Calcite has recently attracted extensive research interest in fields ranging from geoscience to carbon dioxide removal. Although much effort has been made to study the (2 × 1) reconstruction of the most stable (104) surface, the origin of this reconstruction remains unclear. Here, we carefully investigated the atomic and electronic structures of calcite (104) via density functional theory methods with van der Waals corrections. The results unambiguously show that the driving force for this reconstruction is the intrinsic demands of surface atoms to increase the coordination numbers. Upon recon

The Lithium-chromium phosphate Li3Cr2(PO3)4 sample was synthesized via the solid-state reaction method. The morphological integrity and chemical homogeneity were verified by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Infrared and Raman patterns were also analyzed. Optical absorption spectrum analysis, conducted within the range of 10000 cm-1 to 30000 cm-1 at room temperature, yielded some optical parameters (Eg, Eu, δ , k, n). The Neuhauser model is used to interpret the interference dip which was on the absorption spectrum of Li3Cr2(PO3)4. The Fourier tran

In this paper, we use density functional theory (DFT) using full-potential linearized augmented plan wave plus local orbital method (FP-LAPW + lo). The structural, electronic, optical, photocatalytic, mechanical, vibrational, and thermodynamical behaviors of new double antiperovskite (DAP) Cs6AgBiX2 (X = Cl, Br, I) were studied. The band structure was calculated with and without spin orbit coupling (SOC). Using the TB-mBJ approach (Hybrid) revealed bandgap values of 1.504 eV, 1.491 eV, and 1.392 eV for Cs6AgBiCl2, Cs6AgBiBr2, and Cs6AgBiI2, respectively. Optical characteristics were studied to

In this work, evidence of multi-band superconductivity and presence of mixed parity states in full Heusler alloy LuPd2Sn is investigated using the x-ray diffraction, temperature and field dependent resistivity, temperature dependent magnetization, and heat capacity measurements. Our studies reveal that LuPd2Sn is a type II superconductor and undergoes superconducting transition below 2.5 K. Above 2.5 K, the temperature and field dependence of resistivity indicate to the presence of multiple bands and inter-band phonon assisted scattering. The upper critical field,HC2(T) exhibits linear behavio

Carrier relaxation dynamics of InSe flakes is investigated by using time-resolved pump-probe reflectivity measurement. The photocarriers associated with the P xy orbital band-edge transition at 2.40 eV, which is coupled to the in-plane polarized light, is observed to possess a lifetime of ∼19 ps at room temperature and ∼99 ps at 10 K. The temperature and power dependent carrier lifetime suggests that Shockley-Read-Hall process is the dominant nonradiative recombination mechanism responsible for the carrier relaxation. In addition, the electron scattering with a 14.5 meV optical phonon plays an

A general synthesis approach of aqueous glutathione-capped ternary Ag-In-S, Cu-In-S, and Hg-In-S nanocrystals (NCs) is introduced, allowing the NC composition to be varied in a broad range. Ternary Hg-In-S (HIS) NCs are reported for the first time and found to have the same tetragonal chalcopyrite motif as Cu-In-S and Ag-In-S NCs, corroborated by phonon spectra, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic data indicate mercury to be present as Hg+ in the Hg-In-S NCs. Colloidal HIS and Hg-In-S/ZnS NCs showed little or no variations of the spectral width of the photoluminescence band upon NC size se

The catalytic activity of metals supported on oxides depends on their charge and oxidation state. Yet, the determination of the degree of charge transfer at the interface remains elusive. Here, by combining density functional theory and first-principles molecular dynamics on Pt single atoms deposited on the CeO2 (100) surface, we show that the common representation of a static metal charge is oversimplified. Instead, we identify several well-defined charge states that are dynamically interconnected and thus coexist. The origin of this new class of strong metal-support interactions is the relat

Conventional optical components are limited to size scales much larger than the wavelength of light, as changes to the amplitude, phase and polarization of the electromagnetic fields are accrued gradually along an optical path. However, advances in nanophotonics have produced ultrathin, so-called 'flat' optical components that beget abrupt changes in these properties over distances significantly shorter than the free-space wavelength. Although high optical losses still plague many approaches, phonon polariton (PhP) materials have demonstrated long lifetimes for sub-diffractional modes in compa

Because of the excellent physical and chemical properties of phosphorene, phosphorene and phosphorene-like materials have attracted extensive attention. Since phosphorus belongs to group V, some group IV-VI compounds could also form phosphorene-like configurations. In this work, GeO, SnO, GeS, and SnS monolayers were constructed to investigate the structural and electronic properties by employing first-principles computations. Phonon spectra suggest that these monolayers are dynamically stable and could be realized in experiments. These monolayers are all semiconductors with the band gaps of 2

