Empowering Change Agents in Hierarchical Organizations: Participatory Action Research in Prisons.

Participatory action research (PAR) approaches harness collaborative partnerships to stimulate change in defined communities. The purpose of this article is to illustrate key methodological strategies used in the application of PAR methods in the particularly challenging environment of a hierarchical organization. A study designed to promote sustainable, insider-generated system-level changes in the provision of end-of-life (EOL) care in the restrictive setting of six state prisons is used as an exemplar of the application of three cardinal principles of PAR. First, development of a collaborat

Empowered to gain a new foothold in life--A study of the meaning of participating in cardiac rehabilitation to patients afflicted by a minor heart attack.

This study aimed to investigate what it means to patients afflicted by a minor heart attack to participate in cardiac rehabilitation (CR). CR is well-established internationally to support patients towards moving forward in satisfying, healthy, and well-functioning lives. Studies indicate that patients achieve improvement in quality of life when participating in CR. However, knowledge of how patients are supported during CR is sparse. Moreover, knowledge of what participating in CR means to patients afflicted by a minor heart attack is lacking. In-depth knowledge in this area is crucial in ord

Reactions to children's transgressions in at-risk caregivers: does mitigating information, type of transgression, or caregiver directive matter?

This study examined whether caregivers who exhibit high risk for child physical abuse differ from low-risk caregivers in reactions to transgressing children. Caregivers read vignettes describing child transgressions. These vignettes varied in: (a) the type of transgression described (moral, conventional, personal), (b) presentation of transgression-mitigating information (present, absent), and (c) whether a directive to avoid the transgression was in the vignette (yes, no). After reading each vignette, caregivers provided ratings reflecting their: (a) perceptions of transgression wrongness, (b

Women and men's use of coercive control in intimate partner violence.

This study examined the relationship between coercive control and intimate partner violence (IPV) for men and women and for targets and perpetrators. One hundred and seventy-two participants (85 men, 87 women) recruited from three samples reported on their own and their partner's behavior. IPV was measured using the Revised Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2). Coercive control was measured using modified items from the Psychological Maltreatment of Women Inventory (PMWI). Coercive control was associated with IPV, and this relationship was similar for men and women across the three samples. In fact,

[Empowerment of children and adolescents--the role of personal and social resources and personal autonomy for subjective health].

AIM: Scientific research on empowerment so far is nearly exclusively focused on the adult population. Nevertheless, it is possible to show a link between empowerment and a) the developmental psychology concepts of resilience, b) autogenetic concepts and c) concepts of risks and resources. This paper aims to study the role of personal, familial and other social resources as well as personal autonomy for subjective health-ratings. METHODS: A secondary analysis of the health data of 7,000 children and adolescents aged 10-17 years of the German health behaviour in school-aged children (HBSC) stud

Microbicide trials for preventing HIV/AIDS in South Africa: phase II trial partricipants' experiences and psychological needs.

The Microbicide Division of the Department of Medical Microbiology at MEDUNSA, South Africa, recently completed a phase II expanded safety trial of the candidate microbicide Carraguard. A microbicide is a vaginal product that women might use, if proven safe and effective, to protect themselves from HIV and possibly other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The study participants were from Ga-Rankuwa and its neighbouring areas, an historically disadvantaged residential township near Pretoria. We conducted six focus group discussions with phase II trial participants to evaluate their experie

Women's attitudes to condoms and female-controlled means of protection against HIV and STDs in south-western Uganda.

The consistent and correct use of the male condom makes it highly effective in both disease prevention and as a contraceptive method. However, it is also well recognized that its use is under men's control. Because of this vital limitation, there have been frequent calls for female-controlled methods of HIV prevention, particularly from women from sub-Saharan Africa. Here we report on data collected in focus-group discussions (FGDs) with women aged 17-54 in South-Western Uganda. A total of 138 women, from rural villages, urban family planning clinics and a truck-stop town, were recruited to pa

On what basis hope? Modern progress and postmodern possibilities.

Modern and postmodern versions of hope as they apply to services for persons labeled as having mental retardation were examined. Proponents of modernism construct hope as relying on an ever-improving science to accurately comprehend mental retardation and other disabilities and the effectiveness of professional interventions. This myth of scientific progress is traced in various forms through American intellectual history to the development of special education as interventionist social science. Advocates of postmodernism cast doubt upon the grand narrative of modernism and critique modern soc

[Associations between cardiovascular diseases and psychosocial factors and options for intervention].

Coronary artery disease is a highly prevalent heart disease and the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. During the last decades, numerous studies have focused on the comprehension of the relationship between coronary heart disease and different psychosocial factors. Coronary artery bypass graft surgery is a common treatment for coronary artery disease and is usually associated with improved clinical outcomes. Symptoms of anxiety and unipolar depression are common psychological disorders in patients awaiting coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Several prospective

A Meta-Analysis of the Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Anger and Aggression.

