Serous pleural effusions result from increased permeability and changed hydrostatic or colloid osmotic pressure. Laboratory biochemical findings provide conclusions about the effusion compositions. Together with the anamnesis and clinical assessment, they enable the evaluation of the effusion nature. The present study retrospectively analyzed combined biochemical and morphological findings in 2307 effusions of patients from two clinical centers: LungenClinic Grosshansdorf in Germany and Duzce University in Turkey. The effusion cytology results of 1771 and 536 patients from the respective cente

We have measured adenosine deaminase (ADA) in pleural effusions of 95 patients, using a method optimalised for rapid determination on a Hitachi 705 analyzer. High ADA activity was found in four of the five patients with tuberculous pleurisy, in four of the seven with empyema and in three of the seven patients with mesothelioma. One patient with very high serum ADA activity due to liver disease also had a high activity in the pleural effusion. Low activity was found in all patients with other neoplastic pleural effusions, parapneumonic pleural effusions, transudates, and in pleural effusions du

Pleural brushing can be performed under thoracoscopic examination. The combined use of all three methods of diagnosis (macroscopy, biopsy, cytology) achieved optimal diagnostic results. From September 1980 to October 1981 we have performed 150 thoracoscopies for pleural effusions, while the results of conventional pleural cytology and biopsy were negative. In 108 cases pleural brushing and biopsy were both performed. The diagnosis was in 37 cases non malignant disease states associated with effusions and in 71 cases tumoural effusions. Among the 37 cases of non malignant diseases states associ

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is an uncommon tumor with an indolent course and a good prognosis after surgical resection. However, the tumor occasionally follows an unpredictable clinical course and malignant transformation has been reported to increase the rate of local recurrence. Solitary extrathoracic metastasis from solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is an uncommon finding.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this case report we present the first case of a synchronous single pulmonary and pancreatic metastasis treated with minimally invasive surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Pancreatic rec

OBJECTIVE: To assess factors associated with increased pleural fluid and air evacuation, longer duration of thoracostomy tube usage, and longer hospitalization in dogs and cats following surgery for thoracic neoplasms.
ANIMALS: 62 dogs and 10 cats.
METHODS: Medical records were reviewed for dogs and cats undergoing thoracic surgeries between August 1, 2019, and June 30, 2023, for resection of suspected neoplasia in which a thoracostomy tube was placed. Data collected included patient signalment, type of procedure performed, histologic diagnosis of the primary mass removed, volume of fluid an

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Primary tumors of the pleura are rare, with malignant mesothelioma being the most common of these neoplasms. Pathological diagnosis of sarcomatoid mesothelioma can be more challenging than that of epithelioid malignant mesothelioma because of its similarities with true sarcomas and restricted or inconsistent expression of mesothelial markers in immunohistochemistry analysis.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: Here, we present an unusual case of malignant pleural mesothelioma concomitant with lung adenocarcinoma in a 72-year-old Japanese man, a smoker with no family history of

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare malignant pathological findings, accounting for only 5% of all pleural neoplasms. Clinical manifestations are very unspecific and over 50% of the cases are asymptomatic. The commonest clinical symptoms include cough, pains, dyspnoea, fever and weight loss. The recommended diagnostic methods include chest x-ray, CT and MRI imaging and positrone emission tomography. The CT-assissted puction biopsy yield is less than 50%. The authors present a case review of a 58-year-old female with a history of dyspnoea. Her chest x-ray and CT examination suggested…

OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case of synchronous cancer consisting of ovarian endometrioid adenocarcinoma and endocervical mucinous adenocarcinoma. Related literature was reviewed and it appeared that no similar case had been reported previously.
CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old (gravida 1, para 1, abortus 0) woman complained of abdominal fullness, chest tightness and dyspnea on exertion of several days' duration. Gynecologic sonography showed a right complex adnexal cyst, 16 x 14 cm in size. Computed tomography showed an 18 x 16 cm right pelvic tumor, with both cystic and solid components, ascites

Solitary fibrous tumors of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are rarely encountered in clinical practice. These are unusual mesenchymal tumours initially described as primary spindle-cell neoplasms. Such tumours may manifest in pleural and extrapleural sites such as the liver, parapharyngeal space, sublingual and parotid glands, and thyroid but are seldom described in the nose and paranasal sinus region. Erosion of adjacent structures may occur, but the tumour itself does not metastasise. A young patient presented with a progressive unilateral nasal mass. The initial nasal biopsy reported

Pulmonary artery sarcoma is an uncommon neoplasm, and its clinical and radiological presentation usually simulates chronic thromboembolic disease. We present the case of a 77-year-old woman admitted with dyspnea, chest pain, and hemoptysis. A chest computed tomographic scan showed moderate right-sided pleural effusion and a saccular dilatation of the interlobar portion of the right pulmonary artery, which was filled with contrast and surrounded by an irregular soft-tissue attenuation mass, suggesting a ruptured pulmonary artery aneurysm. The patient was operated on. Intraoperatively, a pseudoa

Rounded atelectasis is an uncommon but increasingly recognized form of pulmonary collapse that often mimics a pulmonary neoplasm. It is suggested that these lesions can occur many years after exposure to asbestos or exudative pleural effusions. The authors report 16 cases of rounded atelectasis seen during a period of over 10 years, 9 of which in the last 18 months. They describe the plain film, tomographic and CT appearances of the lesion. The radiographic features that allow a diagnosis are rounded or oval shadows lying along the posterior surface of the lower lobe, adjacent to thickened ple

Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) can occur in nearly all types of malignant tumors, with lung cancer being the most prevalent cause. The presence of MPE indicates an advanced stage or distant spread of the tumor, significantly reducing the patient's life expectancy. Particularly, a substantial amount of pleural effusion can impede heart and lung function, impair blood oxygen perfusion levels in the body, and greatly diminish patients' quality of life. Even when systemic treatment has alleviated the primary lung tumor in some patients, effective control over MPE remains challenging and impacts

The cytomorphology of MPNST in effusion specimens is rarely described. In this paper, the detailed cytopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of metastatic MPNST has been described in pleural effusion. Patients' medical history and the judicious utilization of ancillary studies contribute to ensure precise cytological diagnoses. The cytomorphology of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) in effusion specimens can be diagnostically challenging. The author presents detailed cytopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of a case of metastatic MPNST in pleural

A middle-aged female with history of multinodular goiter, Hashimoto disease, and chronic vitamin B12 deficiency presented with palpitations and subsequent exertional dyspnea. Initial radiographic analysis suggested mediastinal cavernous hemangioma, but biopsy showed features consistent with pleural hemangioma. Pleural hemangioma should be considered among the differential diagnoses for recurrent unilateral pleural effusion. Pleural hemangioma should be distinguished from other more common entities including the similarly benign pulmonary hemangioma and the more aggressive pleural hemangioendot

Although infectious, inflammatory and neoplastic diseases frequently involve the pleural space and walls, little is known about the immunological and molecular mechanisms underlying pleural disorders. This article provides an overview of recent insights into immunobiological processes likely to play a role in the pathogenesis of pleural disorders. Pleural involvement in certain diseases is associated with the infiltration of a number of different types of immune cells, such as neutrophils, eosinophils or lymphocytes, in various proportions depending on both the course and the aetiology of the
