Magnetic interactions in phenyl-bridged nitroxide diradicals: conformational effects by multireference and broken symmetry DFT approaches.

In the present paper we report the key results of a comprehensive computational study aimed at investigating the dependence of the singlet-triplet energy gap in phenyl-bridged bis-nitroxide diradicals, on the basis set and on soft structural parameters like torsion and pyramidalization. We have compared the BS-DFT technique with the post-Hartree-Fock DDCI2 multireference approach. With this latter method we have also studied the different role that sigma and pi core and virtual orbitals have in the resulting singlet-triplet energy gap.The results obtained represent one step forward in the defi

Revisiting the laser dye Styryl-13 as a reference near-infrared fluorophore: implications for the photoluminescence quantum yields of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes.

The near-infrared (NIR) polymethine dye Styryl-13 emitting at approximately 925 nm has recently been suggested as a reference fluorophore for determining the quantum yield (QY) of the NIR photoluminescence of dispersed single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Ju et al. reported the QY for SWNTs to be as high as 20% on the basis of 11% QY for Styryl-13 in methanol (Science 2009, 323, 1319). We directly compared the fluorescence of Styryl-13 and Styryl-20 (emitting at approximately 945 nm) with that of the standard fluorophore Rhodamine 6G using a spectrometer with a broad visible-NIR detection r

DFT conformation and energies of amylose fragments at atomic resolution. Part 2: 'Band-flip' and 'kink' forms of alpha-maltotetraose.

In Part 2 of this series of DFT optimization studies of alpha-maltotetraose, we present results at the B3LYP/6-311++G** level of theory for conformations denoted 'band-flips' and 'kinks'. Recent experimental X-ray studies have found examples of amylose fragments with conformations distorted from the usual syn forms, and it was of interest to examine these novel structural motifs by the same high-level DFT methods used in Part 1. As in Part 1, we have examined numerous hydroxymethyl rotamers (gg, gt, and tg) at different locations in the residue sequence, and include the two hydroxyl rotamers,

Reactions of the hydroperoxide anion with dimethyl methylphosphonate in an ion trap mass spectrometer: evidence for a gas phase alpha-effect.

The gas phase degradation reactions of the chemical warfare agent (CWA) simulant, dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), with the hydroperoxide anion (HOO(-)) were investigated using a modified quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer. The HOO(-) anion reacts readily with neutral DMMP forming two significant product ions at m/z 109 and m/z 123. The major reaction pathways correspond to (i) the nucleophilic substitution at carbon to form [CH(3)P(O)(OCH(3))O](-) (m/z 109) in a highly exothermic process and (ii) exothermic proton transfer. The branching ratios of the two reaction pathways, 89% and 11% r

Theoretical study of the experimental coordination behavior of N-(2-aminophenyl)-D-glycero-D-gulo-heptonamide to Hg(II) ion.

The reactivity of N-(2-aminophenyl)-d-glycero-d-gulo-heptonamide (adgha), with the group 12 cations, Zn(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II), was studied in DMSO-d(6) solution. The studied system showed a selective coordination to Hg(II), and the products formed were characterized by (1)H and (13)C NMR in DMSO-d(6) solution and fast atom bombardment (FAB(+)) mass spectra. The expected coordination compounds, [Hg(adgha)](NO(3))(2) and [Hg(adgha)(2)](NO(3))(2), were observed as unstable intermediates that decompose to bis-[2-(d-glycero-d-gulo-hexahydroxyhexyl)-benzimidazole-κN]mercury(II) dinitrate, [Hg(ghbz

Quantum calculation of highly excited vibrational energy levels of CS2(X) on a new empirical potential energy surface and semiclassical analysis of 1:2 Fermi resonance.

We report a refined potential energy function for the ground electronic state of CS2 based on a least-squares fitting to several low-lying experimental vibrational frequencies. Energy levels up to 20,000 cm(-1) have been obtained on this empirical potential using the Lanczos algorithm and potential optimized discrete variable representation. Among them, 329 levels below 10,000 cm(-1) are assigned with approximate normal mode quantum numbers (n1, n(0)2, n3), based on expectation values of one-dimensional (1D) reference Hamiltonians. An effective Hamiltonian is extracted from these assigned leve

Quantum chemical study of relative reactivities of a series of amines and nitriles: relevance to prebiotic chemistry.

Using the Iterative Extended Hucken Theory (IEHT) calculations of the elctron distribution and orbital energies of a series of thirteen amines, nitriles and amino-nitriles relevant to prebiotic and cosmo-chemistry have been carried out. Ground state properties such as the energy and nature of the highest occupied (HOMO) and lowest empty (LEMO) molecular orbitals, net atomic charges and number of non-bonding electrons have been identified as criteria for correlating the relative nucleophilicity of amine and nitrile nitrogens and the electrophilicity of nitrile and other unsaturated carbon atoms

Theoretical Investigation on the Mechanism of Alzheimer's Disease Detection through Firefly Bioluminescence.

Development of precise, non-invasive, and dynamic methods for detecting amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregates is of vital importance for the early diagnosis and therapeutic evaluation of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recently, the Akalumine (AkaL)-based firefly bioluminescent probe has emerged as a promising tool for deep-tissue Aβ imaging. However, despite the successful experimental application of this probe, an understanding that links its microscopic mechanisms to the observed bioluminescence (BL) intensity, kinetics, and imaging performance is still lacking. In this work, a multiscale theoretical investi

A personal perspective of the present status and future challenges facing thermal reaction rate theory.

