Antibody levels to the class I and II epitopes of the M protein and myosin are related to group A streptococcal exposure in endemic populations.

Rheumatic fever (RF)/rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis are thought to be autoimmune diseases, and follow group A streptococcal (GAS) infection. Different GAS M types have been associated with rheumatogenicity or nephritogenicity and categorized into either of two distinct classes (I or II) based on amino acid sequences present within the repeat region ('C' repeats) of the M protein. Sera from ARF patients have previously been shown to contain elevated levels of antibodies to the class I-specific epitope and myosin with the class I-specific antibodies also

Higher risk for acute childhood lymphoblastic leukaemia in Swedish population centres 1973-94. Swedish Child Leukaemia Group.

A population-based sample of acute childhood leukaemia cases in Sweden 1973-94 was analysed by a geographical information system (GIS) for spatial leukaemia distribution in relation to population density. The annual incidence rate for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) was 3.6, and for acute non-lymphoblastic leukaemia (ANLL) 0.7, cases per 100,000 children. Incidence rates in population centres, constituting 1.3% of Sweden's land area and approximately 80% of the population, compared with the rest of Sweden showed a statistically significant excess of ALL [odds ratio (OR) 1.68; 95% confidenc

Geographic variability of hemophilia-associated AIDS in the United States: effect of population characteristics. Hemophilia-Associated AIDS Study Group.

National AIDS surveillance suggests that approximately 3.5% of all hemophilic patients in the United States have developed AIDS as of February 1988; however, the cumulative incidence of AIDS among seropositive patients at individual hemophilia treatment centers (HTCs) has been reported to be as high as 12%. The purpose of this study was to examine the reported excess risk of AIDS at selected HTCs. Between July 13 and November 6, 1987, we reviewed medical charts from the 598 hemophilia A and hemophilia B patients receiving comprehensive care as of 1980 at six U.S. hemophilia treatment centers (

Meta-analysis comparing diabetes in pregnancy study group India (DIPSI) vs the international association of the diabetes and pregnancy study groups (IADPSG) criteria for diagnosis of gestational diabetes among Indian population.

Despite consensus on universal screening of women at 24-28 weeks for a diagnosis of gestational diabetes, controversy remains on an appropriate criterion. The study is aimed to find out the sensitivity and specificity of Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group India (DIPSI) criteria compared to the International Association of the Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) criteria for diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). A meta-analysis of studies comparing DIPSI as an index test to IADPSG as the reference test for diagnosing GDM was carried out. A total of 8 comparative studies were

ABO and Rho(D) blood groups in IMSS population in the State of Nuevo León (estimation of simple and double incompatibility frequency in married couples and their offspring).

ABO and Rho (D) blood groups were studied in 61,023 people receiving medical care at the medical units or blood banks of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social in the metropolitan area in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León, so as to determine the genetical inheritance patterns that control these blood antigens, and that were used in the stimation of ABO and Rho (D) incompatibility in married couples and in births with maternal fetal incompatibility. It was found that IMSS populations, regardless of the medical units, can be considered as part of the same one and are different to those observe

Diagnosis of Xeroderma Pigmentosum Groups A and C by Detection of Two Prevalent Mutations in West Algerian Population: A Rapid Genotyping Tool for the Frequent XPC Mutation c.1643_1644delTG.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. Considering that XP patients have a defect of the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway which enables them to repair DNA damage caused by UV light, they have an increased risk of developing skin and eyes cancers. In the present study, we investigated the involvement of the prevalent XPA and XPC genes mutations-nonsense mutation (c.682C>T, p.Arg228X) and a two-base-pair (2 bp) deletion (c.1643_1644delTG or p.Val548Ala fsX25), respectively-in 19 index cases from 19 unrelated families in the West of Algeria. Demonstrating the use of population level data to investigate trends in the rate, radiation dose and cost of Computed Tomography across clinical groups: Are there any areas of concern?

