We determined serial IgG antibody responses to cytomegalovirus (CMV)-encoded proteins in sera collected over a one-year interval from 14 subjects with CMV mononucleosis. Antigens from infected human fibroblasts included three components: cytoplasmic, nuclear, and high-speed pellet. Antibody was detected by radioimmunoprecipitation followed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. To identify antigens important to the diagnosis or pathogenesis of coccidioidomycosis, we analyzed three coccidioidal extracts by immunoblotting techniques with sera from patients infected with Coccidioides immitis and from immunized rabbits. Counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE) was used to detect antibodies to Schistosoma japonicum soluble egg antigen in 118 sera from people living in a schistosomiasis endemic area in the Philippines. Heterologous antiserum was prepared in rabbits against highly purified human antihemophilic factor (AHF, factor VIII). The type-specific antigens of group B type Ic (old designation type Ii) streptococci were extracted, purified, and characterized by serological and chemical methods. The Ia antigen, shared by types Ia and Ic, is a polysaccharide composed of 69% galactose and 25% glucosamine (i.e., 31% N-acetyl-glucosamine). A 77-year-old woman with a 15-year history of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was admitted to our hospital because of a wet cough that persisted for 1 month.
