Mind the Mood: Momentary Depression and Anxiety Moderate the Correspondence Between Subjective and Objective Cognitive Functioning in Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Subjective cognitive dysfunction (SCD) affects 55-75% of individuals with fibromyalgia (FM), but those reporting cognitive difficulties often lack corresponding objective deficits. Symptoms of depression and anxiety are prevalent in FM and may account for part of this discrepancy. This study was undertaken to investigate whether momentary (within-day, across 7 days) changes in mood moderate the relationship between within-the-moment SCD and mental processing speed performance. METHODS: A total of 50 individuals with FM (mean age 44.8 years, mean education 15.7 years, 88% female, 86

Psychologic well-being of surgery residents after inception of the 80-hour workweek: a multi-institutional study.

BACKGROUND: The 80-hour workweek was adopted by US residency programs on July 1, 2003. Our published data from the preceding year indicated significant impairment in psychologic well-being among surgery residents. The purpose of this study was to determine whether psychologic well-being and academic performance of surgery residents improved after inception of the 80-hour workweek. METHODS: A single-blinded survey of general surgery residents (n=130) across 4 US training programs was conducted after July 1, 2003, with the use of validated psychometric surveys (Symptom Checklist-90-R and Percei

Crocus sativus improves cognitive functions and reduces anxiety-like behavior in aged rats exposed to chronic cold temperature-induced stress.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic cold stress acts as an influential environmental stressor that disrupts neuro-behavioral functions, which include anxiety responses, cognitive performance, mood regulation, and stress susceptibility. In spite of the growing recognition of cold-induced neuropathology, effective therapeutic strategies remain limited. Crocus sativus (saffron) extract, and its principle bioactive constituents (crocin, crocetin, safranal) have emerged as effective neuroprotectants. They elicit potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and have beneficial effects on cognitive function

Serotonergic neurons in the median raphe nucleus regulate inhibitory avoidance but not escape behavior in the rat elevated T-maze test of anxiety.

RATIONALE: A wealth of evidence supports the involvement of the serotonergic neurons of the median raphe nucleus (MRN) in anxiety. However, it is presently unclear whether serotonergic pathways arising from this nucleus play distinguishing regulatory roles in defensive behaviors that have been associated with specific subtypes of anxiety disorders. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the role of the MRN serotonergic neurons in the regulation of two defensive behaviors, inhibitory avoidance and escape, which have been related, respectively, to generalized anxiety and panic disorders. METHODS: Male Wistar

Trichotillomania and co-occurring anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania appears to be a fairly common disorder, with high rates of co-occurring anxiety disorders. Many individuals with trichotillomania also report that pulling worsens during periods of increased anxiety. Even with these clinical links to anxiety, little research has explored whether trichotillomania with co-occurring anxiety is a meaningful subtype. METHODS: One hundred sixty-five adults with trichotillomania were examined on a variety of clinical measures including symptom severity, functioning, and comorbidity. Participants also underwent cognitive testing assessing

Test anxiety predictors inventory (tapi): development and initial validation of a predictor-oriented instrument for medical students.

BACKGROUND: Test anxiety (TA) is common among medical students and may adversely affect mental well-being and academic performance. However, existing instruments such as the Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI) predominantly quantify the severity and manifestations of anxiety (outcomes) rather than identifying modifiable, intervention-relevant antecedents (predictors). This study aimed to develop and validate the Test Anxiety Predictors Inventory (TAPI) to support concurrent identification of at-risk students and to inform domain-specific, targeted interventions in resource-constrained medical trainin

Cognitive Impairments in Fibromyalgia Syndrome: Associations With Positive and Negative Affect, Alexithymia, Pain Catastrophizing and Self-Esteem.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain accompanied by symptoms like depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance and fatigue. In addition, affected patients frequently report cognitive disruption such as forgetfulness, concentration difficulties or mental slowness. Though cognitive deficits in FMS have been confirmed in various studies, not much is known about the mechanisms involved in their origin. This study aimed to investigate the contribution of affect-related variables to cognitive impairments in FMS. For this purpose, 67 female FMS patients and 32

Inhibitory control in anxious and healthy adolescents is modulated by incentive and incidental affective stimuli.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are characterized by elevated, sustained responses to threat, that manifest as threat attention biases. Recent evidence also suggests exaggerated responses to incentives. How these characteristics influence cognitive control is under debate and is the focus of the present study. METHODS: Twenty-five healthy adolescents and 25 adolescents meeting DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder were compared on a task of response inhibition. Inhibitory control was assayed with an antisaccade task that included both incentive (monetary reward) and incidental emot

Trait anxiety mediates the link between inferior frontal cortex volume and negative affective bias in healthy adults.

Anxious individuals tend to show a negative affective bias in attention that likely reflects reduced executive control, a cognitive function associated with the inferior frontal cortex (IFC), particularly its posterior segment, pars opercularis. Here, we investigated the relations among gray matter volume in the pars opercularis of IFC, trait anxiety, and negative biases in attention, in healthy participants. Sixty-two adults underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging scanning, completed a trait anxiety measure, and performed an Affective Go/No-Go (AGN) task. IFC volumes were extracted us

Coping strategies and anticipatory processing in high and low socially anxious individuals.

The purpose of this study was to investigate coping responses associated with anticipatory social anxiety. Participants were presented with vignettes that involved anticipating a stressful social situation and were instructed to record their thoughts and recalled memories to allow for the examination of the content of anticipatory processing. Anticipatory coping and distraction were assessed via self-report. Results indicated that participants high in social anxiety were more likely to engage in mental preparation for stressful events compared to those low in social anxiety. Further, high soci

Neuropsychological analysis of anxiety and executive control of motor patterns in athletes and non-athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Even simple tapping tasks require cognitive processes. Some variants of the Finger Tapping Test (FTT) may reveal cognitive aspects associated with frontal processing, including executive functions such as inhibition, or emotional aspects such as anxiety. A context of particular interest for the application of cognitive-motor-anxiety interactions is sports. Although athletes generally exhibit better anxiety levels, they may experience heightened anxiety before important competitions. The problem lies in determining whether the application of anxiety control techniques can be usefu

Understanding the cognitive and emotional foundations of mathematical ability.

It has long been proposed that multiple domain-general abilities (such as language, IQ, and naming speed), domain-specific abilities (such as the processing of symbolic or non-symbolic quantities), and emotional factors (such as mathematical anxiety) each play a significant role in explaining individual differences in mathematical abilities. To better understand the influence and interplay of these factors, we examined a sample of 162 children from 3rd to 4th  grade, representing a wide range of mathematical abilities. Our findings revealed that both vocabulary and naming speed of digits were
