An In Vitro Study on the Application of Silver-Doped Platelet-Rich Plasma in the Prevention of Post-Implant-Associated Infections.

Implant therapy is a common treatment option in dentistry and orthopedics, but its application is often associated with an increased risk of microbial contamination of the implant surfaces that cause bone tissue impairment. This study aims to develop two silver-enriched platelet-rich plasma (PRP) multifunctional scaffolds active at the same time in preventing implant-associated infections and stimulating bone regeneration. Commercial silver lactate (L) and newly synthesized silver deoxycholate:β-Cyclodextrin (B), were studied in vitro. Initially, the antimicrobial activity of the two silver so

Oral treatment with catechin isolated from Japanese green tea significantly inhibits the growth of periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gulae and ameliorates the gingivitis and halitosis caused by periodontal disease in cats and dogs.

It has been postulated that 90 % of cats and dogs develop periodontal disease by 1 year of age. Periodontal disease develops because of infection by multiple bacteria, including Porphyromonas gulae (P. gulae) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis), resulting in severe gingivitis, halitosis, and bone lysis. Because periodontal disease is an irreversible disorder, preventive dentistry in veterinary medicine has become pertinent. This study examined the efficacy of catechin isolated from green tea by focusing on its bactericidal effects against P. gulae and P. gingivalis, inhibition of infl…

Associated medical conditions among 10-year-old children with oral clefts - a retrospective review across three cleft centres: Part 2.

Introduction In many cases, children with oral clefts present with accompanying medical conditions. These associated conditions can add complexity to the patient's dental management, both in terms of their treatment need and risk. Recognition and careful consideration of associated medical conditions is therefore crucial in providing safe and effective care for these patients.Aim This paper is the second in a two-part three-centre series. It investigates the prevalence of medical conditions affecting cleft lip and/or palate patients attending three cleft units within the UK.Method Retrospectiv

Dental disease in type 3 Von Willebrand disease: a neglected problem.

Type 3 Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a rare, severe, autosomal recessive bleeding disorder. In our institution, we follow 17 children with type 3 VWD. We have observed a high prevalence of dental disease in these patients prompting us to undertake a retrospective review of our cohort of patients with type 3 VWD to catalogue the extent of their dental disease. Sixteen of these patients have been assessed by our dentistry department. Five children have undergone minor dental procedures (e.g. restorations, stainless steel crowns) and seven major procedures (e.g. dental extractions, pulpotomies

Oral health and family characteristics of children attending private or public dental clinics.

The City of North York Public Health Department (NYPHD) operates a school-based dental programme that provides preventive and treatment services to children according to evidence-based practice guidelines. This programme and private dental practices (PDP) represent the only sources of dental care for children in North York. The purpose of our study was to compare the oral health and family characteristics of clients from the NYPHD and PDP using a dental examination and a parent interview. Results showed that NYPHD and PDP clients had similar levels of fluorosis, calculus, and periodontal healt

Case Report: Treatment and management of a child at high risk of caries.

INTRODUCTION: Caries are at the forefront of childhood diseases. Although childhood caries is usually not life-threatening, it can affect children's dental-maxillofacial development and mental health and place significant financial and psychological burdens on parents. As the focus of childhood dental caries shifts to early diagnosis and prevention rather than restorative dentistry alone, screening children at a high risk of dental caries is urgent. Appropriate caries prevention measures and treatment sequences can effectively reduce the occurrence and development of dental caries in children.

[Significance and Points to Note of Perioperative Oral Care].

With the development of minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer, surgical indications for elderly patients have been increasing. However, elderly patients are at risk for aspiration pneumonia, which is accompanied by a decline in swallowing function and results in aspiration pneumonia. More than 700- 1,000 species are present in the oral microbiome, and the progression of the oral microbiome to the lung has been reported to be associated with poor prognosis. Perioperative complications include dental injuries associated with intubation for general anesthesia and postoperative pneumonia. Pre

Dentists' Satisfaction With the Dental Amalgam Phase Down Training Programme.

BACKGROUND: Dental amalgam phase down (DAPD) has ushered in a paradigm shift towards the use of adhesive alternative restorative dental materials and dental caries prevention. The emergence of a new restorative practice model has created a gap among some dentists, highlighting the need to reorient their knowledge and skills. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to assess dentists' level of satisfaction with a DAPD training programme and identify associations between sociodemographic characteristics and satisfaction levels, in Kenya, a low- and middle-income country.  Materials and me

Soft tissue considerations in modern restorative dental practice.

In dentistry, the success of a restoration depends not only on the choice of material or technique but also on the preservation of periodontal physiology and health. A healthy periodontium forms the essential foundation for long-term restorative success, making an interdisciplinary approach indispensable. Respecting biologic width is critical to prevent inflammation and attachment loss, while non- surgical methods such as provisional contouring can effectively guide soft tissue healing. Surgical strategies, including crown lengthening, are employed to correct deficiencies and establish harmony

Pain complications of oral implants: Is that an issue?

The use of oral implants as a form of replacing missing teeth in partial or total edentulous patients is considered the gold standard in oral rehabilitation. Although considered a history of success in contemporary dentistry, surgical complications may occur, as excessive bleeding, damage to the adjacent teeth and mandibular fractures. Persistent pain and abnormal somatosensory responses after the surgery ordinary healing time are also potential problems and may lead to the development of a condition named posttraumatic trigeminal neuropathic pain (PTNP). Though relatively rare, PTNP has a pro

Fifteen-year Clinical Follow-up of Restoration of Extensive Cervical Resorption in a Maxillary Central Incisor.

Internal bleaching in endodontically treated teeth requires care and protection to prevent harm to the periodontal ligament due to peroxide and may result in external root resorption. There is a myriad of treatment options when this occurs, such as monitoring, extraction, and subsequent rehabilitation with implants or fixed prosthodontics. In some cases, such as the one described here, a conservative attempt to maintain the tooth as a single structure can be made by sealing the resorptive defect. In the present case, we show a multidisciplinary approach where orthodontics, periodontics, and re

Clinical significance of bacterial resistance to tetracyclines in the treatment of periodontal diseases.

Tetracyclines are frequently employed during the treatment of clinical infections in medicine and dentistry, however, emergence of resistant bacterial strains has decreased the utility of these drugs. Accordingly, there is concern that indiscriminant administration of tetracyclines during periodontal therapy will further contribute to the development of additional resistant microorganisms which can complicate infectious disease therapy. This review paper briefly discusses the utility of tetracyclines as an antimicrobial agent in the treatment of periodontal diseases. It then focuses on the cli

Dens invaginatus: a review and case series.

Dens invaginatus is a dental anomaly resulting in an abnormal tooth morphology, most commonly affecting the permanent dentition. An associated infolding of the outer enamel organ results in structural pocketing and increased susceptibility to dental disease. Clinical sequalae of affected teeth may include dental caries, pulpal pathology, devitalisation, discolouration, localised periodontal pocketing or increased tooth mobility. Early diagnosis is therefore essential in the delivery of effective prevention and informed treatment planning. Clinicians should be aware of the diverse clinical and

Comparative analysis of fluoride release from type II GIC, ketac molar and ketac universal: An in vitro study.

Limited evidence exists regarding the comparative fluoride release of different glass ionomer restorative materials used in clinical dentistry. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate and compare the fluoride release of Type II GIC, Ketac Molar, and Ketac Universal at different time intervals. Fluoride ion release from these materials was assessed over 1, 7, and 28 days using a UV-visible spectrophotometer. Significant differences in fluoride release were observed among the materials (p < 0.001). Ketac Universal showed the highest fluoride release at all evaluated intervals. Fluoride release
