Ayurveda and Preventive Public Health in India: A Policy Perspective for Primary Health Care.

Community medicine emphasizes health promotion and disease prevention at the population level. In India, the growing burden of lifestyle-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) highlights the need for effective preventive and promotive strategies. Traditional systems that prioritize lifestyle regulation and early risk modification are therefore of increasing relevance. To discuss the preventive role of Ayurveda in the context of rising non-communicable diseases and to highlight its potential relevance for primary health care and community medicine. This viewpoint draws upon selected evidence

The perils of the imperfect expectation of the perfect baby.

Advances in modern medicine invite the assumption that medicine can control human biology. There is a perilous logic that leads from expectations of medicine's control over reproductive biology to the expectation of having a perfect baby. This article proposes that obstetricians should take a preventive ethics approach to the care of pregnant women with expectations for a perfect baby. We use Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic short story, "The Birthmark," to illustrate the perils of the logic of control and perfection through science and then identify possible contemporary sources of the expectati

A Comprehensive Review of Autophagy and Its Various Roles in Infectious, Non-Infectious, and Lifestyle Diseases: Current Knowledge and Prospects for Disease Prevention, Novel Drug Design, and Therapy.

Autophagy (self-eating) is a conserved cellular degradation process that plays important roles in maintaining homeostasis and preventing nutritional, metabolic, and infection-mediated stresses. Autophagy dysfunction can have various pathological consequences, including tumor progression, pathogen hyper-virulence, and neurodegeneration. This review describes the mechanisms of autophagy and its associations with other cell death mechanisms, including apoptosis, necrosis, necroptosis, and autosis. Autophagy has both positive and negative roles in infection, cancer, neural development, metabolism,

Rationale and Best Practices for Pediatric Cardiology Prevention Programs.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death in North America, and a significant number of children have conditions such as inherited dyslipidemias, overweight/obesity, and hypertension, placing them at increased risk for future cardiovascular events and other comorbidities. Training in cardiovascular prevention is an important tool to help pediatric cardiologists address these issues in children. We describe a model for training pediatric cardiologists in primary and secondary prevention strategies. A multidisciplinary team approach is needed for robust training

Prevention of depressive disorders in older adults: An overview.

Prevention of depressive disorders is one of the most important challenges for health care in coming decades. Depressive disorders in all age groups have a high disease burden and are associated with huge economic costs, and current treatments are only capable of taking away one-third of the (nonfatal) disease burden of depression under optimal conditions. Prevention may be one alternative strategy that may help in further reducing the disease burden of depression. Because of the worldwide increase in the number of older adults, the number of depressed older adults will also increase considera

[Hepatitis B vaccination. Advocating for a protection principle].

Hepatitis B is a worldwide disease. More than 350 million persons are chronic carriers and around one-quarter of these chronic carriers will develop cirrhosis or liver cancer within 30 years. Since 1981, more than a billion doses of hepatitis B vaccine have been used worldwide and it is considered one of the safest vaccines ever produced. The suggestion of a link between hepatitis B vaccine and demyelinating diseases has arisen because of case reports, although inevitably some people will develop symptoms of demyelination by chance after receiving hepatitis B vaccine. Scientific data could nev

The prevention and management of iodine-induced hyperthyroidism and its cardiac features.

Review of available literature and experience supports a recommended daily iodine intake of 150 microg for adults, 200 microg during pregnancy, 50 microg for the first year of life, 90 microg for ages 1 to 6, and 120 microg for ages 7 to 12. The amount of iodine added to salt in fortification programs should be adjusted to achieve these intakes. Iodine-induced hyperthyroidism (IIH) is an occasional consequence of the correction of iodine deficiency, occurring most frequently in older subjects with multinodular goiter. This complication is usually mild and self-limited, but may be serious and o

Travel medicine: helping patients prepare for trips abroad.

One third of persons who travel abroad experience a travel-related illness, usually diarrhea or an upper respiratory infection. The risk of travelers' diarrhea can be reduced by eating only freshly prepared, hot foods. Combination therapy with a single dose of ofloxacin plus loperamide usually provides relief from travelers' diarrhea within 24 hours. Using a diethyltoluamide (deet)-containing insect repellent and wearing permethrin-coated clothing can reduce the risk of malaria, yellow fever and other diseases contracted from insects. Routine immunizations such as tetanus, measles, mumps and r

[Functional foods].

This lecture first pinpoints the "tertiary" function of foods which, as opposed to the conventional "primary" and "secondary" functions that are related to nutrition and preference, respectively, is understood to be directly involved in the modulation of our physiological systems such as the immune, endocrine, nervous, circulatory, and digestive systems Insights into this newly defined function are particularly important in that the intake of physiologically functional food factors could be effective in preventing diseases that may be caused by disorders in these systems. Technologically, it h
