Persons with dementia (PWD) are known to have difficulty with participation and focus during physical activity. Virtual reality (VR) offers a unique medium for motor learning but has only been used previously for cognitive assessment for PWD. Our study had two objectives: (1) investigate the feasibility and safety of an exercise-based VR training program in PWD, and (2) investigate its effects on balance and mobility. The intervention consisted of daily (5 d/wk, 1 h each) VR training sessions for 2 wk for a single research participant. Clinical balance and mobility measures were assessed 1 wk

It has been well established that physical exercise is associated with augmented cognitive function, but the exact mechanisms by which peripheral activity affects the plasticity of the brain remain mechanistically elusive. This narrative review synthesises evidence from mouse models and human studies to clarify how physical exercise may enhance hippocampus-dependent cognition through systemic, neurovascular, immune, and metabolic mechanisms instead of direct "brain training" alone. This distinction is supported by the limited far transfer shown in many cognitive training models, wherein improv

T4-binding globulin (TBG) is a glycoprotein synthesized by the liver and is the principal carrier of T4 and T3 in serum. In this report, we demonstrate that the Hep G2 cell line, derived from a human hepatoblastoma, synthesizes and secretes TBG, the properties of which were characterized. Hep G2 cells secreted TBG into the medium after more than 100 transfers in tissue culture conditions. At confluency and after changing to serum-free culture conditions, TBG accumulation into the medium was linear for 3 days and constituted approximately 0.16% of the proteins synthesized over 24 h. Its abundan

Estuaries are among the most intensively used aquatic environments, where steep physical and biogeochemical gradients interact with dense human populations and valuable ecosystems. Intense human usage has historically led to ecological degradation and persistent use conflicts, in many temperate estuaries that host major inland ports such as the Elbe estuary in the North Sea. Climate change, with its associated effects on sea levels and global temperatures, represents a significant challenge for the functioning of these systems. The impact on estuarine hydrodynamics, sediment dynamics and water

The middle ear is too complex a system for its function to be fully understood with simple descriptive models. Realistic mathematical models must be used in which structural elements are represented by geometrically correct three-dimensional (3D) models with correct physical parameters and boundary conditions. In the past, the choice of boundary conditions could not be based on experimental evidence as no clear-cut data were available. We have, therefore, studied the deformation of the tympanic membrane (TM) at its boundaries using X-ray microscopic computed tomography in human and gerbil whil

In this study, we extended our previously developed anatomically detailed three-dimensional (3-D) thermoregulatory virtual human model for predicting heat stress to allow for predictions of heat and cold stress in one unified model. Starting with the modified Pennes bioheat transfer equation to estimate the spatiotemporal temperature distribution within the body as the underlying modeling structure, we developed a new formulation to characterize the spatial variation of blood temperature between body elements and within the limbs. We also implemented the means to represent heat generated from

Observation of human joint motion plays an important role in many fields. The results of the human links can provide information about musculoskeletal parameters. Some devices can track real-time joint movement in the human body during essential daily activities, sports, and rehabilitation with memory for storing the information concerning the body. Based on the algorithm for signal features, the collected data can reveal the conditions of multiple physical and mental health issues. This study proposes a novel method for monitoring human joint motion at a low cost. We propose a mathematical mo

Prevention of thrombotic disorders has priority over treatment. There are only two pathologically relevant tests which are suitable for measuring the overall thrombotic status both in experimental conditions and in humans. The Global Thrombosis Test (GTT) and the Global Parallel-Plate Thrombosis Test can detect the pathologically relevant global thrombotic status. These tests have been successfully used for monitoring the effect of antithrombotic drugs and for developing novel antithrombotic agents. By using GTT, varieties of fruits, vegetables, and regular physical exercise have been tested f

The effects of physical exercise on nighttime melatonin secretion have never been investigated in humans. For this purpose, plasma melatonin levels were measured at different times during the day and the night in seven healthy men (aged 26-33 yrs), both in resting condition and before and after a physical exercise performed between 10.40 and 11.00 p.m.. The exercise consisted in bicycling on a bicycle ergometer at 50% of the personal maximal work capacity (MWC) for 10 min, followed by other 10 min of bicycling at 80% of the MWC. The results clearly showed that physical stress at night signific

