This study compared the effectiveness of chilled and room temperature green cabbage leaves in reducing the discomfort of breast engorgement in postpartum mothers. Twenty-eight lactating women with breast engorgement used chilled cabbage leaves on one breast and room-temperature cabbage leaves on the other for a two-hour period. Pre-treatment pain levels were compared with post-treatment levels for both conditions. Gallbladder perforation is an infrequent but potentially fatal disease. It is extremely rare during pregnancy. We report two cases of gallbladder rupture in the immediate postpartum period and review the literature. The first patient was a 28-year-old polysubstance abuser who presented at 29 weeks' gestation with generalized abdominal pain and ascites. Over a 48-hour period, her abdominal pain increased, and preterm labor and delivery occurred. She had an exploratory laparotomy the day after delivery for persistent abdominal pain and ascites, and a ruptured, gangrenous gallbladder was found. T

Puerperae with acute and chronic pyelonephritis complicated by gestosis often develop postpartum inflammatory complications in the presence of marked deficiency of T lymphocytes and phagocytic function. Clinical criteria are suggested to single out risk groups. Prophylactic injections of leukinferon (alpha-interferon) and other immune response first phase cytokines in complex with metabolic agents help almost normalize the immunologic parameters in the majority of puerperae within 3-6 days and reduce threefold the incidence of early and late postpartum inflammatory complications.

During a 5-year period, 13 cases of HELLP syndrome were seen in hypertensive patients in the Obstetrics Department, Santa Maria Hospital, Lisbon. In 7 cases the syndrome occurred antepartum and in 6 during early early puerperium; gestational age and clinical features were very different from case to case. Four cases of eclampsia and 2 cases of acute renal failure occurred in 5 patients; there were 2 intrauterine deaths. Maternal mortality was nil. Postpartum thyroiditis is a benign, often self-limited cause of thyroid dysfunction. This report describes the first case of papillary carcinoma arising in a woman with postpartum thyroid disease. Both clinicians and pathologists must keep a high index of suspicion in postpartum patients with persistent thyroid abnormalities, even when a previous biopsy may have disclosed benign disease.

Colposcopic examination was done in 189 successive parturients within 6-48 h of delivery for evidence of type, site, and extent of cervical trauma and its relation to various obstetric factors. A rare case of coronary artery dissection was observed in a 33-year-old woman on the fourth postpartum day. The ischemic syndrome was followed by aneurysmal dilatation of the left ventricle and progressive heart failure that necessitated cardiac transplantation. The patient is alive and well 3 years after the transplantation.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be helpful in the assessment of eclampsia and preeclampsia with central nervous system symptomatology such as cortical blindness. We describe a rare case of complete binocular blindness postpartum with no other neurologic deficits, in which MRI abnormalities were undetected on computed tomography. The better soft-tissue discrimination of MRI may visualize important but subtle lesions which ultimately may help to explain the underlying pathophysiologic mechanism in such cases.

The authors followed a population of 204 primiparous women in order to be able to tackle the causes of those frequent sexual problems that occur after delivery. Hypothyroidism was discovered in the postpartum period. The disorder resolved spontaneously. Tests for antimicrosomial antibodies were strongly positive.
