Effects of Eu3+ on the metabolism of amino acid and protein in xerophytic Lathyrus sativus L.

The contents of amino acids and proteins and the activity of Na+,K+-ATPase were determined in roots, stems, and leaves of Eu3+-treated Lathyrus sativus L. The results showed that the treatment of Eu3+ made the contents of amino acid and protein and the activity of Na+,K+-ATPase change. The first possible mechanism was that Eu3+ directly made the electric potential of -NH2 or -COOH of amino acid change. The second possible mechanism was that Eu3+ played a role in metallic-activated factors of certain enzymes, which catalyze the catabolism and anabolism of protein. Then, the contents of amino ac

Effects of light regimes and benthic fish disturbance on the foraging behavior of Vallisneria natans in heterogeneous sediments.

In shallow eutrophic lakes, submersed macrophytes are significantly influenced by two main factors: light availability and benthic fish disturbance. Plant foraging is one of the most crucial aspects of plant behavior. The present study was carried out to effects of light regimes and fish disturbance on the foraging behavior of Vallisneria natans in heterogeneous sediments. V. natans was cultivated in heterogeneous sediments with four treatments: high-light regime (H), high-light regime with benthic fish (HF), low-light regime (L), and low-light regime with benthic fish (LF). We use plant trait

Isolation of a wide range of minerals from a thermally treated plant: Equisetum arvense, a Mare's tale.

Silica is the second most abundant biomineral being exceeded in nature only by biogenic CaCO3. Many land plants (such as rice, cereals, cucumber, etc.) deposit silica in significant amounts to reinforce their tissues and as a systematic response to pathogen attack. One of the most ancient species of living vascular plants, Equisetum arvense is also able to take up and accumulate silica in all parts of the plant. Numerous methods have been developed for elimination of the organic material and/or metal ions present in plant material to isolate biogenic silica. However, depending on the chemical

Multi-organ single-cell transcriptomic atlas identifies QrIAA14 as a candidate negative regulator of adventitious root development in Quercus robur.

Plant organ development involves coordinated cell fate transitions across multiple tissues, yet the cellular programs underlying organ-specific differentiation in woody plants remain poorly understood, particularly the mechanisms limiting efficient root development during vegetative propagation of oak species. Here, we generated a comprehensive single-cell transcriptomic landscape of leaf, stem, and root tissues of Quercus robur to resolve developmental trajectories at cellular resolution. A total of 41,471 high-quality cells were classified into 30 distinct clusters, enabling the identificati

Video-rate label-free molecular mapping in living plant tissue with a deployable optical encoder.

Living tissues contain dynamic biochemical information that is difficult to capture with conventional hyperspectral microscopes because sequential spectral acquisition is poorly matched to in vivo molecular processes that evolve during measurement. Here, we introduce a task-specific optical encoding framework for video-rate molecular inference in living plant tissue. The system integrates a passive spectral encoder, implemented here as a low-angle scattering low-density polyethylene (LDPE) layer, into a 22-mm miniaturized probe and learns a supervised mapping from ultraviolet-excited autofluor

A Novel Plant Secondary Metabolite-Binding Gene Family Required for Full Virulence in Pectobacterium parvum.

Pectobacterium parvum is an emerging phytopathogen causing aerial stem rot of potato. P. parvum has a broad host range, with Chinese cabbage as one of its important hosts. Through multi-omics analysis, we discovered a previously uncharacterized gene family highly expressed during in planta infection, designated the plant secondary metabolite-binding (PSMB) family. This family likely originated via horizontal gene transfer and underwent lineage-specific expansion in P. parvum, forming a four-paralog pathogenicity island. Structural modelling revealed that PSMB proteins resemble the rhizobial Rh

Exploring the role of medicinal plants and nanotechnology in the management of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS): a scoping review.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder characterized by heterogeneous symptoms and is commonly managed with conventional medications that often exhibit variable efficacy and undesirable side effects. Given these limitations, nanotechnology, particularly plant-derived metallic nanoparticles, offers novel strategies to enhance phytochemical delivery, stability, and bioavailability. Accordingly, this scoping review synthesizes preclinical evidence (2015-2025) on plant-derived metallic nanoparticles for PCOS, evaluating therapeutic outcomes, safety, and mechanisms. In lin

Sustainable strategy for rehabilitating phosphate mining sites and valorisation of phosphate industry by-products and sludge using pistachio tree (Pistacia atlantica), false pepper (Schinus molle), and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) trees.

The development of anthroposols has been proposed as a new environmentally friendly approach to ensuring the successful revegetation of phosphate mining sites. The phosphate industry's by-products, including phosphogypsum (PG), phosphate sludge (PS), and sewage sludge (SS), can be valuable resources in restoring the ecological balance of mined soil areas. The aim of this study was to safely and sustainably restore the ecological integrity of the phosphate mining site through the evaluation of nutrients and heavy metals dynamics in soil and plant tissues of three tree species and treated by-pro

Lipoxygenase (LOX) in Sweet and Hot Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Fruits during Ripening and under an Enriched Nitric Oxide (NO) Gas Atmosphere.

