2008 using a flap harvest technique that is slightly different from the classic descriptions. Data were obtained reg

Congenital Malformations of the Reproductive Tract in a Patient with Poland Syndrome: Is There a Connection?

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome and Müllerian duct agenesis (Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser(MRKH)-like syndrome) are two rare congenital anomalies with unclear etiology. CASE REPORT: An 18-year-old female presented with hypoplasia of the left pectoralis muscles and subcutaneous tissue, hypoplasia of the left breast and nipple, and dextrocardia, typical in those with a severe form of Poland syndrome. She also showed aplasia of the vagina and uterus, bilateral ovarian agenesis, and hyperandrogenism, presenting as MRKH-like syndrome. CONCLUSION: It is plausible to assume that these two congenital a…

Peroneal muscular atrophy with Poland syndrome.

A 22-year-old male college student had a syndactyly between the second and third fingers of his left hand, which was congenitally small in size. His left pectoralis muscles were absent. He first walked at the age of 12 months, but soon developed difficulties in walking due to weakness of the legs. Atrophy and weakness of the legs aggravated gradually. He was diagnosed as having peroneal muscular atrophy and Poland syndrome, an association of which has not been reported before. A small number of similar cases of peroneal muscular atrophy with various skeletal abnormalities in the literature sug…

Innervation of the human sternoclavicular joint.

The sternoclavicular joint (SCJ) functions as the basal joint of the entire upper limb and must move in the proper pattern for normal scapular motion. Afferent sensations from joints, such as proprioception and pain sensation, are important for maintaining the proper motion and condition of joints. Detailed anatomical data are useful for discussing injuries or surgeries that impair the afferent nerve to the SCJ. Nerve branches to SCJs were examined on 12 sides, and the subclavian nerve was investigated on six sides to clarify whether it innervates this joint. On seven of the 12 sides, the SCJ

Breast Cancer in a Pectoralis Major Myocutaneous Flap Used for the Reconstruction of Tongue Cancer: A Case Report.

Breast cancers are the most common cancers in women. However, breast cancer occurring in a pectoralis major myocutaneous flap is extremely rare. This article describes a case of breast cancer occurring in such a flap used for reconstruction of the tongue in a 72-year-old woman. Follow-up computed tomogram depicted a slowly growing mass in the flap. Thirty-nine months postoperatively, a fine-needle aspiration biopsy specimen taken from the lesion suggested glandular carcinoma. The patient was diagnosed with breast cancer in the neck area of the flap and tumor excision was performed. Histologic

Multilayer imaging and compositional analysis of human male breast by laser reflectometry and Monte Carlo simulation.

The laser backscattering from biological tissues depends on their composition and blood flow. The onset of abnormalities in tissues is associated with the change in composition at a specific location which may affect laser backscattering. The objective of this work is to study the point-to-point compositional variation of male breast tissues as this site has been prone to cancer development. The normalized backscattered intensity (NBI) profiles at various locations of human chest region of five subjects by multi-probe laser reflectometer are obtained. Based on these data the images of tissue c