Anger and aggression are causes of significant suffering. Psychological methods to prevent and reduce anger and aggression have been partially successful; however, there is room for novel interventions, such as those informed by neuroscience. One such intervention is anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), which involves administering a weak electrical current to the brain to stimulate cortical activity. In this meta-analysis, we synthesized 93 effect sizes from 25 sham-controlled experiments. We predicted that tDCS would reduce anger and aggression. The overall results showed n

Is theta/beta Neurofeedback effective for gambling disorder treatment? Insights from a case report.

Several studies showed the effectiveness of theta/beta Neurofeedback (NF) training (i.e., decrease theta power and simultaneously increase beta power) in treating different psychiatric conditions characterized by impaired cognitive control. However, investigations concerning Gambling Disorder (GD) have not yet been conducted. Thus, the main aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of 11 theta/beta NF sessions in the treatment of a patient with GD. A psychological and neuropsychological assessment was performed before and after NF. A general improvement in symptoms severity

SHIFT-48: Schedule and Health Improvements for Firefighters Transitioning to 48/96.

OBJECTIVE: Examine the effects of transitioning from a 24/48 to a 48/96 shift schedule on health and performance in firefighters assigned to a single, suburban station. METHODS: A longitudinal analysis was conducted over 3 time points in 11 male firefighters. Measures included VO 2peak , peak power, blood pressure, resting heart rate, lipid profiles, and psychological assessments. Linear mixed-effects models analyzed changes across time points. RESULTS: Transitioning to the 48/96 schedule was associated with improvements in peak power (+27.1 W, P = 0.042), resting blood pressure (SBP -5.5 mm

Debt Collection Pressure and Mental Health: Evidence from a Cohort of U.S. Young Adults.

The debt collection industry in the United States has grown in tandem with rising indebtedness. Prior research on debt and mental health mainly treats debt as a resource and liability rather than a power relationship between creditors and debtors. We study the mental health consequences of debt collection pressure using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-1997 Cohort (N = 7,236). Drawing on stress theory and health power resources theory, we posit collection pressure as a relational stressor that undermines well-being through negative interactions with debt collectors, financia

Changes in vocational college students' mental health over two academic years: associations with family factors and co-curricular activities.

BACKGROUND: Vocational college students face elevated risks of psychological distress due to academic, interpersonal and family stressors. However, longitudinal evidence tracking their two-year mental health shifts and relevant ecological correlates remains scarce. This study analyzed two-year mental health changes among vocational college students and examined correlations between family background variables and co-curricular activities (locally named "second classroom"). METHODS: A two-year longitudinal survey was conducted with 1,277 students recruited from one vocational college in Anhui,

Hindlimb unloading elicits anhedonia and sympathovagal imbalance.

The hindlimb-unloaded (HU) rat model elicits cardiovascular deconditioning and simulates the physiological adaptations to microgravity or prolonged bed rest in humans. Although psychological deficits have been documented following bed rest and spaceflight in humans, few studies have explored the psychological effects of cardiovascular deconditioning in animal models. Given the bidirectional link established between cardiac autonomic imbalance and psychological depression in both humans and in animal models, we hypothesized that hindlimb unloading would elicit an alteration in sympathovagal ton

How the social media impact women's psychological well-being in the patriarchal structure? The moderating effect of social capital.

BACKGROUND: Despite technological, political and economic progress, Pakistan is still a traditionally patriarchal society, and cultural norms curb women's freedom of socialization, which contributes to poor mental health. The digital technology spaces are rampant with male dominance, and offline cultural behaviours are replicated. Therefore, the current research in Pakistan intends to focus solely on women, their social media uses and the consequent impact on their psychological well-being. Furthermore, the mediation role of social capital is explored, which is linked to women's socialization.

Sense of mastery, social support, and health in elderly Canadians.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the structural relationships among sense of mastery (SOM), income level, social support, physical health, and stress in older Canadians, while controlling for demographic characteristics. METHOD: This research uses data collected in the National Population Health Survey on Canadians aged 65 years and older (N = 1,399). RESULTS: Higher income predicts better health and more social support, which, in turn, predicts higher SOM. The relationship between physical health and stress is fully mediated through SOM for both genders. The SOM fully mediates the rela

A Cortical Stress Signature of Fear-Induced Walking: Mobile Electroencephalography Theta Suppression in Older Women With Fear of Falling.

BACKGROUND: Fear of falling is one of the most common and disabling stress responses of later life, yet how it is expressed in the brain during real walking is poorly understood. We examined whether walking under a naturalistic psychological threat, a fear-of-falling stressor, changes cortical oscillatory activity in older women, using mobile electroencephalography. METHODS: In this within-subject study, 30 community-dwelling women aged 65 years or older underwent three-dimensional gait analysis with concurrent 14-channel electroencephalography (128 Hz) during habitual walking and after intro

Psychological and Sociocultural Determinants in Childhood Asthma Disease: Impact on Quality of Life.

Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood. The presence of this pathology in children leads to the appearance of different alterations (physical, psychological, social, etc.). Due to their high influence, the aim of this study is to understand these psychological and sociocultural determinants and their impact on the quality of life of asthmatic children. In order to determine the influence of these determinants on quality of life, a narrative review of 48 articles collected in different databases was carried out. Emotions are the most powerful precursor to producing an asthmatic
