Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been widely used for modulating sensory, motor and cognitive functions, but there are only few attempts to induce and change illusory perception. Visual illusions have been the most traditional and effective way to investigate visual processing through the comparison between physical reality and subjective reports. Here we used tDCS to modulate two different visual illusions, namely the Brentano illusion and the glare effect, with the aim of uncovering the influence of top-down mechanisms on bottom-up visual perception in two experiments. In E

BACKGROUND: This review discusses the findings in the literature on pain and distraction tasks according to their sensory modality. Distraction tasks have been shown to reduce (experimentally induced) acute pain and chronic pain. This can be influenced by nature and by the sensory modalities used in the distraction tasks. Yet the effect on reducing pain according to the sensory modality of the distraction task has received little attention.
METHODS: A bibliographic search was performed in different databases. The studies will be systematized according to the sensory modality in which the dist

The principles that guide large-scale cortical reorganization remain unclear. In the blind, several visual regions preserve their task specificity; ventral visual areas, for example, become engaged in auditory and tactile object-recognition tasks. It remains open whether task-specific reorganization is unique to the visual cortex or, alternatively, whether this kind of plasticity is a general principle applying to other cortical areas. Auditory areas can become recruited for visual and tactile input in the deaf. Although nonhuman data suggest that this reorganization might be task specific, hu

OBJECTIVE: The time course during letter-sound processing was investigated in children with developmental dyslexia (DD) and typically developing (TD) children using electroencephalography.
METHOD: Thirty-eight children with DD and 25 TD children participated in a visual-auditory oddball paradigm. Event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by standard and deviant stimuli in an early (100-190 ms) and late (560-750 ms) time window were analysed.
RESULTS: In the early time window, ERPs elicited by the deviant stimulus were delayed and less left lateralized over fronto-temporal electrodes for child

The ability to integrate auditory and visual information is critical for effective perception and interaction with the environment, and is thought to be abnormal in some clinical populations. Several studies have investigated the time window over which audiovisual events are integrated, also called the temporal binding window, and revealed asymmetries depending on the order of audiovisual input (i.e. the leading sense). When judging audiovisual simultaneity, the binding window appears narrower and non-malleable for auditory-leading stimulus pairs and wider and trainable for visual-leading pair

Some people show slower extinction of UCS expectancies than other people. Little is known about what predicts such delayed extinction. Extinction requires that people deduce the logical implication of corrective experiences challenging the previously learned CS-UCS contingency. "A strong habitual tendency to confirm beliefs" may therefore be a powerful mechanism immunising against refutation of UCS expectancies. This study investigated whether individual differences in such a belief confirming tendency (a process called "belief bias") may help in explaining individual differences in extinction

RATIONALE: Novel stimuli paired with exposure to addictive drugs can elicit approach through Pavlovian learning. While such approach behavior, or sign tracking, has been documented for cocaine and alcohol, it has not been shown to occur with opiate drugs like heroin. Most Pavlovian conditioned approach paradigms use an operandum as the sign, so that sign tracking can be easily automated.
OBJECTIVES: We were interested in assessing whether approach behavior occurs to an audiovisual cue paired with an intravenous heroin infusion. If so, would this behavior exhibit characteristics of other Pavlo

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) at certain frequencies increases thresholds for motor-evoked potentials and phosphenes following stimulation of cortex. Consequently rTMS is often assumed to introduce a "virtual lesion" in stimulated brain regions, with correspondingly diminished behavioral performance.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we investigated the effects of rTMS to visual cortex on subjects' ability to perform visual psychophysical tasks. Contrary to expectations of a visual deficit, we find that rTMS often improves the discrimination of visual feat

Anecdotally, it has been reported that individuals with acquired prosopagnosia compensate for their inability to recognize faces by using other person identity cues such as hair, gait or the voice. Are they therefore superior at the use of non-face cues, specifically voices, to person identity? Here, we empirically measure person and object identity recognition in a patient with acquired prosopagnosia and object agnosia. We quantify person identity (face and voice) and object identity (car and horn) recognition for visual, auditory, and bimodal (visual and auditory) stimuli. The patient is una

Recent studies demonstrated tactile illusions in healthy subjects by manipulating visual and tactile information. For example, a rubber hand, lying on a table in front of the subject and not connected with the body, can be felt by the subject as belonging to his or her own body by a simple visuotactile manipulation. Aim of the present study was to create an illusion in which the subject feels touch on a body site which is different from the actual touch, hence showing a referral of touch similar to those reported in phantom limb patients. Since it is known from animal studies that tactile illu

