Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is defined as an uncontrollable disposition to worry about one's welfare and that of one's immediate kin. … ralized anxiety appears to predispose to and is often associated with depression, and a spectrum of phobic disorders, as well as alcohol and sedative use. These considerations place GAD (and the putative GAT) in the limelight and underscore the need for more research into its fundamental characteristics. Towards this aim, a self-rated GAT measure under development …

The tricyclic antidepressants and the monoamine oxidase inhibitors have been shown to be effective in the treatment of some patients with phobic and panic disorders. To explain this action it has been suggested that a number of these patients may have an atypical biological depression. In an attempt to test this hypothesis we used the dexamethasone suppression test (DST), which has been proposed as a state dependent biological marker of depression. We compared the non-suppression rate of agoraphobic patients suffering panic attacks with controls and with patients suffering major depression. Tw

This paper reports results of an open prospective study of 26 patients who met DSM-III criteria for panic disorder or agoraphobia with panic attacks. Cognitive-behavioral treatment alone produced clinically and statistically significant improvement in panic symptoms, including both full-blown and limited symptom episodes. In addition, the treatment produced improvement in associated symptoms of phobic avoidance and generalized anxiety. This work provides further preliminary indication of the usefulness of cognitive-behavioral strategies as an alternative to medication in symptom-oriented treat

The quality of the defensive response to a threat depends on the elements that trigger the fear response. The current classification system of phobias does not account for this. Here, we analyze the fear-eliciting elements and discern the different types of fears that originate from them. We propose Pain, Disgust, Vasovagal response, Visual-vestibular and postural interactions, Movement and Speed, Distance and Size, Low and mid-level visual features, Smell, and Territory and social status. We subdivide phobias according to the fear-eliciting elements most frequently triggered by them and their

Health impairments are problems in the body and mental functioning, which can be a result of a disease or side effects of treatment. Fear of health impairments plays an important role in decision-making and behavior. People might fear health impairments because of their beliefs about their dangerousness, but also because these impairments threaten important values. However, while the role of cognitive appraisal in the fear of health impairments is investigated, the role of motivation is less clear. To fill this gap, this study analyzed the role of values as motivational constructs in the fear

Forty years on from the initial idea that fears could be learnt vicariously through observing other people's responses to a situation or stimulus, this review looks at the evidence for this theory as an explanatory model of clinical fear. First, we review early experimental evidence that fears can be learnt vicariously before turning to the evidence from both primate and human research that clinical fears can be acquired in this way. Finally, we review recent evidence from research on non-anxious children. Throughout the review we highlight problems and areas for future research. We conclude b

The contemporary integrative theoretical and therapeutic concepts of social phobia in developmental period have been presented in the study. Besides current neurobiological theories, a very important hypothesis about behavioral inhibition has been represented as a predisposition of social phobia. The cognitive-behavioral theories of social phobia are dominant among psychological theories. The integrative concept of social phobia is the most realistic approach to this disorder and the bridge between biological and psychological theories. The interaction between biological and psychological etio

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is among the most common of all psychiatric disorders. It presents with a lifetime prevalence rate of up to 16% in the general population and, like other anxiety disorders, is more frequent in women. Patients with SAD suffer from considerable psychiatric comorbidity that is often preceded by social anxiety. Social anxiety affects people early in life and provokes a great deal of impairment and cost, much being related to the under-recognition and/or under-treatment of this disorder, which occurs frequently with GPs and others specialists. There is a clear need amo

Social phobia is a psychological disorder characterized by the fear of being scrutinized by others and the belief that embarrassment or humiliation will be the result when contact is made with other people. Its point prevalence is believed to be in the range of 5-10%, with the lifetime prevalence being even higher. At least two subtypes of social phobia, discrete and generalized, are seen in clinical samples, with the latter subtype being associated with greater functional impairment. The onset of social phobia is early, usually preceding the onset of comorbid conditions such as major depressi
