Although mechanical compression of the optic nerve by a dilated and/or tortuous sclerotic intracranial internal carotid artery is occasionally reported as an etiology for impairment of vision and visual field, early diagnosis of such condition has been hampered by the lack of characteristic neuro-ophthalmological and neuroradiological findings. The review of 35 previously reported cases (60 eyes) including ours showed that 41% out of the 34 operated eyes were improved neurologically by the decompressive procedure, while it was in 27% out of the 26 undecompressed or non-operated eyes. These uns

Neuroradiological studies have consistently demonstrated that alcoholics have morphological abnormalities of cortical, ventricular, and cerebellar structures suggesting brain atrophy. This atrophy is weakly correlated with impaired psychological test performance. Because brain atrophy and intellectual impairment can also be found in normal aging it is necessary to compare alcoholics with age-matched control subjects. It is currently unknown if alcohol-associated brain atrophy and intellectual impairment are the result of conditions preceding alcohol consumption or conditions only indirectly re

Two patients with the combination of bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia and diabetes insipidus are reported. One patient also had absence of the septum pellucidum (septo-optic dysplasia), which previously has been associated primarily with abnormalities of anterior pituitary function.

During simultaneous testing of electro-encephalograms and pneumoencephalograms in 200 children of various ages a proven correlation of statistics between both test procedures emerged as a well-defined parameter for evaluation. When making a statement about the correlation in findings between E.E.G. and P.E.G. the age of development in a child must be taken into consideration. Thus it emerged that in infants pronounced enlargement of the ventricular system correlates with active tension E.E.G. at increased inter-cranial pressure, while the coincidence of focal changes in E.E.G. and P.E.G. with

A series of 55 cases is described in which hydrocephalus associated with non-neoplastic narrowing of the Sylvian aqueduct produced symptoms for the first time in adult life. The clinical features of the patients and their investigation are described and discussed.

We describe a patient with an intraspinal paraganglioma who presented with normal pressure hydrocephalus. A 70-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of gait disturbance and cognitive dysfunction. Computed tomography of the brain and magnetic resonance imaging of the spine revealed communicating hydrocephalus and a spinal mass at the T12-L1 level which proved to be a paraganglioma of the filum terminale. Radioisotope cisternography revealed a severe delay in cerebrospinal fluid circulation. Symptoms related to communicating hydrocephalus resolved after tumor resection.

Although a probable initial diagnosis may be suggested by computed cranial tomography, the diagnostic accuracy is often increased by the complementary use of other neuroradiologic studies. The use of CT scanning is conjunction with other more invasive neuroradiological studies results in improved diagnosis and patient management in almost the entire spectrum of neurosurgical diseases-- subarachnoid hemorrhage due to aneurysm, stroke, trauma, normal pressure hydrocephalus, and especially neoplasms.
