BACKGROUND: The manufacturing processes of plasma products include steps that can remove prions. The efficacy of these steps is measured in validation studies using animal brain-derived prion materials called spikes. Because the nature of the prion agent in blood is not known, the relevance of these spikes, particularly with steps that are based on retention mechanisms such as nanofiltration, is important to investigate.

The primary visual cortex of Callithrix jacchus occupies a large portion of the occipital neocortex and can be safely delineated from fetal stages onwards. In 20 animals ranging in age from fetal to adult age the morphological development of area 17 was evaluated and compared with the growth of whole brain, skull, and head size. Hysteroscopic myomectomy was performed in 25 patients using resectoscopes of two different sizes because of large submucous fibroids causing severe menorrhagia and anemia. The cervix was softened and dilated by inserting a laminaria tent the night before the operation. During the procedure a 7-mm resectoscope was first used to cut the pedicle to a size smaller than 10 mm. A sessile myoma was resected into a pedunculated myoma, and its body resected with a 9-mm resectoscope. The smaller portions were removed with a pair of forceps. Simultaneous ultrasonography was used to monitor the procedure.

Morphological characteristics of Mesocestoides lineatus tetrathyridia collected from Chinese snakes and their adults recovered from experimental animals were studied. The tetrathyridia were detected mainly in the mesentery of 2 snake species, Agkistrodon saxatilis (25%) and Elaphe schrenckii (20%). They were 1.73 by 1.02 mm in average size and had an invaginated scolex with 4 suckers. Adult tapeworms were recovered from 2 hamsters and 1 dog, which were orally infected with 5-10 larvae each. Adults from hamsters were about 32 cm long and those from a dog were about 58 cm long. The scolex was 0.

A case of a giant epidermoid cyst of the testis is presented. A 65-year-old man was incidentally pointed out to have left scrotal painless swelling. Physical examination revealed an over hen-egg sized enlargement of the left scrotal contents. Ultrasonography revealed a 7.5 X 5.5 X 4.0 cm solid tumor with heterogeneous echogenicity. No other abnormal findings were observed including tumor markers. Since preoperative examination did not rule out malignancy, we performed left high orchiectomy. We extended the limits of standard jaw and neck dissection in large tumors of the oropharynx with extension to the soft and hard palate.
