Several groups of cases of fasciitis and myositis with eosinophilia are reported. The common features are inflammation into fascia and/or pe … cases) with myalgias, or localized (2 cases). Other cases are focal myositis or multiple myositis, polymyositis with eosinophilia. The relationship among these cases is discussed. There is a continuum among the different groups. The pathophysiology remains unknown.

An additional disorder in the spectrum of thyroid related muscle disease is presented. Hypothyroid and hyperthyroid disease are both associated with a variety of muscle abnormalities, from myalgias to myopathy. Thirty-two patients with adult-onset polymyositis uncomplicated by cancer or systemic connective tissue disease were studied. Muscle biopsy specimens were examined with direct immunofluorescence microscopy and results were compared with those in 94 control subjects. Sarcolemmal and sarcoplasmic staining were observed in both groups and considered to be nonspecific. Pediatric polymyositis may be an entity distinct from dermatomyositis. Chronic polymyositis can occur in childhood and, as in adults, may be associated with arrhythmias. Microscopical involvement of the myocardium and pericardium in dermatomyositis is probably far more common than suspected on clinical grounds. A case-control epidemiologic study of childhood polymyositis is presented. Parents of 42 cases of childhood polymyositis were interviewed along with parents of controls matched for sex and age. Extensive review of past medical history, animal exposure history, residential and family history, and immunization history failed to reveal any significant differences between the two groups. The only suggestive difference was exposure to bacteriologically confirmed streptococcal diseases in 20 cases as compared to 13 controls.

Hyperprolactinemia has been related to autoimmune diseases. Herein, we describe a case of a female with a prolactin producer pituitary macroadenoma who developed severe polymyositis one month after its removal. The patient had very high levels of CPK and muscle biopsy showed remarkable inflammatory infiltration. Steroid therapy was followed with total recovery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case reported of acute polymyositis after pituitary macroadenoma exeresis.

Statins are an extensively used class of drugs, and myopathy is an uncommon, but well-described side effect of statin therapy. Inflammatory myopathies, including polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and necrotizing autoimmune myopathy, are even more rare, but debilitating, side effects of statin therapy that are characterized by the persistence of symptoms even after discontinuation of the drug.
