Preserving bone in cancers of the elderly: A necessity.

The occurrence of bone fractures is frequent in the elderly population, and in cancer patients, especially with bone metastases. The growing incidence of cancer associated with an aging population implies important health challenges, including bone health. Decisions on cancer care in older adults have to take into account older adults' specificities. Screening tools as G8 or VES 13 and evaluating tools as comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) do not include bone-related items. Bone risk assessment is indicated according to identification of geriatric syndromes such as falls, history, and th

The extent and nature of dental anxiety in Australians experiencing homelessness.

High dental anxiety is a major barrier to accessing dental care and has been found to be experienced to a greater extent in the homeless population. No studies have investigated the extent and nature of dental anxiety in Australians experiencing homelessness and was the aim of this study. Participants were recruited from four not-for-profit organisations in inner Brisbane using convenience and snowball sampling. The Dental Anxiety Questionnaire (DAQ) and the Index of Dental Anxiety and Fear (IDAF-4C+ ) questionnaire and oral health screening were completed by people experiencing homelessness i

Profile and quality of life of the older Moroccan population: a scoping review of associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Morocco’s rapidly growing older adult population poses major care challenges. This demographic shift requires a proactive response from the government and health authorities. They should adopt strategies focused on chronic disease prevention, co-morbidity, and the management of geriatric syndromes. This study describes this population’s socio-demographic, economic and health profile. The study aims to identify factors associated with their quality of life through a scoping review. METHODS: The study is based on the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The databases used to identify relevant arti

Health care and illness in Lihir, New Ireland Province, in the context of the development of the Lihir gold mine.

During 2000 a review of health care and illness in Lihir, New Ireland Province, was carried out while I was employed as a Community Health Research Officer with the Lihir Management Company, the manager of a gold mine on Lihir. The review aim was to document the health care providers for the local population and the illness burden suffered by Lihirians, and then to shape services to have a more preventive emphasis. It was discovered that the health care services available were well utilized by Lihirians. Health care was provided by the church, government and the mining company, and needed bett

Update on Bone Health in Pediatric Chronic Disease.

Children and adolescents with chronic disease are predisposed to impaired bone health. Pediatric illness, including type 1 diabetes mellitus, celiac disease, and cystic fibrosis, have significant risk of low bone mineralization and fracture due to underlying inflammation, malabsorption, lack of physical activity, and delayed puberty. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry is the primary imaging method to assess bone health in this population. The purpose of this review is to update readers about the assessment and management of bone health in children with common pediatric chronic illnesses and revi

Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on SCUBA diving experience in marine protected areas.

UNLABELLED: Faced with the need for isolation of most people to reduce the transmission of COVID-19, a great concern for the well-being of the population has resurfaced. Considering the numerous benefits of outdoor activities to human health and well-being, we assessed whether the quality of the experience of recreational divers in a marine protected area (MPA) was impacted during the pandemic. We applied a semi-structured questionnaire to divers, collected their socioeconomic profile, preferences, motivations, experiences, and compared the results with those obtained in the previous season. State of the art of mobile health technologies use in clinical arrhythmia care.

The rapid growth in consumer-facing mobile and sensor technologies has created tremendous opportunities for patient-driven personalized health management. The diagnosis and management of cardiac arrhythmias are particularly well suited to benefit from these easily accessible consumer health technologies. In particular, smartphone-based and wrist-worn wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG) technology can facilitate relatively inexpensive, long-term rhythm monitoring. Here we review the practical utility of the currently available and emerging mobile health technologies

Future Challenges and Opportunities for the Viability of Animal Populations in Zoos and Aquariums.

Maintaining sustainable animal populations is fundamental to zoo and aquarium missions in education, visitor engagement, entertainment, scientific advancement, public health and wellbeing, advocacy, and conservation impact. Yet, sustaining viable populations remains a persistent challenge. Small populations are inherently vulnerable to demographic and genetic challenges which threaten both individual animal welfare and population-level goals. However, as emerging research advances our understanding of population biology, zoos and aquariums are positioned to transform how we sustain ex situ pop

Effectiveness of digital health technologies for post-discharge follow-up and management in older adults: a systematic review.

