Plasma structuring within an expanded polar cap and cusp studied with the SS-520-3 sounding rocket.

The global cancer burden is expected to rise over the next few decades, with an equally significant increase in the need for cancer surgical services. It is well known that gross inequities exist in accessing cancer surgical care on the global stage. The goal of this manuscript is to highlight the inequities in accessing cancer surgical care and outline some strategies to address them. We used GLOBOCAN 2022 to document the current and predicted rise in the future cancer burden for the various income groups, as defined by the World Bank Group. Data from relevant agencies such as the Internation

The financial burden of dengue and its coping mechanism by household: a mixed-method study in Khordha District, Odisha, India.

AIMS: Dengue fever, transmitted by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, presents a wide clinical spectrum ranging from mild febrile illness to severe manifestations such as dengue hemorrhagic fever. It poses a substantial global health concern, with India significantly contributing to its burden. Factors such as rapid urbanization, population density, and favorable climatic conditions facilitate its spread, particularly in states like Odisha. This study aimed to estimate the financial burden imposed by dengue on households in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, and to explore the coping strategies adopted by these hous

Examining the prevalence of reproductive tract infections (RTIs) and their correlation with knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP): a cross-sectional study among university-affiliated women.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive tract infections (RTIs) remain a major public health concern among women of reproductive age, but limited evidence exists on their association with knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in university settings. This study examined the prevalence of RTIs and their relationship with KAP and sociodemographic factors among university-affiliated women. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from October 2023 to March 2024 among 457 women aged 18-48 years at a large comprehensive university in Tianjin, China, including students, faculty, administrative staff, an

One third of hospital costs for atherothrombotic disease are attributable to readmissions: a linked data analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is the most frequent cause of death in Australia, with an associated cost burden of 11% of Australian annual health expenditure of which 40% is for hospital admissions. We investigated health outcomes and the components of hospital expenditure in the two years after an atherothrombotic disease admission to a tertiary hospital in an Australian setting. METHODS: Using data linkage we analysed two years of hospitalisation data and death records of all men and women aged 35-84 years with an admission to a Western Australian tertiary hospital for atherothrombotic

The cost of dengue hemorrhagic fever in Thailand.

The economic burden of DHF patients and of the Thai government in providing treatment and prevention and control of dengue hemorrhagic fever were assessed. Patient burden was reported by caretakers who stayed with the patients when they were admitted to three hospitals: Children's Hospital in Bangkok; Suphan Buri Provincial Hospital and Don Chedi Community Hospital, Don Chedi District in Suphan Buri Province. The hospital costs--medicine and laboratory costs--were collected from the treatment forms and the routine service cost was estimated by the staff of the hospitals. Cost of prevention and

Association between catastrophic health expenditure and mental health among elderly in China: the potential role of income and social activity.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the association between catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) and mental health in elderly population and its potential moderators. This study examined the relationship between CHE and depressive symptoms in Chinese older persons and its difference between groups of different income level and social activity engagement. METHODS: We employed data from the 4 waves (2011, 2013, 2015, and 2018, N = 15,406) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A linear mixed model was used to examine the association between depressive symptoms and CHE, a

IUPHAR review: From foe to friend: Repurposing glucagon to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes.

The epidemics of metabolic disease, in the form of obesity and type 2 diabetes, are a growing public health concern. However, incretin-based therapeutics have transformed our ability to address these diseases. While this current generation of incretin analogues show weight regain upon cessation of treatment, the amount of which can depend on the treatment and patient, iterative advancements may improve weight loss durability in the long term. In this review, we discuss the development of glucagon like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonists and GLP-1R/ glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide

Butein derivatives prevent obesity and improve insulin resistance through the induction of energy expenditure in high-fat diet-fed obese mice.

Obesity is a global public health problem and is related with fatal diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Medical and lifestyle-related strategies to combat obesity have their limitations. White adipose tissue (WAT) browning is a promising strategy for increasing energy expenditure in individuals with obesity. Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) drives WAT browning. We previously screened natural products that enable induction of Ucp1 and demonstrated that these natural products induced WAT browning and increased energy expenditure in mice with diet-induced obesity. In thi

Out-of-Pocket Expenditures for Imaging Examinations: Perspectives From National Patient Surveys Over Two Decades.

