Horner's syndrome resulting from a prolonged abnormal posture during a coma.

BACKGROUND: Horner's syndrome results from the impairment of the sympathetic nerve supply to the eye and orbit. Other nerve palsies from prolonged unchanged posture are well described, but Horner's syndrome following prolonged lateral flexion has only twice been seen previously and these cases were in association with anaesthesia. METHODS/RESULTS: A case is described of Horner's syndrome resulting from a prolonged period of unchanged posture from an alcohol-induced coma. A review of the anatomy of Horner's syndrome is presented. CONCLUSION: To my knowledge, this is the first reported case of…

Visual stabilization of posture in persons with central visual field loss.

PURPOSE: To determine whether people with central visual field loss (CFL) show a smaller visual contribution to posture stabilization than people with normal vision and to determine the visual factors that predict the magnitude of visual stabilization in people with central visual field loss. METHODS: Posture information was recorded in 19 subjects with CFL and in 20 subjects with normal vision. Data were collected as the subject stood in a dark environment and also as he or she viewed a stationary visual display. In both conditions, somatosensory feedback was concurrently altered. The centra…

Effect of breathing, pressure and posture on palatoglossal and genioglossal tone.

1. Patency of the upper airway is critical to respiration. Although about half of patients with the sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome obstruct their upper airway at the retropalatal level, the respiratory actions of the palatal muscles have been little studied. We have therefore tested the hypothesis that the nasopharyngeal dilator muscle palatoglossus is activated during inspiration and by negative pressure. 2. Using intramuscular wire electrodes inserted perorally, we have compared the response of palatoglossus and genioglossus to breathing, posture change and airway negative pressure in 10 no…

A selective impairment of hand posture for object utilization in apraxia.

This study reports the case of an apraxic patient who was impaired in all aspects of gestural behavior following bilateral posterior parietal cortex lesions. The main impairment concerned manual prehension of objects during their utilization. The deficit contrasted with both normal movement trajectories of the arm during execution of such gestures, and with accurate manual prehension in the context of simple reaching movements. Although recognition of gestures and pantomimes made by the examiner was preserved, the patient showed a striking inability to visually discriminate or describe manual

Lip posture and mouth width in children with unilateral cleft lip.

The aim of this study was to measure on photographs the protrusion of the upper and lower lips and demonstrate their relationships to each other, to measure the width of the mouth, and to compare these findings within complete and incomplete cleft groups and with normal controls at the ages of 5 and 10 years. It was found that the lower lip was more protrusive and the mouth width was narrower in 5-year-old children with complete clefts prior to maxillary collapse than in the control children. It is concluded that there is a lack of tissue in the cleft lip leading to less distensibility and inc

Open mouth posture and cross-sectional nasal area in young children.

A biracial sample of two-hundred ninety-six children were assessed for open-mouth posture (OMP) in the natural environment. In addition, rhinometry was performed on 288 of the youngsters. Means were computed for percent OMP and cross-sectional nasal airway. Results indicated that in general these children exhibited relatively high rates of OMP. Boys displayed significantly greater OMP than girls. However, children exhibiting OMP on 80% of the observation intervals had significantly smaller cross-sectional nasal areas than the youngsters who displayed OMP on fewer than 20% of observation interv…

[Acute posttraumatic myocardial infarct: the necessity of an early interventionist posture].

We describe five cases of posttraumatic anterior acute myocardial infarction in young patients, without previous heart disease. One case was treated with intracoronary thrombolysis and angioplasty, 3 cases received systemic thrombolysis, and the last one did not have any re-permeabilization therapy, having arrived to the hospital 72 hours after the episode. The coronary angiograms showed at the left anterior descending artery: thrombosis in 3 cases, coronary dissection in one case, and slow flow with no morphological lesions in the other. The case which not received thrombolytic therapy develo

[Correction of posture disorders and scoliosis in schoolchildren using functional biofeedback].

A novel technique is offered for correction of postural defects and early manifestations of scoliosis in schoolchildren using methods of functional biofeedback training. The technique allowed the patient to use the biofeedback signals informing on the degree of asymmetry in bioelectric activity of paravertebral muscles in static active straightening of the vertebral column. The data revealed a steady decrease in asymmetric activity indices in muscles erecting the column. This provided a physiological basis for a high clinical efficiency of the technique.

Posture related to myoelectric silence of erectores spinae during trunk flexion.

Electromyographic activity of erectores spinae exhibits points of abrupt change during trunk flexion from the erect position and return extension. This study examined the positions at which the myoelectric activity suddenly disappeared and later reappeared. Forty adults were investigated to define accurately the inclinations of the trunk, pelvis, and vertebral column at these positions. The positions at the commencement and cessation of the period of electrical silence both occurred at two-thirds of maximum trunk flexion (mean = 80 degrees +/- 13 degrees SD). At these positions, all flexion me

Effect of selected drugs on arterial pressure response to upright posture.

Orthostatic hypotension may be secondary to a variety of factors, prominent among which is administration of drugs effecting autonomic function. Therapy of orthostatic hypotension has been successful using a directly acting sympathomimetic amine, ethylnorphenylephrine, which has a distinctive spectrum of alpha, beta1, and beta2 adrenergic agonist properties. The directly acting vasoconstrictor, dihydroergotamine, is effective, producing hemodynamic patterns reflecting a selective effect on capacitance vessels. Orthostatic hypotension secondary to the administration of L-dopa should usually res

Postural Responses in Trauma-Experienced Individuals.

Background: Balance and proprioception are essential elements in postural control and injury prevention. Proprioception, the body's sense of position and movement, is closely tied to balance, which depends on input from the visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems. This article explores the link between trauma experiences and proprioceptive dysfunction, emphasizing how heightened muscle tone, dissociation, and altered sensory processing contribute to balance issues and the risk of injury. Method: The study included 48 participants, aged 18-25. Participants completed the Emotional Regulati

Opisthotonic posturing in Guillian-Barre syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Here we report a child of Gullian Barre syndrome (GBS) with opisthotonic posturing and we subsequently detected Scrub typhus in him. CASE REPORT: An 11-year-old boy presented with progressive motor quadriparesis with transient bladder retention, bilateral facial weakness, diminished gag reflex, absent reflexes and his nerve conduction studies suggested Acute Motor Axonal Neuropathy (AMAN) GBS. His power gradually started recovering after one week. However, he had opisthotonus and signs of meningeal irritation. The child's CSF examination was consistent with GBS. His bacterial, f

[Postural tachycardia syndrome among adolescents].

Postural tachycardia syndrome (PoTS) is a frequent polymorphic clinical syndrome, poorly known and, as a result, underdiagnosed especially in adolescents. It is a form of dysautonomia, but its exact physiopathology remains elusive. It is characterized by heterogeneous symptoms that accompany a disproportionate tachycardia upon the upright position. It can significantly impact adolescents' quality of life. Only a Schellong test is useful to make the diagnosis; however additional testing is frequently performed in order to exclude conditions that may mimic, exacerbate or impact management. Treat
