Cosmeceuticals based on Rhealba(®) Oat plantlet extract for the treatment of acne vulgaris.

Recent evidence suggests that acne vulgaris begins as an inflammation in and around the sebaceous gland and alterations in the lipid content of sebum, which drive hyperproliferation and increased desquamation of keratinocytes within sebaceous follicles. This prevents sebum drainage, causing the formation of microcomedones, which spontaneously regress or become acne lesions when the pilosebaceous unit is further blocked by the accumulation of corneocytes. These conditions are favourable for the proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes, which further aggravates acne by enhancing abnormal desquam…

A microbial etiology of acne?

The view is advanced that sebum as originally produced must contain materials, other than lipids, which may serve as a selective substrate for growth of bacteria and yeasts. Growth of large numbers of P. acnes and P. granulosum in some follicles is considered to place those follicles at risk of undergoing pathological changes. Deleterious products of bacterial growth could be not only lipase and free fatty acids, but also other enzymes as well as bacterial antigens and unspecified toxins or irritants. The possibility is suggested that follicles heavily infested with P. acnes and P. granulosum

Unravelling the eco-specificity and pathophysiological properties of Cutibacterium species in the light of recent taxonomic changes.

In 2016, a new species name Cutibacterium acnes was coined for the well-documented species, Propionibacterium acnes, one of the most successful and clinically important skin commensals. The nomenclatural changes were brought about through creation of the genus Cutibacterium, when a group of propionibacteria isolates from the skin were transferred from the genus Propionibacterium and placed in the phylum Actinobacteria. Almost simultaneously, the discovery of two novel species of Cutibacterium occurred and the proposal of three subspecies of C. acnes were reported. These dramatic changes that o…

A case of bilateral hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy developing during treatment for Mycobacterium avium complex.

We report a rare case of an immunocompetent patient with Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) disease in which bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy developed during anti-MAC treatment. This case indicates that Propionibacterium acnes would be present and might be a cause of sarcoidosis even in patients with MAC.

Optimization of genotypic and biochemical methods to profile P. acnes isolates from a patient population.

Propionibacterium acnes is a key factor in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris, although currently it is also being associated with medical-device infections. The aim of this work was to validate a safe and quick identification and typing of 24 clinical isolates of Propionibacterium acnes, applying a range of biochemical as well as genetic methods, and investigating the pathogenic potential to associate the different types with human health. RAPD-PCRs revealed the existence of two discernible clusters in correspondence with the phylogroups I and II, according to the PAtig gene polymorphism, lead…

Microbiology of hidradenitis suppurativa (acne inversa): a histological study of 27 patients.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (acne inverse) (HS) is a chronic skin disease primarily affecting hair follicles. The aetiology of HS is unknown, but infection is believed to play some role. This retrospective study investigated the microbial colonization directly in skin appendices in HS skin samples. Archival samples from 27 patients with HS were screened by immunofluorescence labelling with monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies against Gram-positive bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes and Propionibacterium granulosum. Fluorescence in situ hybridization was used for further species identification of S…

Comparative genomics reveals distinct host-interacting traits of three major human-associated propionibacteria.

BACKGROUND: Propionibacteria are part of the human microbiota. Many studies have addressed the predominant colonizer of sebaceous follicles of the skin, Propionibacterium acnes, and investigated its association with the skin disorder acne vulgaris, and lately with prostate cancer. Much less is known about two other propionibacterial species frequently found on human tissue sites, Propionibacterium granulosum and Propionibacterium avidum. Here we analyzed two and three genomes of P. granulosum and P. avidum, respectively, and compared them to two genomes of P. acnes; we further highlight differ…

The pathophysiology of acne vulgaris in children and adolescents, part 2: Tailoring treatment.

Various pathophysiologic factors are involved in the development of acne lesions, microcomedones, comedones, and inflammatory lesions. These factors include follicular hyperkeratosis, increased colonization of follicles by Propionibacterium acnes, increased sebum production, and inflammatory mediators. Optimal treatment of acne involves the use of agents that address these various underlying pathogenetic factors.

Scalp bacterial shift in Alopecia areata.

The role of microbial dysbiosis in scalp disease has been recently hypothesized. However, little information is available with regards to the association between microbial population on the scalp and hair diseases related to hair growth. Here we investigated bacterial communities in healthy and Alopecia areata (AA) subjects. The analysis of bacterial distribution at the genus level highlighted an increase of Propionibacterium in AA subjects alongside a general decrease of Staphylococcus. Analysis of log Relative abundance of main bacterial species inhabiting the scalp showed a significant incr…

Does inflammatory acne result from imbalance in the keratinocyte innate immune response?

Acne is a multifactorial chronic disease affecting around 80% of teenage population. The pathogenesis of acne involves inflammatory reactions and colonization by the Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) strain. P. acnes stimulates the keratinocytes involved in the innate immune response, the intensity of which could be influenced either by bacterial intrinsic factors or by endogenous factors of the host.

New approaches in light/laser therapies and photodynamic treatment of acne.

Acne is a domain in which the technology and understanding of light/laser therapeutic procedures have advanced considerably. The aim of the paper was to revisit adjunctive physical treatments of acne, including light/laser treatments and photodynamic therapy. This review summarizes findings about such treatment modalities with particular emphasis on efficacy and safety. A number of laser/light-based modalities have been developed to meet the increasing demand for new acne treatments. The current devices correspond, on the one hand, to light-emitting diode therapy and, on the other hand, to the

Chronic anaerobic bacterial endophthalmitis in pseudophakic rabbit eyes.

Experimental anaerobic bacterial endophthalmitis was produced in pseudophakic and aphakic rabbits by using anterior chamber inoculation of 2.5 x 10(6) Propionibacterium acnes organisms. Clinical inflammation was more intense and prolonged in operated eyes with an intraocular lens in place. The presence of an intraocular lens favors the development of chronic low-grade P. acnes-related inflammation.