The Standardbred racing industry plays an important role in the North American economy and is expected to continue operating and growing. However, public perception is often unfavorable, with increasing concern about the health and welfare of Standardbred racehorses. Despite this, limited research has examined Standardbred well-being. To address this gap, a survey of equine trainers on Prince Edward Island (PEI) was conducted to evaluate key health and welfare issues during racing careers. Results showed that over one quarter of respondents had at least one horse displaying stereotypic behavio

BACKGROUND: Exercise improves functional outcomes in patients with diabetic cardiomyopathy (DiaCM). The molecular mechanism underlying cardiac benefits of exercise in DiaCM remains incompletely understood. N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most common form of messenger RNA modification in eukaryotes and has been implicated in cardiac development and disease. However, the role of m6A in DiaCM and in the mitigating effects of exercise on this disease are unclear.
METHODS: Cardiomyocyte-specific N6-adenosine-methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3, an m6A methyltransferase) knockout mice and their wild-t

PURPOSE: Exercise is widely recognized for providing numerous benefits to prostate cancer (PCa) survivors. Numerous preclinical studies have investigated the role of exercise on tumor progression, but results are often controversial, largely due to variations in experimental protocols.
METHODS: In this study, the comprehensive effects of exercise on PCa were evaluated with two different aerobic exercises, forced and structured exercise training (ET) on treadmill, and voluntary wheel running (VWR). Human PCa PPC-1 cells or PBS was injected into athymic nude mice, randomized into four groups: h

Skeletal muscle is essential for movement, respiration, and metabolism, with mTORC1 acting as a key regulator of protein synthesis and degradation. In aging muscle, mTORC1 becomes overactivated, contributing to sarcopenia, though the mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we identify DEAF1, a FOXO-regulated transcription factor, as a key upstream driver of mTORC1 in aged muscle. Elevated Deaf1 expression increases mTOR transcription, leading to heightened mTORC1 activity, impaired proteostasis, and muscle senescence. Remarkably, exercise suppresses Deaf1 expression via FOXO activation, restoring mTO

In this study, the effects of a 12-week exercise program combining aerobic and resistance training on high-fat diet-induced obese Sprague Dawley (SD) rats after the injection of beta-amyloid into the cerebral ventricle were investigated. Changes in physical fitness, cognitive function, blood levels of beta-amyloid and metabolic factors, and protein expressions of neurotrophic factors related to brain function such as BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) in the quadriceps femoris, hippocampus, and cerebral cortex were analyzed. The subjects were thirty-two 10-week-old SD rats (DBL Co., Ltd.

UNLABELLED: Conditioned pain modulation (CPM) refers to the diminution of perceived pain intensity for a test stimulus following application of a conditioning stimulus to a remote area of the body, and is thought to reflect the descending inhibition of nociceptive signals. Studying CPM in children may inform interventions to enhance central pain inhibition within a developmental framework. We assessed CPM in 133 healthy children (mean age = 13 years; 52.6% girls) and tested the effects of sex and age. Participants were exposed to 4 trials of a pressure test stimulus before, during, and after t

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Interactions of various systems were investigated in several studies of dynamic systems, but the interactions between horse and rider have not yet been documented. These interactions include the rider's ability to control the horse, adapt to the horse and maintain both participants' body position. An optimum interaction is also adapted to the individual nature of the horse.
OBJECTIVE: To identify rider-horse interactions by means of artificial neural nets analysing the time-continuous pattern.
METHODS: Fourteen horses were measured trotting on hand, and ridden a

Recent neurophysiological studies suggest that repetitive execution of identical movements is crucial for motor learning. During and after repetitive motor action, changes in motor cortical excitability have been demonstrated by means of transcranial magnetic stimulation. Nevertheless, the frequency and intensity of movement repetition that are necessary to achieve an optimal improvement in motor function are unknown. Fourteen healthy volunteers participated in the present study, which deals with the post-exercise facilitatory and/or inhibitory effects of 5 different motor conditions, includin
