Community health assessments (CHAs) are a foundational component of public health planning and accreditation, yet youth are often underrepresented in these processes, particularly in rural communities. Excluding youth perspectives limits opportunities to understand community assets and needs that directly shape young people's health and well-being. This article describes a low-cost, practice-based visioning session tool developed by a local health department to engage rural youth in the CHA process as part of routine public health practice. The visioning session tool uses creative expression t…

BACKGROUND: Media reporting on illicit issues has been frequently criticised for being sensationalised, biased and narrow. Yet, there have been few broad and systematic analyses of the nature of reporting. Using a large sample and methods commonly adopted in media communications analysis this paper sought to identify the dominant media portrayals used to denote illicit drugs in Australian newspapers and to compare and contrast portrayals across drug types.
METHODS: A retrospective content analysis of Australian print media was carried out over the period 2003-2008 from a sample comprised of 1

The participants in this debate agreed that: 1) target-based advocacy is required for ensuring countries' engagement and political commitments toward reducing child malnutrition, and the tools used for monitoring progress should be accurate and pose no risk of harmful consequences; and 2) physical growth is not the only dimension of nutritional status to be monitored in clinical and public health practice; anthropometry is thus only one of the diagnostic indicators of nutritional status. Key disagreements included methodological approaches for developing a single growth standard to evaluate nu…

Contemporary public health challenges, including non-communicable diseases, persistent inequalities, misinformation, and complex organisational systems, are fundamentally shaped by behavioural, social, and psychological processes. Although this is increasingly recognised, psychological science remains unevenly integrated into public health and is often confined to individual-level interventions rather than embedded in system design, governance, and policy. A more fundamental shift is required. Psychology should be understood not as an adjunct to public health but as one of its foundational dis

The need to engage the public in Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) control activities has become imperative in the context of morbidity reduction through preventive chemotherapy and community participation. Therefore, a survey was conducted among the general public to assess their knowledge and awareness of NTDs control activities in Nigeria. A simple questionnaire was administered to the general public attending a job fair in Abuja, Nigeria. Of the 461 respondents, a significant proportion 337 (73.1%) have heard of NTD before, but only 291 (63.1%) have good knowledge about NTDs. However, amo

Getting organs for transplantation depends on people's decision; thus, public opinion is essential to finding a solution to this problem. Efforts to improve organ shortage focus on: 1) Living, unrelated donation, 2) increasing marginal donors and 3) proposing economic support for donors. Paradoxically, no initiative has been suggested to modify public opinion towards cadaver donors. Several reasons explain the resistance to donating cadaver organs: Lack of awareness, religious uncertainties, distrust of medicine, hostility to new ideas, and misinformation. Education should be used to reshape p

This paper explores the urgent need for an inclusive model of leadership in public health, particularly in the context of accelerating social and political change. Drawing on lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic and other recent public health crises, the paper argues that traditional top-down leadership structures-often disconnected from the communities most impacted-are insufficient for responding to modern challenges. Instead, public health systems must invest in cultivating leaders who are embedded in, trusted by, and responsive to diverse populations. Citing workforce declines, public mistru

Growing evidence shows that unequal distribution of wealth and power across race, class, and gender produces the differences in living conditions that are "upstream" drivers of health inequalities. Health educators and other public health professionals, however, still develop interventions that focus mainly on "downstream" behavioral risks. Three factors explain the difficulty in translating this knowledge into practice. First, in their allegiance to the status quo, powerful elites often resist upstream policies and programs that redistribute wealth and power. Second, public health practice is…

Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) is a common cause of community-acquired pneumonia in children in China, and it is often prevalent in the autumn and winter seasons. In the autumn and winter of 2023, a large-scale epidemic outbreak of MP pneumonia occurred nationwide in the pediatric population, which brought harm to child health, caused a heavy disease burden, imposed a challenge to the pediatric medical service system, and aroused great attention from medical administration and public health fields. The widespread prevalence of macrolide-resistant MP (MRMP) in China has become a prominent problem i

BACKGROUND: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential to lowering the global burden of non-communicable diseases. Living a healthy lifestyle reduces the likelihood of developing a severe illness or passing away too soon. Public officials frequently lead unhealthy lifestyles because they are time-pressed and face many challenges that could negatively impact their health. However, there is limited evidence on the level of healthy lifestyle practice and factors associated with unhealthy lifestyle practice among public servants.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess healthy lifestyle practice

Response to public health emergencies requires continued adaptation and innovation. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is the country's public health institute with the mandate to protect the health of Nigerians. Achieving such mandate in resource-limited settings with divergent demographic characteristics of the citizens, necessitates the readiness to learn from experience and to develop policies and activities in line with lessons learnt and best practices. This practice paper describes the initiatives of the NCDC towards adapting its public health response activities by establish

Agent-based modeling is a computational approach in which agents with a specified set of characteristics interact with each other and with their environment according to predefined rules. We review key areas in public health where agent-based modeling has been adopted, including both communicable and noncommunicable disease, health behaviors, and social epidemiology. We also describe the main strengths and limitations of this approach for questions with public health relevance. Finally, we describe both methodologic and substantive future directions that we believe will enhance the value of ag

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a broad-based study that initially investigated a possible gap in global inputs into the fight against HIV/AIDS and TB co-infection, and outputs in terms of results achieved. It is proposed that such a gap may be hypothesized to be due, at least in part, to inappropriate management regimes within the global health governance structure. The research does not simply question the effectiveness of the management of programs and projects, but rather the inappropriateness resulting from the lack of addressing cross-cultural issues.

This article explores the use of family history of disease as a public health tool for risk stratification and improved disease prevention by drawing from previous research on women at moderate risk of developing breast cancer because of a positive family history. About one quarter to one third of women do not appear to be aware of the added risk a family history of breast cancer poses, and many women with a family history overestimate their risk. It is unclear whether risk perceptions are causally related to breast cancer screening in women with a family history. Exaggerated risk perceptions