The Visible absorption and Raman spectra of β-carotene were measured in dimethyl sulfoxide in temperature ranging from 81 to 25 ℃ and in carbon disulfide in pressure range from 0.04 to 0.60 GPa, respectively. The results indicated that the visible absorption and Raman spectra are both red-shifted, Raman scattering cross section increase with the temperature decreasing. And with the pressure increasing, the visible absorption spectra are red-shifted, but the frequency shift towards higher frequencies in the Raman spectra, the Raman scattering cross section decrease unexpectedly. The latter can’

We have performed a set of first-principles simulations to consider the possible phase transitions in molecular crystals of HCN under high pressure. Our calculations reveal several transition paths from the orthorhombic phase to tetragonal and then to triclinic phases. The transitions from the orthorhombic to the tetragonal phases are of the second order, whereas those from the tetragonal to the triclinic phases turn out to be of the first-order type and characterized by an abrupt decrease in volume. Our calculations show that, by adjustment of the temperature and pressure of the HCN molecular

In thermoelectrics, the material's performance stems from a delicate tradeoff between atomic order and disorder. Generally, dopants and thus atomic disorder are indispensable for optimizing the carrier concentration and scatter short-wavelength heat-carrying phonons. However, the strong disorder has been perceived as detrimental to the semiconductor's electrical conductivity owing to the deteriorated carrier mobility. Here, we report the sustainable role of strong atomic disorder in suppressing the detrimental phase transition and enhancing the thermoelectric performance in GeTe. We found that…

Crystalline C60 is a molecular solid whose electronic properties emerge from the interplay of intermolecular hopping, electron correlations, and electron-vibration coupling. Unlike moiré van der Waals heterostructures, where the interaction strength is commonly tuned by twist angle, molecular materials offer a complementary route in which the layer number, molecular orientation, and substrate registry provide experimentally accessible control parameters. Here we present a systematic thickness-dependent angle-resolved photoemission study of C60 films, spanning the monolayer to the bulk limit. T

Chiral charge-density waves (CDWs) are a rare form of electronic order with handedness, enabling novel couplings among light, lattice, and topology in quantum materials. Yet the microscopic origin of chirality has remained elusive, even in the prototypical chiral CDW system 1T-TiSe2. Using ab initio calculations, we investigate the structural stability and electronic structure of competing CDW models in 1T-TiSe2. We show that a chiral monoclinic ( C 2 ) structure is stabilized by the cooperative condensation of multiple phonon modes and reproduces the chiral topography and energy gap observed

While all-optical control of magnetism offers great potential for developing ultrafast spintronic devices, achieving rapid generation of transient magnetic states with long-term stability remains a significant challenge. Here, we propose that the relaxation of photoexcited electrons in a type-II spin-antiparallel heterostructure can give rise to multiple stable magnetic states. Photoinduced spin-dynamics simulations of the CrI3/CrBr3 heterostructure reveal an ultrafast phase transition from the antiferromagnetic (AFM) to the ferrimagnetic (FiM) state within 826 fs. The relaxation pathways and

While laser 3D printing offers unique advantages for fabricating complex architectures, its broader application is hindered by the stringent requirements for high-quality powder precursors and the inferior thermoelectric properties of the printed bulk materials. Herein, irregularly shaped p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 powders were successfully printed into polycrystalline bulks using the laser-directed energy deposition (L-DED) method via the optimization of printing parameters. The incorporation of excess Te and Sb atoms not only facilitates lattice plainification to enhance carrier transport, but als

Hyperbolic phonon polaritons offer a unique and powerful platform for enhancing directional light-matter interactions at the nanoscale, benefiting from their long lifetimes and deep subwavelength confinement. In particular, the interaction between free electrons and flat-band-like iso-frequency curves (IFCs) gives rise to strongly enhanced electromagnetic radiation, providing a novel, to the best of our knowledge, route toward compact mid-infrared optical sources without the need for complex nanostructuring. Here, we develop a general theoretical framework to describe free-electron-induced fla

Highly efficient and stable reduced-dimensional halide perovskite (RDP) emitters are of vital importance for perovskite optoexcitonic devices. However, simultaneous improvement of their luminescence efficiency, stability, and phase purity based on principles without using external passivators has been a tremendous challenge. Here, an abnormal chiral coupling effect is introduced in the chiral benzene halide RDPs. Our strategy facilitates the construction of the network of both short-range nanoscale lattices and long-range superstructures, which leads to improved phase purity, reduced defects,

Ferroelectric metals, traditionally considered mutually exclusive, face enduring challenges owing to screening effects of itinerant electrons on ferroelectric order. However, in certain van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, two-dimensional materials with distinct structural and physical properties can be alternatingly arranged in layers, retaining their individual characteristics and thereby enabling the coexistence of ferroelectricity and metallicity. Here, we report the coexistence of robust in-plane ferroelectricity and exceptional metallicity in a natural vdW superlattice (SnSe)_{1.16}(NbS