We studied the modification of auditory perception in three different conditions in twenty subjects. Observing other person's discordant articulatory gestures deteriorated identification of acoustic speech stimuli and modified the auditory percept, causing a strong McGurk effect. A similar effect was found when the subjects watched their own silent articulation in a mirror and acoustic stimuli were simultaneously presented to their ears. Interestingly, a smaller but significant effect was even obtained when the subjects just silently articulated the syllables without visual feedback. On the ot

The present event-related potential (ERP) study investigated whether attending to a particular direction of motion similarly enhances the processing of auditory and visual stimuli. ERPs were recorded while participants perceived horizontally moving visual and auditory stimuli. Attention was manipulated by asking participants to detect an infrequent target stimulus that was of a specified modality (either visual or auditory) and that moved in a specified direction (either leftward or rightward). Stimuli moving in the attended direction elicited ERPs that were more negative than ERPs to stimuli

Static and dynamic contrast sensitivities (sCS and dCS) were evaluated before, during, immediately after and 10 min after anodal and cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to the occipital cortex of 15 healthy subjects. Using 4 c/d spatial and 4 Hz temporal frequencies significant sCS and dCS loss was found during and immediately after 7 min cathodal stimulation while anodal stimulation had no effect. Ten minutes after the end of the stimulation the sCS and dCS values had reached the baseline levels. Our results show that primary visual functions, such as contrast dete

Analysis of neural interactions explains the activation of occipital cortex by an auditory stimulus. J. Neurophysiol. 80: 2790-2796, 1998. Large-scale neural interactions were characterized in human subjects as they learned that an auditory stimulus signaled a visual event. Once learned, activation of left dorsal occipital cortex (increased regional cerebral blood flow) was observed when the auditory stimulus was presented alone. Partial least-squares analysis of the interregional correlations (functional connectivity) between the occipital area and the rest of the brain identified a pattern o

Much of the laboratory investigation on the auditory and visual areas of the posterior vermis has been carried out under barbiturate anesthesia. It is now known that barbiturates potentiate GABA inhibition by binding directly to the GABA receptor protein. Since GABAergic receptors are present in many cell types of the cerebellar cortex, barbiturate anesthesia is likely to interfere severely with cerebellar physiology. We have examined auditory and visual responses in granule cells in the cerebellum of the cat under nitrous oxide anesthesia. To our surprise, nitrous oxide abolished auditory as

This study investigated the effect of heme oxygenase (HO) inhibition on visual evoked potentials (VEPs). HO catalyzes the oxidative degradation of heme. Products of HO reaction are biliverdin, ferrous iron, and carbon monoxide (CO). CO is a signal molecule and is an endogenous modulator in the soluble guanylate cyclase/cyclic guanosine monophosphate signaling pathway. Rats were treated with HO inhibitors tin protoporphyrin IX (SnPP IX) or zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZnPP IX) or HO inducer sodium arsenite (Na-arsenite). Soluble guanylate cyclase is inhibited by 1H-[1,2,3]oxydiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin

There is a growing body of evidence that the central nervous system (CNS), even in the adult animal, is capable of adaptation and reorganization not only as a result of partial damage to the CNS but also in response to stimulation. Environmental stimulation produces changes including expansion of visual cortex, increases in dendritic branching, glia and cholinesterase. Environmental stimulation also produces behavioural changes. Experimental electrical stimulation produces changes in synapse size, synaptic vesicle change, dendritic branching and changes in synaptic transmission. In man, repeti

Over past decades, converging neuroimaging and electrophysiological findings have suggested a crucial role of posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in supporting the storage capacity of visual short-term memory (VSTM). Moreover, a few recent studies have shown that electrical stimulation over PPC can enhance VSTM capacity, making it a promising method for improving VSTM function. However, the reliability of these results is still in question because null findings have also been observed. Among studies that reported significant effects, some found increased VSTM capacity only in people with low capac

The understanding of the mechanisms underlying the representation of temporal intervals in the range of milliseconds/seconds remains a complex issue. Different brain areas have been identified as critical in temporal processing. The activation of specific areas is depending on temporal range involved in the tasks and on the modalities used for marking time. Here, for the first time, transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) was applied over the right posterior parietal (P4) and right frontal (F4) cortex to investigate their role in intra- and intermodal temporal processing involving brief t