PURPOSE: Using national surveys, we longitudinally studied imaging costs-and specifically those paid out-of-pocket (OOP) by patients-over two decades. METHODS: Using 2000 to 2019 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data, we identified all imaging-focused encounters (mammography, radiography, ultrasonography, and CT and MR [surveyed together in Medical Expenditure Panel Survey]) and calculated mean overall and OOP encounter costs. Effects of sociodemographic, personal, and clinical factors were measured using logistic regression and generalized linear modeling. RESULTS: We identified 102,717 pat

Effect of Acute Cold Exposure on Energy Metabolism and Activity of Brown Adipose Tissue in Humans: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: The benefit of cold exposure for humans against obesity has brought the energy metabolism and activity of brown adipose tissue (BAT) induced by cold into focus. But the results are inconsistent. This review is aimed to systematically explore the effect of cold exposure on the activity of BAT and energy metabolism in humans. Methods: We searched relevant papers that were published from 1990 to 2021 and were cited in PubMed Central, Web of science, Embase and Cochrane Library databases to conduct this systematic review and meta-analysis. Energy metabolism, BAT volume, BAT activity an

Cost-benefit analysis of Chlamydia trachomatis screening in pregnant women in a high burden setting in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States (U.S.) [1] and remains a major public health problem. We determined the cost- benefit of screening all pregnant women aged 15-24 for Chlamydia trachomatis infection compared with no screening. METHODS: We developed a decision analysis model to estimate costs and health-related effects of screening pregnant women for C. trachomatis in a high burden setting (Brooklyn, NY). Outcome data was from literature for pregnant women in the 2015 US population. A virtual cohort of 6,444

Potential public sector cost-savings from over-the-counter access to oral contraceptives.

OBJECTIVE: This study estimates how making oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) available without a prescription may affect contraceptive use, unintended pregnancies and associated contraceptive and pregnancy costs among low-income women. STUDY DESIGN: Based on published figures, we estimate two scenarios [low over-the-counter (OTC) use and high OTC use] of the proportion of low-income women likely to switch to an OTC pill and predict adoption of OCPs according to the out-of-pocket costs per pill pack. We then estimate cost-savings of each scenario by comparing the total public sector cost of prov

Economic burden and economic impact of oral diseases in India: a protocol for a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Oral diseases are a major contributor to global disability but remain largely neglected in health policy, especially in low- and middle-income countries. India carries a disproportionately high burden of dental caries and periodontal disease, with limited access to oral healthcare and high reliance on out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE). Despite this, there is a lack of synthesised economic evidence specific to India, which limits informed policymaking and resource allocation. This systematic review aims to assess the economic burden and financial impact of oral diseases in India-at

Selection of sustainable municipal water reuse applications by multi-stakeholders using game theory.

Globally the trend of water reuse has been increasing. The public perception and government regulations are supportive for reclaimed water use in Canada. Reclaimed water can be used in variety of applications that may have different performance in economic, environmental and social dimensions for various stakeholders, indicating decision on water reuse selection is complex. This research proposes a multi-criteria multi-decision-makers framework combining multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) and game theory for a selection of a sustainable water reuse application. The proposed framework is ap

How Corruption Influences Population Health.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points This study examines the link between corruption and mortality. We find that corruption is associated with higher mortality, particularly in low-income countries. It is also linked to lower government revenue and distorted government expenditure patterns, which may contribute to resource misallocation and constraints in health financing. Our findings contribute to the literature on upstream determinants of health by highlighting the relevance of institutional and political economy factors for population health. The Sustainable Development Goals on combating corruption

Incremental cost of premature birth - a public health care payer perspective from Hungary.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth remains a significant burden to families, health systems and societies. The aim was to quantify the incremental prematurity-related public health expenditure in Hungary and to estimate the potential impact of a decrease in the prevalence of prematurity on the public payer's spending. METHODS: Over a 6-year time horizon, public financing data of inpatient, outpatient and pharmaceutical care for children born at ≥ 25 weeks of gestation in 2009/2010 were retrieved from the Hungarian National Health Insurance Fund database. In descriptive analysis, the public payer's spe
