Small mammalian herbivores at moderate densities facilitate livestock growth by improving vegetation composition in grasslands.

Small mammals and large herbivores have co-evolved in grasslands for millions of years, yet how they interact remains unclear. Although large herbivores can significantly affect the smaller ones, the reverse effect is largely unknown. On the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, plateau pikas (Ochotona curzoniae) are often considered pests that compete with livestock at high densities. Using field experiments, we show that the presence of pikas facilitates weight gains of yaks (Bos grunniens) by improving vegetation composition at a moderate density level. Compared to the pika-present treatment, pika remov

DRIFteRS: A dataset of drift invertebrate densities in streams and rivers across western North America, 1997-2024.

Prey availability is among the most influential and highly variable determinants of fish growth and freshwater habitat carrying capacity, yet it remains understudied compared to physical habitat variables (Ouellet et al., 2025; Rosenfeld et al., 2014; Weber et al., 2017). We often lack a clear understanding of how much food is available to fishes, how it varies spatially and temporally, and how it influences responses to restoration (Ouellet et al., 2025; Rossi et al., 2024; Wipfli et al., 2010). Drift invertebrates-the primary food source for juvenile salmonids and other drift-foraging fishes

Field abundance and spatial patterns of ear-feeding insect pests in relation to levels of defective kernels in processing sweet corn.

In this study, we investigated the within-field distribution of sweet corn insect pests in relation to adjacent habitats and determined the level and specific causes of defective kernels affecting the quality of the final product at the processing cannery. Sap beetles [primarily Carpophilus lugubris (Murray, 1864) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae)] and stink bugs [primarily Euschistus servus (Say) ((Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)] infested 27.6% and 73.6% of the fields, respectively. Densities of stink bugs were highest along field edges adjacent to wheat, soybean, vegetable crops, and woodlots. Levels of

Spatial distribution and environmental correlations of Culex pipiens pallens (Diptera: Culicidae) in Haidian district, Beijing.

Culex pipiens pallens Coquillett, 1898 (Diptera: Culicidae) was the dominant health threat to mosquito species in Beijing, and it is important to unravel the spatial distribution and environmental correlations of Cx. pipiens pallens in Beijing. 3S technology methods and spatial statistics were used to clarify the distribution pattern. Subsequently, linear and spatial regression were performed to detect the environmental factors linked with the density of Cx. pipiens pallens. The same "middle peak" spatial distribution pattern was observed for Cx. pipiens pallens density at the community, subdi

Cascading impacts of overstory structure in managed forests on understory structure, microclimate conditions, and Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) densities.

Forest management practices designed to meet varied landowner objectives affect wildlife habitat and may interrupt the life-cycle stages of disease vectors, including the black-legged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae). Ixodes scapularis transmits multiple pathogens including Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, which is the most common tick-borne disease in the United States. There is evidence that a range of active forest management practices (e.g., invasive plant removal, prescribed burning) can alter tick densities and pathogen transmission. However, few st

Monitoring insect numbers and biodiversity with a vertical-beam entomological radar.

Concerns about perceived widespread declines in insect numbers have led to recognition of a requirement for long-term monitoring of insect biodiversity. Here we examine whether an existing, radar-based, insect monitoring system developed for research on insect migration could be adapted to this role. The radar detects individual larger (greater than 10 mg) insects flying at heights of 150-2550 m and estimates their size and mass. It operates automatically and almost continuously through both day and night. Accumulation of data over a 'half-month' (approx. 15 days) averages out weather effects

Influence of temperature on the population size of Aceria litchii (Acari: Eriophyidae) and the development of its galls.

The lychee erinose mite, Aceria litchii (Keifer), is a tiny eriophyid mite known to induce the formation of open galls (erinea) on lychee plants, Litchi chinensis Sonn. In lychee infested by A. litchii, four stages of erineum are observed, based on erineum color: hyaline, white, amber and dark brown. The cause of the color change in erinea is unknown, but it might be linked to the extent of A. litchii infestation. Artificially infested lychee seedlings were used to determine the developmental time, trichome density, and mite population size in each of the four erineum stages. The effect of tem

The incidence of tuberculous pleurisy in mainland China from 2005 to 2018.

BACKGROUND: Currently, tuberculous pleurisy (TP) remains a serious problem affecting global public health, including in China. Our purpose w … ally influential factors on TP incidences, such as medical expenses per capita, GDP per capita, and population density, were assessed using the Spearman correlation coefficient. RESULTS: The incidence of TP increased in mainland China from 2005 to 2018, with a mean incidence of 2.5 per 100,000 population. Interestingly, spring was the peak season for TP, with more …

Assessing the Repeatability of Tick Dragging as a Method for Ixodes scapularis Surveillance.

