Relationship between aerodynamic measures of glottal efficiency and stroboscopic findings in asymptomatic singing students.

Singing requires exquisite coordination between the respiratory and phonatory systems to efficiently control glottal airflow. Asymptomatic singing students underwent pulmonary function testing (PFT), videostrobolaryngoscopic examination, and measures of glottal efficiency (maximum phonation time [MPT], glottal flow rate [GFR], and phonation quotient [PQ]) performed in both a sung and spoken tone. Pulmonary function and glottal efficiency values were within reported normative data for professional singers. However, sung tones were made with significantly higher GFR and PQ and lower PQ than spok…

Function evaluation of laryngeal reconstruction using infrahyoid muscle after partial laryngectomy in 37patients.

UNLABELLED: Treatment of small laryngeal cancerous lesions (T1 and T2) is based on partial endoscopic or open surgery and radiotherapy. In addition to the oncological imperative, these techniques must optimally preserve the functions of breathing, swallowing and phonation. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the above functions in patients treated with supracricoid laryngectomy and reconstruction using infrahyoid muscle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Breathing, swallowing and phonation were analyzed in 37patients treated in two institutes between 2005 and 2015. All patients undergoing the above type of reconstru…

Vocal cord closure pressure during volitional swallow and other voluntary tasks.

Our goal was to determine and compare vocal cord (VC) closure pressure and its associated intratracheal pressure during several physiological events such as swallowing, coughing, straining, and phonation. We studied 11 healthy subjects (age 41 +/- 2 years) with no current or previous history of laryngeal or pulmonary diseases. VC closure pressure during the above-mentioned tasks was studied using a concurrent manometric and endoscopic technique. VC closure pressure during dry swallows averaged 298 +/- 23 mm Hg, while intratracheal pressures exhibited a biphasic pattern ranging from -4 +/- 0.5 …

Aerodynamic mechanisms underlying treatment-related changes in vocal intensity in patients with Parkinson disease.

The purpose of this study was to document changes in aerodynamic and glottographic aspects of vocal function in patients with Parkinson disease who received two forms of high effort treatment. Previous reports (Ramig, Countryman, Thompson, & Horii, 1995) have documented increased sound pressure level (SPL) following treatment that trained phonation and respiration (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment: LSVT), but not for treatment that trained respiration only (R). In order to examine the mechanisms underlying these differences, measures of maximum flow declination rate (MFDR) and estimated subglotta…

Does Cervical Muscular Contraction Affect the Measurement for Electroglottographic Perturbation Parameters?

OBJECTIVES: The purpose was to assess whether cervical muscular contraction during phonation influences the period and amplitude perturbation quotients (PPQ and APQ, respectively) of electroglottographic (EGG) signals, and whether high-pass filtering can attenuate these effects. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective. METHODS: We included 19 nondysphonic speakers and 21 patients with muscle tension dysphonia. During the recording of acoustic and EGG signals, each participant was instructed to naturally phonate sustained vowels /i:/ and /a:/ (NP tasks), and additionally, each nondysphonic participant was …

[Electromyographic study of psychogenic dysphonias].

Psychogenic dysphonia traditionally has been considered a case of dystonia in which the functional disturbance is attributed to a disturbance in the synchronization of the laryngeal abductor and adductor muscles. Five patients with psychogenic dysphonia were studied by telelaryngoscopy and conventional laryngeal electromyography. This excluded the neuromuscular origin of the damage and confirmed the diagnosis. A complete glottic gap was present during phonation at the beginning of the exploration, but at the end of the examination, direct laryngoscopy revealed complete glottic closure with nor…
