The impetus theory in judgments about object motion: a new perspective.

Several tendencies found in explicit judgments about object motion have been interpreted as evidence that people possess a naive theory of impetus. The theory states that objects that are caused to move by other objects acquire force that determines the kind of motion exhibited by the object, and that this force gradually dissipates over time. I argue that the findings can better be understood as manifestations of a general understanding of externally caused motion based on experiences of acting on objects. Experiences of acting on objects yield the idea that properties of the cause of motion

Skating down a steeper slope: fear influences the perception of geographical slant.

Previous studies have shown that conscious awareness of hill slant is overestimated, but visually guided actions directed at hills are relatively accurate. Also, steep hills are consciously estimated to be steeper from the top than the bottom, possibly because they are dangerous to descend. In the present study, participants stood at the top of a hill either on a skateboard or a wooden box of the same height. They gave three estimates of the slant: a verbal report, a visually matched estimate, and a visually guided action. Fear of descending the hill was also assessed. Those participants who w

Early integration of retinal and extra-retinal information: recent results and hypotheses.

This review aims at highlighting and discussing some recent neurophysiological and psychological findings and hypotheses about early cortical integration of visual and extra-retinal information which is involved in the stability of visual perception in spite of the change of body orientation and distance to objects and eye movements. Within this framework, the possible role of some cortical and cortico-thalamic loops between earlier and later stages of visual processing is also emphasized. A complete study of multimodal processing is beyond the scope of this review.

Recurrent connections facilitate occluded object recognition by explaining-away.

Despite the ubiquity of recurrent connections in the brain, their role in visual processing is less understood than that of feedforward conn … ual system. In line with these results, we find evidence consistent with explaining-away in a human psychophysics experiment. Finally, we developed an experimentally inspired recurrent model that recovers fine-grained features of occluded stimuli by explaining-away. Recurrent connections' capability to explain-away may extend to more general cases where undoing …

Illusory and veridical mapping of tactile objects in the primary somatosensory and posterior parietal cortex.

While several behavioral and neuroscience studies have explored visual, auditory, and cross-modal illusions, information about the phenomenology and neural correlates of somatosensory illusions is meager. By combining psychophysics and somatosensory evoked potentials, we explored in healthy humans the neural correlates of 2 compelling tactuo-proprioceptive illusions, namely Aristotle (1 object touching the contact area between 2 crossed fingers is perceived as 2 lateral objects) and Reverse illusions (2 lateral objects are perceived as 1 between crossed-fingers object). These illusions likely …

Horizontal/vertical differences in range and upper/lower visual field differences in the midpoints of sensory fusion limits of oriented lines.

O'Shea and Crassini (1982, Perception & Psychophysics 32 195-196) demonstrated that fusion persists for vertical lines with an orientation disparity of 8 degrees, but diplopia is experienced in simultaneously presented horizontal lines with the same disparity. They concluded that the neural fusion process fuses larger horizontal disparities than vertical disparities. Kertesz criticised their demonstration because it did not quantify the possible motor component associated with fusing their counter-rotated images. Krekling and Blika argued that the demonstrated anisotropy is due to a disparity …

The Deteriorated Center-Surround Suppression in Patients With First-Episode and Drug-Naïve Major Depressive Disorder.

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) patients are often associated with inhibition deficits in the visual cortex. Most previous research has focused on visual inhibition in MDD patients during acute and remission phases, with little research on first-episode and drug-naïve (FEDN) patients. To fill this gap, we psychophysically investigated the inhibitory process of visual motion in patients with FEDN MDD. Methods: Two psychophysical tasks: Center-Surround Suppression (CSS) and Motion Repulsion (MR) were utilized to investigate the presence of visual perceptual inhibition deficits in pat

Computational mechanisms of perception in autism revealed using games inspired by rodent operant tasks.

Altered perception is a hallmark of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet its underlying mechanisms remain unclear, in part because individuals with greater impairments are often excluded from psychophysics research. Here, we introduce GEODE (gathering evidence to optimize decisions), an online video game designed to measure visual perception across the full autism spectrum. GEODE incorporates feedback-based shaping from animal training to teach task mechanics, customized graphics and storyline elements to sustain engagement, and touchscreen compatibility for broader accessibility, enabling part…

To date, perioperative OIH has rarely been objectively assessed by psychophysics tests in patients. A direct relationship between the presence of perioperative OIH and patient outcome is missing and certainly deserves further studies.

