A case of placental mesenchymal dysplasia.

Placental mesenchymal dysplasia (PMD) rarely complicates with pregnancy. A 30-year-old woman, gravida 3, para 3, presenting with placentomegaly, was referred to our department at 18 weeks of gestation. An ultrasonography revealed a normal fetus with a large multicystic placenta, measuring 125 × 42 × 80 mm. The border between the lesion and normal region was not clear. Color doppler revealed little blood flow in the lesion. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed normal fetus and a large multicystic placenta. Serum human chorionic gonadotropin level was 20124.97 U/L, which was normal at 20 weeks of

Placental Tumour: What could it be?

Placental tumours include placental chorioangiomas, teratomas, haemangiomas, and haematomas. Placental chorioangiomas are benign vascular tumours and are the most common placental tumours, with a prevalence of 1%. Large placental chorioangiomas are rare and may lead to pregnancy complications and poor perinatal outcomes. These complications include fetal anaemia, hydrops fetalis, fetal growth restriction, polyhydramnios, and preterm delivery. We report a case of a large placental chorioangioma, the antenatal management and the maternal and fetal outcomes.

Placentomegaly and placental mesenchymal dysplasia.

A 23-year-old primigravida presented to the labour ward at 37 weeks gestation referred with intrauterine growth restriction, oligohydramnios and placentomegaly. Differential diagnoses of placentomegaly were considered. Her antenatal blood screening tests were normal. There were no fetal malformations. However, triple screen and fetal karyotype were not done as patient presented late in pregnancy. The patient soon went into spontaneous labour and delivered a girl weighing 2.15 kg with a normal Apgar score. The cord was long and twisted; placenta was bulky, 1.7 kg, with prominent grape-like vesi

Seasonal variation in placental abruption.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize seasonal patterns of placental abruption among Jewish and Bedouin parturients in the Southern part of Israel. METHODS: A retrospective population-based study comparing all singleton pregnancies of patients with and without placental abruption was conducted. Deliveries occurred between the years 1988 and 2010. A 'classical' model of time series was used, allowing to assess trend and periodic patterns of placental abruption. RESULTS: During the study period, 241,408 deliveries took place, of which 1685 (0.7%) were complicated with placental abruption. Placental abrup

Placental apoptosis in health and disease.

Apoptosis, programmed cell death, is an essential feature of normal placental development but is exaggerated in association with placental disease. Placental development relies upon effective implantation and invasion of the maternal decidua by the placental trophoblast. In normal pregnancy, trophoblast apoptosis increases with placental growth and advancing gestation. However, apoptosis is notably exaggerated in the pregnancy complications, hydatidiform mole, pre-eclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Placental apoptosis may be initiated by a variety of stimuli, including hypo

Placental site trophoblastic tumor.

When the author received a positive pregnancy test at a time she knew she couldn't possibly be pregnant, it caused her to rethink the healthy skepticism her years of nursing had engendered. This case reminds nurses that positive pregnancy tests can result from medical conditions other than pregnancy, including various cancers, such as placental site trophoblastic tumor, the focus of this article. It also serves as a reminder that any positive pregnancy test that isn't accompanied by corresponding clinical evidence needs to be evaluated further.

[Placental parameters and fetal outcome].

The examination of the placenta may discover the hidden complications of the pregnancy which may give insight into the pathogenesis of neurologic and other developmental disorders. Histologic examinations prove unequivocal associations between placental findings and preterm delivery, stillbirth, neonatal death and hypoxic problems. Few epidemiologic studies have related placental abnormalities to gestational age or adverse outcome of the newborn. In the present review we point the most common placental findings related to clinical data and fetal outcome with implications of placental careful e

Maternal melanoma with placental metastasis.

