Nucleotide variability of Toscana virus M segment in strains isolated from clinical cases.

Toscana virus (TOSV), a member of the Bunyaviridae family, is an important etiologic agent of neurologic infection transmissible to humans by bites of the Phlebotomus spp. In consideration of the variations in the antigenic properties of Bunyaviruses and their potential genetic variability, we analysed a large region (2500nt) of the Toscana virus M segment coding for the non-structural protein (NSm) and the G(N) and G(C) glycoproteins in several strains isolated from patients with meningitis from 1998 to 2004 in the region of Tuscany in Italy. The sequences were compared with the reference str…

Nocturnal activity of phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in a cutaneous leishmaniasis focus in Chichaoua, Morocco.

The nocturnal activity of phlebotomine sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) was studied "at an epidemic focus" on human cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania tropica Wright in Chichaoua province, in Morocco. Sandflies were collected using light and sticky-paper traps changed at 2-h intervals, inside and around houses, in August and October 2004. Overall, 633 sandflies, belonging to six species of Phlebotomus and three of Sergentomyia, were collected. Sandfly activity was nocturnal and higher at twilight. Several activity patterns were observed according to the species. Phlebotomus (Paraphlebot…

Phlebotomine sand flies in Southwest Germany: an update with records in new locations.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases (VBD) are of growing global importance. Sand flies are potential vectors for phleboviruses (family Phenuiviridae) including Toscana virus (TOSV), Sicilian virus, Sandfly fever, Naples virus, and Leishmania parasites in Europe. To date, only two phlebotomine species have been recorded for Germany: Phlebotomus perniciosus and Phlebotomus mascittii. This study updates the distribution and abundance of the two occurring species. METHODS: An entomological field study was carried out during 2015-2018 to assess the abundance of sand flies in Southwest Germany within…

Epidemiology and clinical manifestations of visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis in Baringo District, Rift Valley, Kenya. A literature review.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), caused by Leishmania donovani, is endemic in Baringo District, Kenya. The disease has a focal distribution in the dry, hot areas below 1500 metres. Infections may be characterized as follows: 1) asymptomatic, 2) subclinical and self-limiting (not medically identifiable), and 3) clinically manifest disease (that is medically identifiable). Half of the reported VL patients are between 5 and 14 years of age and 66% of them are males. The reasons for the focal distribution and for the age and sex preference are discussed. Phlebotomus martini is the vector of the parasi…

Effectiveness of insecticide thermal fogging in hyrax dens in the control of leishmaniasis vectors in rural Palestine: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) is endemic in Palestine and transmitted by Phlebotomus sand flies. They inhabit dens of hyraxes, the reservoir animal. Control measures were implemented since 1996 but cases still occur. We estimated the effect of insecticide thermal fogging inside hyrax dens on sand fly density and leishmania infection. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: During July-September 2019, we conducted a 12-week controlled interrupted time series study in two control and one intervention sites containing three hyrax dens each. We implemented Permethrin thermal fogging …

Genetic diversity and population structure of visceral leishmaniasis vector sandflies in China.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) has re-emerged in several regions of China, particularly in mountain-type zoonotic foci. Its major vectors, Phlebotomus chinensis, Phlebotomus longiductus, and Phlebotomus wui, may shape regional transmission risk through differences in population structure and dispersal. However, their large-scale genetic connectivity remains poorly understood. This study aimed to assess their mitochondrial genetic diversity, population structure, and gene flow across VL-endemic regions of China. METHODS: We analyzed mitochondrial genetic diversity and population struc…

Comparison of insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying to control the vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Mymensingh District, Bangladesh.

Integrated vector management is a pillar of the South Asian visceral leishmaniasis (VL) elimination program, but the best approach remains a matter of debate. Sand fly seasonality was determined in 40 houses sampled monthly. The impact of interventions on Phlebotomus argentipes density was tested from 2006-2007 in a cluster-randomized trial with four arms: indoor residual spraying (IRS), insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), environmental management (EVM), and no intervention. Phlebotomus argentipes density peaked in March with the highest proportion of gravid females in May. The EVM (mud plasterin…

Leishmaniasis in the Jordan Valley II. Sandflies and transmission in the central endemic area.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Jordan Valley is maintained within the close association of the rodent Psammomys obesus and sandfly Phlebotomus papatasi, which appear to be the exclusive host and vector species. The incidence of the disease was similar to the distribution of Psammomys colonies in the region, i.e., the plains of light stoneless soil. An infection rate of 93% was recorded in the very common P. obesus. Other potential host species, except for Mus musculus, were scarce and no infection with Leishmania was found in them. The only Phlebotomus species caught in significant numbers was…