Molecular analysis of the effect of relative tone level on multitone pattern discrimination.

Molecular psychophysics attempts to model the observer's response to stimuli as they vary from trial to trial. The approach has gained popularity in multitone pattern discrimination studies as a means of estimating the relative reliance or decision weight listeners give to different tones in the pattern. Various factors affecting decision weights have been examined, but one largely ignored is the relative level of tones in the pattern. In the present study listeners detected a level-increment in a sequence of 5, 100-ms, 2.0-kHz tone bursts alternating in level between 40 and 80 dB SPL. The lev…

Number of sampling movements and manual stiffness judgments.

OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that when using posteroanterior pressure to assess the stiffness of the spine, no more than two or three oscillations should be used. This study sought to examine this clinical impression by investigating the effect of the number of sampling movements on stiffness perception. DESIGN: Perceptual study using a mechanical device to provide stiffness stimuli, with university staff and students as judges. SETTING: University psychophysics laboratory. INTERVENTIONS: In part 1, subjects were directed to sample the stimuli a prescribed number of times (either 1, 2, …

Sensations evoked by intraneural microstimulation of single mechanoreceptor units innervating the human hand.

Intraneural microstimulation (i.n.m.s.) was performed in awake human volunteers, using tungsten micro-electrodes inserted into median and ulnar nerve fascicles supplying the skin of the hand. The same electrodes were used alternatively to record impulse activity from single nerve fibres at the i.n.m.s. sites. Monitoring occasionally, with a proximal electrode, the impulse traffic evoked by i.n.m.s. distally in the same fascicle, established that the stimulation procedure could be made selective enough to activate single myelinated fibres in isolation, while also permitting multifibre recruitme

Impaired critical flicker frequency in recovered optic neuritis.

Thirteen patients with optic neuritis who recovered normal visual acuity and kinetic perimetry all showed impairment of foveal critical flicker frequency, a psychophysical test of visual temporal resolution. Because the magnocellular visual system demonstrates higher temporal resolution than the parvocellular system, this finding implicates involvement of axonal projections of magnocellular retinal ganglion cells in recovered optic neuritis.

Relation between frequency selectivity and speech perception following glycerol-induced cochlear changes.

Changes in auditory threshold, psychophysical tuning curves, and speech perception (in both quiet and noise) were monitored over a 3-hr period following the ingestion of glycerol. All listeners had sensorineural hearing loss secondary to Menière's disease. Findings were characterized by large intersubject variability and in general did not show a clear relation between changes in threshold, frequency resolution, and speech perception.

Rod or cone dysfunction: uniocular presentations.

Two patients presented with unusual uniocular electroretinographic (ERG) phenomena. One patient showed the ERG characteristics of stationary night blindness in one eye only and the other patient presented with ERG evidence of uniocular cone dysfunction. In both patients, however, further electrophysiological and psychophysical studies and serial testing provided evidence for dysfunction of both receptor systems and relatively subtle involvement of the fellow eyes.

The art of perimetry.

There is no single method of perimetric examination which is applicable to all types of visual field defects. Perimetry is a subjective psychophysical sensory examination. It is not an exact science unless one includes the objective measurement of visual evoked response in the optic cortex. Until such a method becomes clinically available it will be necessary for the perimetrist to determine which techniques to use in a given case and to apply these techniques with sympathetic understanding. This is the art of perimetry.

Linking visual span and reading speed in dyslexia.

This study examines visual processing in dyslexia using a psychophysical measure linked to reading speed, the visual span, defined as the number of letters reliably identified within a single fixation. We asked whether reduced visual span is associated with slower reading in dyslexia. In a laboratory study, adults with dyslexia and typical readers completed standardized assessments, reading speed, and visual span measurements. Individuals with dyslexia showed significantly slower reading speeds and narrower visual span profiles than typical readers. Visual span size was positively correlated w