A 40-year-old woman, a grand multipara with uncertain gestation, presented with severe, prolonged diarrhoea. She was previously diagnosed to have melanoma. Examination revealed gross ascites with hepatosplenomegaly and uterus corresponding to 29 weeks gestation. An emergency caesarean section confirmed widespread metastases to the ovaries, mesentery and placenta. A viable male foetus was delivered with features of intrauterine growth restriction. The baby survived, but the mother died a week later. This case highlights the importance of thoroughly assessing placentas and babies of patients wit

Placental calcification in pseudoxanthoma elasticum.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is an inherited multisystem disorder of the elastic tissue and the objective of this case report is to correlate ultrasonographic and histological appearances of placental calcification in PXE. CLINICAL PICTURE: We report a case of a 37-year-old white woman with PXE, whose antenatal imaging showed a markedly echogenic placenta due to extensive calcification confirmed on postpartum placental histology. OUTCOME: There were no maternal or fetal complications in the antenatal period. A healthy baby of appropriate maturity and weight was delivered via

Cryptosporidium in wild placental mammals.

Cryptosporidium species are common parasites of wild placental mammals. Recent parasitological studies combined with molecular genotyping techniques have been providing valuable new insight into the host specificity and potential transmission of various Cryptosporidium species/genotypes among animals and between these animals and humans. Although Cryptosporidium in wild animals may possess a potential public health problem due to oocyst contamination in the environment, studies at various regions of the world have indicated a strong host-adaptation by these parasites and a limited potential of

Placental site trophoblastic tumor.

Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) is a rare neoplasm that rises from intermediate trophoblasts and commonly presents with low and variable concentration of HCG immunoactivity in serum, which can be difficult to differentiate from early stage choriocarcinoma/gestational trophoblastic neoplasm (GTN) or quiescent gestational trophoblastic disease. PSTT can occur after a normal pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, termination of pregnancy, ectopic or molar pregnancy. There is a wide clinical spectrum of presentation and behavior ranging from a benign condition to an aggressive disease with fat

Recurrence of ischemic placental disease.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that the presence of preeclampsia, small for gestational age (SGA)-birth, and placental abruption in the first pregnancy confers increased risk in the second pregnancy. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study entailing a case-crossover analysis was performed based on women who had two consecutive singleton live births (n=154,810) between 1989 and 1997 in Missouri. Small for gestational age was defined as infants with birth weight below the 10th centile for gestational age. Risk and recurrence of ischemic placental disease was assessed from fitting logistic regr

Placental pathology and cerebral palsy.

Recent classification systems of cerebral palsy call for an assessment of the timing and etiology of brain injury. The placenta is an underused resource for addressing these important questions. An expert assessment of the placental pathology can provide temporally and mechanistically specific data not available from any other source. Key concepts for an understanding of the role of placental pathology are the "sentinel lesion," the high prevalence of thromboinflammatory lesions affecting large fetal placental vessels, the significance of underlying placental reserve, and the realization that

Placental pathology in fetal thrombophilia.

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that placental vascular lesions of the fetal circulation are caused by fetal thrombophilic mutations. The study included 64 newborns of women with one or more of the following pregnancy complications: preeclampsia, placental abruption, and intrauterine growth restriction. The most prevalent inherited thrombophilias--factor V Leiden, factor II (prothrombin) G20210A, and homozygosity for methyltetrahydrofolate reductase C677T--were examined in maternal blood and fetal umbilical cord blood. One pathologist reviewed all of the slides for fetal vascu

Placental site trophoblastic tumor.

Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) is an uncommon form of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) with variable spectrum of clinical behavior. PSTT can occur after a normal pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, termination of pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy or molar pregnancy. Surgery is the primary treatment. Chemotherapy has an established role in loco-regionally advanced and metastatic disease. Many studies indicate that mitotic index is an important prognostic indicator. This article reviews the literature on this rare disease.

[Epidemiology of vascular placental disease].

Placental vascular diseases consist of obstetrical pathologies assumed to be linked to placental ischemia. Preeclampsia, defined as the association of hypertension, proteinuria and edema, occur in 3% of deliveries, in a non-selected population. Eclampsia, defined as the occurrence of convulsions in preeclamptic women, occur in 5 per 10,000 deliveries. Risk factors for preeclampsia are: preeclampsia in the previous pregnancy, maternal age <20 years, multiple pregnancies, and nulliparity. Placenta abruption, defined as premature separation of the placenta before delivery, occur in 5 to 15 per 1,