Older adults (≥65 years) are a rapidly growing population that are experiencing a higher number of hospitalisation admissions, longer hospital stays, and greater hospitalisation-related costs than younger adults. There is an important gap in post-discharge care for older adults, and digital technologies, such as video visits, mobile health apps, and remote patient monitoring, may support follow-up and management after hospital discharge. This systematic review examined the effectiveness, feasibility, acceptability, and impact (ie, effects on rehospitalisation, quality of life, mental health, a

Disparities in peripheral artery disease care: A review and call for action.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD), the pathophysiologic narrowing of arterial blood vessels of the lower leg due to atherosclerosis, is a highly prevalent disease that affects more than 6 million individuals 40 years and older in the United States, with sharp increases in prevalence with age. Morbidity and mortality rates in patients with PAD range from 30% to 70% during the 5- to 15-year period after diagnosis and PAD is associated with poor health outcomes and reduced functionality and quality of life. Despite advances in medical, endovascular, and open surgical techniques, there is striking v

The current and future treatment of edentulism.

The purpose of this review and summary is to focus the clinician's attention on existing potential limitations regarding the management of edentulism. The current published data and opinions concerning the need for treating edentulism, the quality of dentures, related morbidity, and alternative or related therapeutics (e.g., dental implants) suggest there are opportunities for improvement in the treatment of the edentulous population. This may be achieved by adopting a broader therapeutic strategy focused not solely on technical aspects of an oral prosthesis. Instead, a wider array of clinical

[Prevention of falls and their consequences].

UNLABELLED: FREQUENCY AND SEVERITY: Approximately 30% of all elderly subjects experience a fall at least once a year. Hip fractures is the most severe consequence. PREVENTIVE MEASURES: The prevention of falls and hip fractures implies different strategies depending on the population concerned. For most all older subjects in good general health, one of the important risk factors is an abnormal single-leg stance which can reveal equilibrium disorders. For more frail subjects (20% of the elderly population), all factors must be considered, including, sarcopenia, nutritional status, and cognitive

Impact of the POPulation Medicine Multimorbidity Intervention in Xishui County (POPMIX) on people at high risk for COPD who smoke: protocol for the POPMIX-Smoking cluster randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use is a major contributor to the burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other non-communicable diseases in China. People at high risk for COPD who smoke, particularly those with pre-existing chronic conditions, often remain underserved by conventional smoking cessation programmes. Population medicine offers a promising framework for proactively identifying high-burden diseases, managing multimorbidity and prioritising interventions for vulnerable populations. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol describes a stratified, two-arm cluster randomised contr

Implementation of primary care clinical pharmacy services for adults experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that on any given night in the United States, more than half a million individuals experience homelessness. Within the homeless population, chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and human immunodeficiency virus are found at rates 3-6 times higher than in the general population. Despite this, access to appropriate treatment and preventive care remains difficult for those experiencing homelessness, and many barriers exist to achieving positive health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to determine the clinical impact and sustai

Pandemics, policy, and the power of paradigm: will COVID-19 lead to a new scientific revolution?

Critical historical analysis of the 19th-century cholera and 21st-century coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemics suggests that in conflicts over pandemic-mitigation policies, the professional backgrounds of principal opponents reveal dominant and minority scientific paradigms, presaging possible epistemological shifts. Epistemic conflict over cholera helped spur biomedical expertise as the dominant paradigm for U.S. public health science and policy beginning in the 20th century. This paradigm was reflected in federal government reliance on infectious disease physicians as the primary scientific d

Real-world data for precision public health of noncommunicable diseases: a scoping review.

BackgroundGlobal public health action to address noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) requires new approaches. NCDs are primarily prevented and managed in the community where there is little investment in digital health systems and analytics; this has created a data chasm and relatively silent burden of disease. The nascent but rapidly emerging area of precision public health offers exciting new opportunities to transform our approach to NCD prevention. Precision public health uses routinely collected real-world data on determinants of health (social, environmental, behavioural, biomedical and comm