Lipoxygenases (LOXs) catalyze the insertion of molecular oxygen into polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) such as linoleic and linolenic acids, being the first step in the biosynthesis of a large group of biologically active fatty acid (FA)-derived metabolites collectively named oxylipins. LOXs are involved in multiple functions such as the biosynthesis of jasmonic acid (JA) and volatile molecules related to the aroma and flavor production of plant tissues, among others. Using sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants as a model, LOX activity was assayed by non-denaturing polyacrylamide gel elect

Modulation of Oxidative Stress and Inflammatory Cytokines as Therapeutic Mechanisms of Ocimum americanum L Extract in Carbon Tetrachloride and Acetaminophen-Induced Toxicity in Rats.

Liver diseases have now become a global canker due to increasing drug abuse and several viral infections. The current medicines on the market are woefully inadequate and limited in the application against these diseases. Fortunately, medicinal plants continue to serve as a potential source of drug discovery that could be explored to improve the situation. The present study, therefore, evaluated the hepatoprotective activities of the aqueous extract of various parts (leaves, flower and stem) of Ocimum americanum L on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)- and acetaminophen-induced toxicity in rats. The p

Methods for Assessing the Role of Phloem Transport in Plant Stress Responses.

Delivery of carbohydrates to tissues under stress is important for plant defenses, recovery, and survival. Yet, little is known on how phloem function is altered under stress, and how that influences plant responses to stress. This chapter summarizes current and emerging methods for quantifying phloem transport and assessing how environmental stress affects phloem function at whole plant scale. The techniques discussed range from isotopic and fluorescent tracer studies to advanced non-invasive imaging (MRI, NMR, and PET), carbon balance approaches, anatomical analysis, and stem diameter monito

Heracleum mantegazzianum growth phases and furocoumarin content.

The observation of photocontact dermatitis from Heracleum mantegazzianum Sommier et Levier in 2 gardeners at work prompted the analysis of furocoumarin content of stem, leaves and fruits of the plant during a period of 1 year. Their concentration was found to be maximal in fruit, intermediate in leaf, and minimal in stem. Psoralen was the most prevalent substance in the leaf and bergapten in the fruit. In the stem, in contrast, individual furocoumarins were found in lower but variable concentrations. 3 furocoumarin seasonal peaks were observed in the leaf: the maximal peak occurred in June, th

Influence of exposure time, physicochemical properties, and plant transpiration on the uptake dynamics and translocation of pharmaceutical and personal care products in the aquatic macrophyte Typha latifolia.

Typha latifolia is widely used as a phytoremediation model plant for organic compounds. However, the dynamic uptake and translocation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and their relationship with physicochemical properties, such as lipophilicity (LogKow), ionization behavior (pKa), pH-dependent lipophilicity (LogDow), exposure time and transpiration, are scarcely studied. In the current study, hydroponically grown T. latifolia was exposed to carbamazepine, fluoxetine, gemfibrozil, and triclosan at environmentally relevant concentrations (20 μg/L each). Eighteen out of thirty

The Bacterial Volatile Organic Compound N,N-Dimethylhexadecylamine Induces Long-Lasting Developmental and Immune Responses throughout the Life Cycle of Arabidopsis thaliana.

N,N-dimethylhexadecylamine (DMHDA) is a bacterial volatile organic compound that affects plant growth and morphogenesis and is considered a cross-kingdom signal molecule. Its bioactivity involves crosstalk with the cytokinin and jasmonic acid (JA) pathways to control stem cell niches and induce iron deficiency adaptation and plant defense. In this study, through genetic analysis, we show that the DMHDA-JA-Ethylene (ET) relations determine the magnitude of the defensive response mounted during the infestation of Arabidopsis plants by the pathogenic fungus Botrytis cinerea. The Arabidopsis mutan

Information on forest plant communities of Central Canada collected during 1956-1995.

Over a period of 40 years Paul F. Maycock (1930-2012) and associates surveyed 1391 stands of late-successional, natural forest throughout all vegetation zones of east central Canada, many in parks and remote areas. The group generated an enormous body of detailed quantitative information on forest communities of Ontario and Quebec, subsets of which have figured in various graduate theses and publications, one in a classic paper on southern deciduous forest. Comparable survey information was recorded in all locations through consistent use of the same quantitative field method, the Point-quarte

Phytic Acid as a Functional Nutrient: Unraveling its Role in Type 2 Diabetes Management and Obesity Control.

Herbal medicine, encompassing the use of various plant parts such as leaves, stems, flowers, roots, and seeds, has long been employed to prevent and treat diseases and continues to gain global recognition. Among the diverse bioactive compounds present in plants, phytic acid was traditionally viewed as an antinutrient due to its mineral-binding properties that reduce mineral absorption. However, emerging research has uncovered its significant health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic activities. This review focuses on the therapeutic potential of

Glucose-responsive dynamic hydrogels from Agastache rugosa polysaccharide for diabetic wound healing.

The refractory nature of diabetic wounds stems from persistent hyperglycemia, excessive ROS, and impaired angiogenesis, yet current dressings rely on exogenous factors with bioinactivation and cost limitations. Herein, leveraging the galactose/glucose-rich composition of Agastache rugosa polysaccharide (AP-60-1) bearing cis-vicinal diols, we constructed a dynamic composite hydrogel (CGH) via boronate ester/Schiff base crosslinking, integrating glucose oxidase (GOx) and zinc-humic acid nanoparticles. A key feature is microenvironment-adaptive interfacial enrichment: competitive glucose binding