Reaction rate theory has been at the center of physical chemistry for well over one hundred years. The evolution of the theory is not only of historical interest. Reliable and accurate computation of reaction rates remains a challenge to this very day, especially in view of the development of quantum chemistry methods, which predict the relevant force fields. It is still not possible to compute the numerically exact rate on the fly when the system has more than at most a few dozen anharmonic degrees of freedom, so one must consider various approximate methods, not only from the practical point

Crafting moiré superlattices in twisted complex oxide-transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures.

Moiré superlattices, arising from overlaying atomic layers with slight mismatch or rotation, have transformed the study of emergent electronic and quantum phenomena beyond those of the constituent materials. Expanding this paradigm, here we demonstrate moiré superlattice formation at the interface between strongly correlated oxides and two-dimensional layered materials. The integration of complex oxides, a classic family of strongly correlated electron systems with transition metal dichalcogenides, enables the realization of an emerging class of moiré-engineered heterostructures that may poten

Universal classical and quantum fluctuations in the large deviations of current of noisy quantum systems: Quantum symmetric simple exclusion and inclusion processes.

We study the fluctuation statistics of integrated currents in noisy quantum diffusive systems, focusing on the quantum symmetric simple exclusion and inclusion processes (QSSEPs and QSSIPs). These one-dimensional fermionic (QSSEP) and bosonic (QSSIP) models feature stochastic nearest-neighbor hopping driven by Brownian noise, together with boundary injection and removal processes. They provide solvable microscopic settings in which quantum coherence coexists with diffusion. Upon noise averaging, their dynamics reduce to those of the classical SSEP and SSIP. We show that the cumulant-generating

Phase Transitions and Remnants of Fractionalization at Finite Temperature in the Triangular Lattice Quantum Loop Model.

The quantum loop and dimer models are archetypal correlated systems with local constraints. With natural foundations in statistical mechanics, they are of direct relevance to various important physical concepts and systems, such as topological order, lattice gauge theories, geometric frustrations, or more recently Rydberg array quantum simulators. However, how the thermal fluctuations interact with constraints has not been explored in the important class of nonbipartite geometries. Here we study, via unbiased quantum Monte Carlo simulations and field theoretical analysis, the finite-temperatur

Carborane-Decorated Siloles with Highly Efficient Solid-State Emissions - What Drives the Photophysical Properties?

New hybrids were synthesised by linking carboranes and siloles, both of which are known as aggregation-induced emission active units. Although most of the newly synthesised systems do not display notable quantum yield either in solution or in the aggregated state, they emit strongly in the solid-state, and a quantum yield of up to 100 % can be achieved. The tailorable quantum yield can be attributed to the packing of the molecules in the crystal lattice ruled by the carborane and phenyl moieties according to the SC-XRD data. Our experimental results, complemented by density functional theory c

Tetraphenylethylene-thiazole derivatives: a combined experimental and DFT study for the rational design of novel materials.

A series of six novel tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based derivatives with an NH1,3-thiazole linker and donor or acceptor substituents were synthesized and comprehensively investigated to elucidate structure-photophysical property relationships in solution and in the solid state. All compounds exhibited good thermal stability (5% weight loss above 211 °C) and irreversible oxidation processes, with frontier molecular orbitals predominantly localized on the TPENH1,3-thiazole fragment. Steady-state absorption and emission spectroscopy studies in five solvents with different polarity and at low temper

Unmasking quantum effects in the surface thermodynamics of fluid nanodrops.

The focus of our study is an in-depth investigation of the quantum effects associated with the surface tension and other thermodynamic properties of nanoscopic liquid drops. The behavior of drops of quantum Lennard-Jones fluids is investigated with path-integral Monte Carlo simulations, and the test-area method is used to determine the surface tension of the spherical vapor-liquid interface. As the thermal de Broglie wavelength, λB, becomes more significant, the average density of the liquid drop decreases, with the drop becoming mechanically unstable at large wavelengths. As a consequence, th

Semidefinite programming for quantum channel learning.

The problem of reconstructing a quantum channel from a sample of classical data is considered. When the total fidelity can be represented as a ratio of two quadratic forms (e.g., in the case of mapping a mixed state to a pure state, projective operators, unitary learning, and others), semidefinite programming (sdp) can be applied to solve the fidelity optimization problem with respect to the Choi matrix. A remarkable feature of sdp is that the optimization is convex, which allows the problem to be efficiently solved by a variety of numerical algorithms. We have tested several commercially avai

Aubry-André localization transition for an active undulator.

The transport of deformable self-propelling objects like bacteria, worms, snakes, and robots through heterogeneous environments is poorly understood. Here we use experiment, simulation, and theory to study a snake-like robot as it undulates without sensory feedback through a linear array of boulder-like hemispherical obstacles. The profile of the boulder landscape approximates a one-dimensional potential for quantum waves introduced by Aubry and André (AA), who found that wave function localization occurs when this potential is sufficiently aperiodic. This behavior is related to the phenomenon
