BACKGROUND: Surgical repair of obstructive lesions of the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) commonly creates pulmonary valve incompetence, which continues to stimulate research for the optimal materials and surgical techniques to reconstruct RVOT. An unusual case of a neonate with absent pericardium, left-sided diaphragmatic hernia, and hepatic hemangioendothelioma is described. The posterolateral diaphragmatic hernia was successfully repaired, and agenesis of the pericardium did not interfere with cardiac function postoperatively. The hepatic tumour was a coincidental radiological finding, while liver function and the biochemical profile were normal. We also present a review of the literature on congenital absence of the pericardium and conclude that all cases should be screened for cardiac and hepatic anomalies.

We report an autopsy case of a central nervous system (CNS) B-cell type lymphoma followed by cardiac tamponade. In this case, lymphoma cells which occurred primarily in the pericardium appear to metastasize to the brain and gradually increase in size in spite of control of the CNS lesion. OBJECTIVE: There is lack of information regarding the long-term behavior of aortic valve reconstruction with pericardium (AoR). A 16-year follow-up is reported here.
METHODS: Between 1988 and 1995, 92 consecutive patients had AoR with bovine (Group I, n=27) or glutaraldehyde-treated autologous pericardium (Group II, n=65). The mean age was 30 years (range 12-68). There were 65% males, 92% in sinus rhythm, 84% had rheumatic etiology and 36% had 'other valve' surgery. Mitral valve replacement with a mechanical prosthesis is a contraindication to the operation.