Tick dragging is an important tool used by public health for Ixodes scapularis surveillance to identify Lyme disease risk areas in Ontario, Canada. Concerns have been raised on the repeatability of tick dragging due to fluctuations that occur in the tick population in response to micro- and macroclimatic variations. Our objective was to assess the repeatability of tick dragging over a short timescale by examining three outcome measures: presence/absence of ticks, tick abundance, and likelihood of tick establishment based on an indicator developed by Clow et al. ( 2018 ). We conducted tick drag

Phosphorus resource partitioning shapes phosphorus acquisition and plant species abundance in grasslands.

Species diversity is commonly hypothesized to result from trade-offs for different limiting resources, providing separate niches for coexisting species1-4. As soil nutrients occur in multiple chemical forms, plant differences in acquisition of the same element derived from different compounds may represent unique niche dimensions5,6. Because plant productivity of ecosystems is often limited by phosphorus7, and because plants have evolved diverse adaptations to acquire soil phosphorus6,8, a promising yet untested hypothesis is phosphorus resource partitioning6,9,10. Here, we provided two differ

Density and Biomass Estimates by Removal for an Amazonian Crocodilian, Paleosuchus palpebrosus.

Direct counts of crocodilians are rarely feasible and it is difficult to meet the assumptions of mark-recapture methods for most species in most habitats. Catch-out experiments are also usually not logistically or morally justifiable because it would be necessary to destroy the habitat in order to be confident that most individuals had been captured. We took advantage of the draining and filling of a large area of flooded forest during the building of the Santo Antônio dam on the Madeira River to obtain accurate estimates of the density and biomass of Paleosuchus palpebrosus. The density, 28.4

Estimation of the density of nymphs of the bush tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis (Acari: Ixodidae), by the catch effort method.

The density of nymphs of the bush tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, was investigated by the catch effort method with flagging. The spatial distribution of H. longicornis nymphs fit the model of contagiously distributed colonies by Iwao's m*-m analysis (Iwao 1968). A sequential sampling method was used to predict the theoretical point at which to stop sampling. Our analysis showed that five quadrats (4 m x 4 m) were sufficient to estimate the density of H. longicornis nymphs with a mean density of 5.39 per quadrat. We estimated the tick density by two methods with respect to the sampling interva

Studies on myiasis producing flies collected by bait traps at Al Marg (Qalyobia Governorate), Egypt.

Myiasis is a real welfare problem. As a disease, it affects man and animals. In a study of myiasis producing flies in Al Marg District, sixteen species of dipterous flies were trapped. The predominant species was Musca domestica followed by Lueilia sericata and the least abundance was Wohlfahrtia magnifica. The overall abundance was in Summer followed by Spring and the least was in Winter. The most attractive bait was liver for members of family Calliphoridae and meat for members of family Muscidae and Family Sarcophagidae.

Albinism and its inheritance in populations of the montane vole.

Albinism was observed in natural populations of the montane vole, Microtus montanus nanus, in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. Two individuals, apparently littermates, were captured in a high density population in 1976, and a third was taken at the same site from a high density population one year later. Laboratory breeding tests established that albinism in this species is inherited as an autosomal homozygous recessive. Territorial polygyny and the occurrence of extended maternal families at high densities may result in significant amounts of inbreeding as evidenced by presumably maladapti

Altitudinal patterns of Diptera richness and density in streams: a scientometric approach.

Environmental changes along altitudinal gradients strongly influence the distribution of aquatic insects. We conducted a scientometric review to assess the impact of altitude on Diptera communities, with a particular focus on Chironomidae and Simuliidae. Articles published until 2025 were retrieved from Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO using multilingual (English, Spanish, and Portuguese) search strings combining insect groups (Diptera, Chironomidae, or Simuliidae), altitudinal terms (altitude or elevation), and freshwater habitat descriptors (river, stream, lotic, or freshwater). After scre

Wildfire impacts on Spanish municipal population.

This paper analyzes the impact that different kinds of wildfires exert on population size of Spanish municipalities covering the 1986-2015 period, using recent developments in difference-in-differences estimation methods. The goal of the methodology is dealing with different wildfire events on several municipalities by considering as the initial time the first wildfire for all of them. Qualitative and quantitative effects are analyzed. Severity is measured as qualitative indicator by two ways. First, as major agricultural areas affected by dividing the sample in four quartiles according to the

The female advantage in natural populations of gynodioecious Plantago coronopus: seed quantity vs. offspring quality.

In gynodioecious plant species, females can only persist when they have a reproductive advantage in comparison with hermaphrodites. However, several studies have shown that females do not necessarily produce more seeds than hermaphrodites, since seed production can be affected by population characteristics, such as female frequency or population size. The aim of this study was to quantify the female advantage across a large number of natural populations, examine its relationship with population sex ratio and size, and to assess the role of competition on the magnitude of the female advantage.