INTRODUCTION: Increases in computed tomography (CT) use may not always reflect clinical need or improve outcomes. This study aimed to demonstrate how population level data can be used to identify variations in care between patient groups, by analysing system-level changes in CT use around the diagnosis of new conditions. METHODS: Retrospective repeated cross-sectional observational study using West Australian linked administrative records, including 504,723 adults diagnosed with different conditions in 2006, 2012 and 2015. For 90 days pre/post diagnosis, CT use (any and 2+ scans), effective d

Distribution of maternal age and birth order groups in cases with unclassified multiple congenital abnormalities according to the number of component abnormalities: a national population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple congenital abnormalities are caused by chromosomal aberrations, mutant major genes and teratogens. A minor proportion of these patients are identified as syndromes but the major part belonging to the group of unclassified multiple CAs (UMCAs). The main objective of this study was to evaluate the maternal age and birth order in pregnant women who had offspring affected with UMCA. The strong association between numerical chromosomal aberrations, e.g., Down syndrome and advanced maternal age is well-known and tested here. METHODS: The Hungarian Case-Control Surveillance of C

Polymorphisms of the DNA repair gene xeroderma pigmentosum groups A and C and risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma in a population of high incidence region of North China.

AIM: Inherited polymorphisms of DNA repair genes may contribute to variations in DNA repair capacity (DRC) and genetic susceptibility to different cancers. The aim of this study was to determine whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of xeroderma pigmentosum group A (XPA) and XPC can influence the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). METHODS: In this report, one SNP of XPA and three SNPs of XPC were genotyped by polymerase-chain reaction (PCR) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay in 327 ESCC patients and 612 healthy controls in a high inciden

Advancing the inclusion of pregnant and lactating populations in HIV PrEP research: ethical, regulatory, and surveillance recommendations from a multisectoral working group.

Despite a 60% decline in new HIV infections since 1995, significant challenges persist. In 2023, 1.3 million new HIV infections occurred, with 645,500 in sub-Saharan Africa, where cisgender adolescent girls and women represent over two-thirds of new cases. Approximately one-quarter of vertical HIV transmissions are linked to infections during pregnancy and lactation, yet data on PrEP use in these populations remains generally limited due to their exclusion from clinical trials, despite a recent movement toward inclusion, such as in the PURPOSE 1 trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of len

Efficacy of auditory gamma stimulation for cognitive decline: a systematic review of individual and group differences across cognitively impaired and healthy populations.

Auditory gamma stimulation is a promising non-invasive neuromodulation technique for cognitive decline, with preclinical studies demonstrating therapeutic effects in Alzheimer's disease models. However, translating these findings into human trials has produced variable outcomes, suggesting a need to examine factors influencing efficacy. In a systematic review of 62 studies on healthy and cognitively impaired populations, we identified 16 characteristics that may affect the response to stimulation. Outcomes reported included improved cognition, slower progression of brain atrophy, and changes i

Genomic cluster formation among invasive group A streptococcal infections in the USA: a whole-genome sequencing and population-based surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: Clusters of invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infection, linked to genomically closely related group A streptococcal (GAS) isolates (referred to as genomic clusters), pose public health threats, and are increasingly identified through whole-genome sequencing (WGS) analysis. In this study, we aimed to assess the risk of genomic cluster formation among iGAS cases not already part of existing genomic clusters. METHODS: In this WGS and population-based surveillance study, we analysed iGAS case isolates from the Active Bacterial Core surveillance (ABCs), which is part of the US Cen

The position statement of the Working Group of the Polish Psychiatric Association on the use of D2/D3 dopamine receptor partial agonists in special populations.

D2/D3 dopamine receptor partial agonists (aripiprazole, brexpiprazole, cariprazine) are increasingly often used in the treatment of mental disorders due to a more favourable tolerability profile as compared to other antipsychotics. The article presents the position statement on the use of these drugs in the treatment of special populations: people with comorbid somatic diseases, people over 65 years of age, including those with dementia, children and adolescents, pregnant and breastfeeding women. The position statement was developed by the panel of experts appointedby the Executive Board of th
