[Examination of the causative agent of pityriasis versicolor].

Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a superficial infection of the stratum corneum caused by Malassezia. Eleven species have been recognized within this genus, namely M. globosa, M. restricta, M. sympodiasis, M. furfur, M. obtusa, M. slooffiae, M. pachydermatis, M. dermatis, M. japonica, M. yamatoensis, M. nana. To examine the distribution of the microorganism in the skin of patients with PV, we detected Malassezia species without M. pachydermatis and M. nana using a non-culture-based method that consisted of nested PCR with specific primers. The most frequently isolated species were M. globosa and …

Pityriasis versicolor in the pediatric age group.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a mild chronic infection of the skin caused by Malassezia yeasts. Although it is primarily seen in adults, children are often affected in the tropics . METHODS: Over a period of 2 years, children (up to the age of 14 years) who were clinically and mycologically diagnosed as PV were included in the study. The clinical and epidemiological pattern in different age groups was noted. RESULTS: PV in this age group formed about 31% of the total cases of PV; 4.8% cases presented in infancy. The commonest site of involvement was the face in 39.9% of the cases…

Pityriasis rosea: roles of the dermatology nurse.

Pityriasis rosea, a self-limited exanthematous disease of unknown etiology, is a fairly common exanthem encountered by dermatology nurses and nurse practitioners. Their special roles in diagnosis, symptomatic relief, care for patients with atypical rash, patient education, and counseling are described.

Treatment of pityriasis versicolor in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis versicolor is a common chronic superficial fungal infection of the skin. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine the frequency of visits for pityriasis versicolor and to assess how it is currently being treated. METHODS: Data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care survey were used from the years 1990-1999. RESULTS: There were 2.9 million visits per year in which pityriasis (tinea) versicolor was listed as a diagnosis; this corresponds to a visit rate of 110 visits per 100,000 persons per year. Visit rates varied among racial and ethnic groups, with the…

Pityriasis versicolor on the groin mimicking erythrasma.

Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a widespread dermatomycosis caused by yeasts. Erythrasma is a superficial bacterial skin disease affecting the major folds of the body, particularly the groin. We report the case of a 45-year-old man, affected by PV, exclusively localized in the inguinal folds and in the inner surface of the thighs, characterized by lesions clinically reproducing erythrasma. The authors underline the possibility that PV mimics erythrasma and vice versa, especially in those countries in which both diseases are quite common, and stress the importance of performing a simple mycologic…

Pityriasis alba: a study of pathogenic factors.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of pityriasis alba (PA), a common dermatosis in childhood, is still controversial. The objective of this study was to assess the possible aetiopathogenic factors of this disease in infants. METHODS: Forty-four patients with PA and 31 healthy children were examined and compared. Personal hygiene habits, sun exposure, presence of Staphylococcus aureus in nasal fossae and presence of major or minor signs of atopy were assessed during anamnesis and physical examination. Susceptibility to ultraviolet (UV) B radiation was measured by the onset of a contact hypersensitivity…

Management of seborrheic dermatitis and pityriasis versicolor.

Pityriasis (tinea) versicolor and seborrheic dermatitis are two very common skin diseases. Pityriasis versicolor is a chronic superficial fungal disease usually located on the upper trunk, neck, or upper arms. In pityriasis versicolor, the lipophilic yeast Malassezia (also know as Pityrosporum ovale or P. orbiculare) changes from the blastospore form to the mycelial form under the influence of predisposing factors. The most important exogenous factors are high temperatures and a high relative humidity which probably explain why pityriasis versicolor is more common in the tropics. The most impo…

Pityriasis versicolor with a unique clinical appearance.

We experienced an atypical case of pityriasis versicolor with a unique clinical appearance and undescribed mycological features. Although Malassezia sp. was cultured from the keratotic material, the fungal elements observed in the material were not readily identified as Malassezia. The diagnosis was established with the aid of immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies with the aetiological agent being identified as M. globosa.

Unusual observations in the histology of Pityriasis versicolor.

Histological studies were carried out on 25 patients with various morphological types of pityriasis vesicolor. In addition to the usual features, acanthosis nigricans-like picture in papular lesions, dilated blood vessels in erythematous lesions were observed. In sections stained with Periodic acid Schiff's stain (PAS) absence of granular layer in areas of close approximation of filaments to the stratum malpighii and presence of only mycelia in the vicinity of acrosyringium were found unusual, interesting and are new findings to our knowledge.

A study of pityriasis versicolor in Bangkok (Thailand).

A total of 410 cases of pityriasis versicolor were studied in the Division of Dermatology, Department of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand, during January to December 1987. These comprised 1% of all skin disorders, while infection caused by fungus comprised 17%. Most persons infected with pityriasis versicolor were 12-21 years old (mean age 20 years) and 47% were male and 53% were female. The common sites of infection were back, arms, face and trunk. The colors of lesions found were white (83%), brown (7%), pink (6%) and ashy (4%). Both forms of M. furfur were i…

[Efficacy of fenticonazole in patients with pityriasis versicolor].

Thirty patients suffering from Pityriasis versicolor were treated with fenticonazole in cream or lotion form with two applications a day. At microscopy, Malassezia furfur was encountered in 25 cases and Pityrosporum orbiculare in 5. Disappearance of the yeast was obtained on average in 2 weeks of treatment. Measurement of sebum content with a Sebumeter apparatus did not reveal significant difference (p greater than 0.05) between patients suffering from Pityriasis versicolor and controls and in treated patients, in the course of topical therapy.

Treatment of dermatophytoses and pityriasis versicolor with itraconazole.

Thirty patients (18 males and 12 females) with dermatophytoses were treated with itraconazole. Twenty-eight patients received 100 mg per day for 14 days, and two patients, one with tinea pedis and one with tinea manuum, were treated for 28 days. Thirty patients (11 males and 19 females) with pityriasis versicolor were treated with 200 mg of itraconazole. for five days. Half of the patients received the 200 mg in one dose, and the other half received 100 mg twice a day. Twenty-nine of the 30 patients with dermatophytoses were clinically and mycologically cured, and one patient was improved. All…

Psoralens and ultraviolet A therapy of pityriasis lichenoides.

Three patients with long-standing pityriasis lichenoides, which was resistant to other forms of therapy, were successfully treated with PUVA (psoralens and ultraviolet light of wavelength A). One patient had complete clearing of all lesions, and the other two had marked improvement. PUVA is being used to treat increasing numbers of patients with pityriasis lichenoides, and the results have been very good.

Treatment of pityriasis rosea with UV radiation.

Twenty patients with symptomatic and extensive pityriasis rosea were treated with unilateral UV-B phototherapy in a bilateral comparison study. Five consecutive daily erythemogenic exposures resulted in substantially decreased pruritus and extent of disease greater than that on the untreated side in approximately 50% of the patients. Therapy seems to be most beneficial to patients receiving treatment within the first week of the eruption.
