Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity has been related to several psychiatric disorders and personality dimensions. The purpose of this study was to measure platelet MAO activity in personality disorders and determine its relationship to symptoms analogous to sensation seeking. Twenty-eight males admitted to a psychiatric unit with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of personality disorder were compared to normal controls. Patients with Axis I diagnoses other than adjustment disorder were excluded. There was no difference in MAO activity between patients and normals, although it was lower in borderline

Ninety-five randomly selected human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seropositive Air Force personnel were psychiatrically examined during a routine medical evaluation. Of the 95, 95% did not have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and were largely asymptomatic; 61.1% had clinical axis I diagnoses, which included simple phobia, adjustment disorders, hypoactive sexual desire disorder, alcohol use disorder, major depression, and organic mental disorders; 30.5% had personality disorders. Significantly higher frequencies (p less than 0.05) of simple phobia and hypoactive sexual desire disorder were no

BACKGROUND: Despite a growing forensic psychiatry literature, no previous study has examined in detail homicidal behaviour among offenders with cluster C personality disorders - the avoidant, dependent or obsessional personality disorders.
AIMS: This study aims to compare homicide offenders with cluster C personality disorders with those with other personality disorders on criminal history, offender-victim relationship and post-offence reaction variables.
METHODS: The sample was drawn from all Finnish homicide cases of 1996-2004 for whom a forensic psychiatric evaluation had been conducted.

The authors adopt a construct validity approach to examine the structural validity of diagnoses of paranoid, schizoid, and schizotypal personality disorders. Systematic descriptions of these diagnoses were developed based on features identified from the literature that were organized using the clinicians' ratings. Each diagnosis was described in terms of a series of behavioral dimensions. Sets of behavioral exemplars were developed to assess each dimension. Dimensions and diagnoses were found to exhibit satisfactory levels of internal consistency that were cross-validated in a general populati

The prevalence of DSM-III-R self defeating (masochistic) personality disorder was determined on an outpatient population (N = 82) and a normal population (N = 40) using the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire (PDQ). Fifteen (18.3%) of the outpatients and two (5%) of normals were assessed as having the disorder. Overlap of greater than 50% with borderline, avoidant, and dependent personality disorders was found. Validation of masochistic personality disorder will require it to be of value in research and clinically in ways distinct from the other personality disorders with which it is associat

Panic disorders (PD) which develop in the context of different psychiatric diseases (neurotic, personality disorder and schizotypal disorders) have their own clinical and neurophysiological features. The results of compressive-spectral analysis of EEG (CSA EEG) in patients with panic attack were different depending on the specifics of initial psychiatric status. EEG parameters in patients differed from those in controls. The common feature for all PD patients was the lower spectral density of theta-, alpha- and beta-bands as well as total spectral density without any alterations of region dist

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric disorders and homelessness are related, but temporal associations are unclear. We aimed to explore the overlap between hospital-based psychiatric disorders and sheltered homelessness.
METHODS: This population-based cohort study was conducted using the Danish registers e.g., the Danish Homeless Register and the Danish National Patient Register. The study cohort included all individuals aged 15 years or older, living in Denmark at least one day during 2002-2021 (born 1984-2006). First psychiatric diagnosis was used to define psychiatric disorder and first homeless shelte

The authors' objective was to examine the presence of Axis I and II psychiatric disorders among adult males and females with a history in childhood and/or adolescence of conduct disorder (CD). Data were derived from a large national sample of the U.S. population. Face-to-face interviews of more than 34,000 adults ages 18 years and older were conducted during 2004-2005 using the Alcohol Use Disorder and Associated Disabilities Interview Schedule-DSM-IV Version. After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics and psychiatric comorbidity, CD was associated with all Axis I and II disorders, p

