The article reports on measurements of D dimer, a terminal plasmic lysis product of crosslinked fibrin, with an enzyme immunoassay (ELISA) employing recently developed specific monoclonal antibodies. Due to its sensitivity the test can be used on plasma samples. This study examines the role of plasma lactoferrin in the assessment of neutropenia. In particular, we have studied lactoferrin as an inhibitor of granulopoiesis and as an indicator of the size of the total blood granulocyte pool (TBGP). Plasma lactoferrin concentration was determined in a heterogeneous group of 30 patients with neutropenia. Plasma prolactin was measured by radioimmunoassay during the luteal phase in 22 patients affected by moderate or severe mastodynia and results were compared to those of 43 control subjects. No consistent changes were seen during the course of the luteal phase in either group. No significant differences were noted between the prolactin levels of the two groups. No association was found between moderate or severe mastodynia and variations of plasma prolactin levels.

Blood plasma contains lipoproteins of which the structure and the composition are not constant during the time and that depend on their metabolic evolution from their synthesis rate in intestine or liver to their utilization in the liver or the peripheral tissues. The composition and the pathway of the different lipoprotein classes (chylomicrons, VLDL, LDL, HDL) are reviewed, as also the main pathological perturbations that attack them.

The binding of ibuprofen to human serum albumin, normal plasma and plasma obtained from rheumatoid arthritic patients was studied using the method of ultracentrifugation. It was found that ibuprofen is more strongly bound to normal plasma than to human serum albumin although this result is probably explained by fatty acid contamination of the human serum albumin. Erythropoietin is a hormone produced by the kidneys and by certain extrarenal tissues and released into the circulation in response to tissue hypoxia. Its study has provided new information about oxygen transport and bone marrow stem cell function and its determination in plasma can give valuable diagnostic clues as to the etiology and pathogenesis of anemias and polycythemias. A method for measuring the unbound fraction of plasma cortisol which is suitable for clinical use is described. It is shown that unless some precise experimental conditions are fulfilled, important errors may result when determining the unbound fraction of the hormone. The assay is practical (2 ml of plasma are necessary) and reproducible (coefficient of variation: 2.7% within the same assay and 3.1% in different assays). Serial radioimmunoassay measurements of plasma oxytocin (OT) in maternal venous blood have been carried out in 15 patients, during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Fetal plasma OT was also measured in the blood from the umbilical vein and umbilical artery. A radioimmunoassay for arginine vasopressin has been developed that is sensitive to the hormone at 1 pg/ml. When plasma was filtered on G-25 Sephadex, immunoreactivity was detected in three regions. Endogenous arginine vasopressin was the third and smallest of the peaks and was recovered just after the salt. By combining gel filtration with immunoassay, we have made precise measurements of arginine vasopressin in a few milliliters of plasma.