From a total sample of 1,448 psychiatric outpatients, 81 (5.6%) received a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) according to DSM-III-R criteria. Fifty-three (65%) of them had another Axis I diagnosis, while this percentage increased to 78% (63/81) when lifetime psychiatric diagnoses were recorded. The most frequent comorbid diagnoses were panic disorder, dysthymia, major depression and social phobia. Forty-three (53%) of the GAD patients met the criteria for personality disorder. They manifested obsessive-compulsive, avoidant personality and personalities of cluster C in general sig

INTRODUCTION: We evaluate psychiatric disease associated with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) and study the role played by previous traumatic experiences, dissociative episodes and personality disorders.
METHOD: After diagnosing PNES in our epilepsy unit, we obtained a sample of 46 patients and carried out a structured psychiatric interview (SCID) following DSM-III-R criteria. We looked for previous dissociative episodes and prepared a questionnaire for traumatic experiences and basic clinical data.
RESULTS: The most frequent psychiatric disorders were depression, anxiety and somat

OBJECTIVE: To study the associations between psychiatric disorders and self-perceived problems among adolescent boys.
METHOD: The study population consisted of 2348 Finnish boys born during 1981 attending obligatory military call-up (79.7% of the original sample). At military call-up in 1999, the boys filled in the Young Adult Self-Report (YASR) and Orientation of Life Questionnaire (SOC-13). Information about psychiatric disorders was obtained from the national military register during the years 1999-2004.
RESULTS: Most of the psychopathology, adaptive functioning and SOC scales were associ

BACKGROUND: Psychotic depression (PD) is an under-researched disorder with severe symptoms and course of illness. Little is known about gender differences relating to this condition and possible variation of prognosis based on comorbid pathology. Our aim was to analyze the effects of gender and psychiatric comorbidities on the age of illness onset and on the outcome of psychotic depression.
METHODS: The study was carried out in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. We utilized register data to acquire information about lifetime psychiatric diagnoses, hospitalization, age of illness onset, r

BACKGROUND: Though effective medications for the treatment of mood disorders have been developed, panic anxiety, major depression and other psychiatric diseases, only small reduction in suicide rates has been achieved during last four decades. Further epidemiological, clinical and experimental studies are initiated to support both prevention and treatment of suicidal behaviour.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In ELSPAC study, the data of 3148 men and 3637 women--parents of children aged 3 years--were analysed with the aim to detect possible determinants of psychiatric disorders. These data included both

The State Hospital for the Insane at Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois, was the first public hospital of its kind to be established in the state and among the earliest to be built on the 'Kirkbride Plan'. It opened for patients in 1851. We describe the background to the establishment of the hospital and, so far as is possible from publicly available sources, its catchment area, the nature of the patients held there up to 1880, its mechanisms of discharge, and supposed causes of death. We end with a plea that after over 150 years, the release of hospital casebooks and similar records in dig

The presence of a borderline personality disorder must also be considered in forensic medicine appraisements, beside the various motivations for a self injurious behaviour and apart from other psychiatric illnesses. This personality disorder is frequently characterized by cuts and scratches made by the patients using sharp objects to inflict themselves when in situations causing great psychological distress. A case of a young female student is presented who exhibited a clear auto-destructive behaviour. Due to a tragic psychodynamic development, she committed suicide by means of carbamazepine i

BACKGROUND: Within the last five years the number of homeless persons in Germany has more than doubled, with many suffering from mental illnesses that require treatment. Whether the mental illness itself led to losing shelter or whether the state of being homeless increased the likelihood of developing symptoms of a mental disorder remains unclear. The current study assessed the interaction of homelessness and mental illness from a care provider perspective.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of inpatient routine data from 20 psychiatric hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW),

Maternal mental health is a critical public health issue, yet the evidence on rates of incident psychiatric disorders before, during, and after pregnancy is limited. This study aimed to describe the calendar time trends and characterize and compare the risk of maternal psychiatric disorders before, during, and after pregnancy. Leveraging the national and regional registers in Sweden, we conducted a cohort study of all women who gave birth 2003-2019 in Sweden (1,799,010 pregnancies from 1,052,977 women). We identified any incident diagnosis of psychiatric disorders recorded during three periods
